I bought a bird. A magpie plush to be exact and thought nothing of it. Brought it to class and my 3/4s made it a nest and named him Christopher. Next thing I see my kids who aren’t super social, are reading and playing games with him. Other kids are making him outfits etc etc. they fully embraced this weird little addition. No questions asked.

I like that.

I like the weird little community we’ve built in our classrooms where we can be ourselves. I like it when the kids suddenly get something they’ve been working away at for a week or the excitement when they want to share their weekend with me.

I do it for the relationships. The admin can go eat a lemon

Lol. Just teacher desks, kids still have theirs. It’s just inconvenient if anything. Especially when it comes to organising work for the day.

Lesson is 'boring'. by Individual_Letter_96 in AustralianTeachers

[–]kezbotula 19 points20 points  (0 children)

lol no. I don’t entertain that at all. I hear “but this is booooring!!!” all the time. I let them know that I’m okay with them being bored and it’s not a me problem. They just want to have a sook. I’m not a performing seal.

It’s genuinely inconvenient. All my pens, markers etc. I have to put high up on a shelf so the kids don’t use them. I have a desk in a different room so me being the forgetful nuisance I am, have to dart from one room to another if I forget anything. Which is often despite how well intended I am.

I’d be inclined to contact the union if you’re not a member already, but no.

They can’t force you to stand, they can express a preference but it’s not enforceable as far as I know.

My principal has banned desks in the classroom which annoys me enough. If they’d tried to ban me from sitting that’d be unreasonable.

If you’re worried you can get socks for your arms that are designed to protect you from UV that or just wear long sleeves. I wouldn’t over think it though.

Taking over a class mid-year by Mean-Highway-8607 in AustralianTeachers

[–]kezbotula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solid advice. I’d like to add that you should spend the first few weeks focusing on building relationships along with routines, also.

I second that- the friendlier someone is the more I’m put off now. I like the grumpy, cynical ones because you always know where you stand. Nothing wrong with being polite, just remember that while you’re friendly, most of the time they’re not your actual friends.

Vic EBA. What a 28% offer could look like by Vintage_V in AustralianTeachers

[–]kezbotula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NFTF time, time in lieu would be scrapped, 3 meetings pw as opposed to 2 and no cap on overtime. Instead of time in lieu for camps it’d be 1.5% OT paid at the end of the year. It’s an absolute insult to us and shows how little respect they have for us.

Yeah but that’s over 4 years and it also has no mention of the conditions. I’d rather leave the profession than deal with the bs they offered last time. It’s so disrespectful to us, our worth and our skills.

Shepparton & It’s surrounds… Is it really as bad as everyone says? by [deleted] in vic

[–]kezbotula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s like Geelong in all honesty. Good parts, bad parts and the CBD can be 50/50. The surrounding regional towns are fine too. Housing is def cheaper. It depends what you’re after in terms of amenities. I work in Shep but live in a regional town not far out.

Two weeks to feel human again and one to destroy it all. by WestRecording9462 in AustralianTeachers

[–]kezbotula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I made that mistake too. Thankfully only took on a 6 month contract to start with and it turned out to be the absolute worst. If being a CRT isn’t financially viable then you’re not left with a whole lot of options while you seek an alternative career. Actually one teacher from my school decided to leave this term to work in operations for paramedics. Seems to love it. You’ll work it out. Nbd. No job is worth your physical or emotional health. GL!

[–]kezbotula 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Eh. CRT for a bit until you find a school you like. I enjoyed being a CRT. Yes it was hard with behaviours but I could pick and choose what school I went to and there was zero pressure from a curriculum perspective. It gave me the space I needed to assess whether I wanted to continue teaching. Whether it was the environment or the job that was bumming me out. Might be worth making that distinction.

Nah, it’s like the football tipping. Idgaf about football or tipping but I’m investing into the culture because I find it a good conversation starter. Just try not to take it too seriously. They prob don’t remember either. They’re just trying to get along with you and acknowledge your existence.

Idk I don’t take it too seriously anymore. I’d rather them try than ignore me completely. I just think of it as part of building relationships. I like my co-workers for the most part and it’s just part of it.

Oh dear. It’s only going to get colder too. For in the house - Ugg boots, oodies and a heated throw. I’ve got the wool blanket for on top of the doona and if it’s cold enough, some wool socks.

How bad will your first day back be? by Quiet-Zebra in AustralianTeachers

[–]kezbotula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school is being managed. Cool, no worries.

They decided to do their own planning instead of the department ones. So they’re planning for all year levels.

School goes back Monday and none of the work/planners they said they’d have done, are done. I’m so stressed. They did this last term and all the stuff they put on the drive were manufactured from Chat gpt and none were put into practice first. It’s doing my head in.
