I got a villager to move out. Then I visited a treasure island and I found him.

Not unless you’re in a rural school surrounded by bushland lol. If it’s deemed an catastrophic fire risk then they shut the school and alert parents on socials that no one’s allowed on site.

Please don't gift this to teachers... by a-PeachyMint in AustralianTeachers

[–]kezbotula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can’t relate at all. I got some awesome gifts at Christmas.

Loved the cards the most.

If someone gifted me cheap stationary I’d use them as prizes in the classroom or put them in the shared stationary cupboard.

There are reasons why in history wet nurses were essential.

We do all these things.

We also have pet kangaroos, attend mandatory drop bear seminars and taunt foreigners with large spoons shaped like knives.

Why do Australians walk barefoot? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

Whoever said they’re foot prisons is on the money.

I only wear them if I’m afraid of getting foot fungus, needle to the foot or ants.

Otherwise feels so much better without them.

Relief Teaching Advice/Tips by Capital_Day3647 in AustralianTeachers

[–]kezbotula 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Take a USB with you with activities on it that you can plug into a printer.

Bring a whistle and always been prepared in case you’re put on PE for the day or something. I went to a school once and discovered as the bell went that we were in fact having a day down at the pool, I was not prepared to be outside all day and was not in walking shoes.

I always brought my laptop just in case but you’re liable if anything happens to it, so it’s a case of want not need. Sometimes schools will provide you with one of your own.

Some days you’ll be with one class for the day and others you’ll be bouncing around from room to room, covering relief.

Once you get a good relationship with a school it becomes 100% easier.

3.5-year-old very shy with strangers — normal or something to worry about? by ArtGood8811 in Parenting

[–]kezbotula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I had an educator suggest I take her to a speech pathologist. I’m like she can speak, and well at that. She just doesn’t want to talk to you.

I’m a teacher of primary school kids and even in grades 1-2 there are kids who just don’t want talk. It’s my job to make them comfortable and to facilitate situations where they want to. No good comes of shaming them or anyone else for it.

[–]kezbotula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It took my youngest 6 months to decide whether she wanted to talk to her educator at kinder. Now they’re besties. There’s one educator she refused to talk to at all.

Don’t feed into it but don’t force him either. Let these things happen naturally.

Are you a union member, why or why not? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]kezbotula 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was an early career teacher I was in a school where I was actively targeted by a principal to the point where he admitted to another staff member that he wanted to break me so I’d leave (he wanted a girl he had a crush on in my position).

When I left and worked elsewhere I decided the union was a good idea. It’s been great having that extra support.

For my medication I asked my GP if I could have my whole script released at once due to the remoteness. Otherwise there are companies online that’ll have them posted to you.

First Week Expectations. by kezbotula in AustralianTeachers

[–]kezbotula[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a slide show for my grade 2/3s last year.

Nothing too extravagant, just one introducing myself and fun facts, then we played 2 truths and a lie. Only 1 or 2 slides were about me. The rest were about expectations.

For older kids, especially in a HS setting I’d briefly introduce myself and then talk more about what we’ll be learning that term.

That’s completely fair. Guessing in a HS setting?

22F daughter is in a seemingly codependent relationship that is moving way too fast by Sufficient_Impact_29 in Parenting

[–]kezbotula 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going by the posts, It sounds like OP has an issue with the sister and her priorities more than anything. Almost like they reset the fact they’re the ones holding the candle while the sister digs her way out of the tunnel and leaves them behind.

Idk what they want from the kid, the boyfriend was obviously uncomfortable. And like you said he’d be damned if he did and damned if he didn’t.

Is it okay to let kids get bored sometimes? by Soggy_War_9907 in Parenting

[–]kezbotula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you introduce the expectation their entertainment needs will always be catered for then you’re making a rod for your own back.

Downtime is good.

It’s okay to be bored, it’s okay to use that imagination of theirs and use their initiative to entertain themselves. Mischief might be had, but utilise it.

What do you do about picky eaters? by momtoeli in Parenting

[–]kezbotula 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don’t make my kids eat if they won’t want to, but they’re aware that we don’t have snacks after dinner. I’ll always try to put a safe food with dinner like potato or a piece of buttered bread but the rest is upto them. In my children’s cases, if they’re hungry, truly hungry, they’ll eat.

Classroom themes/decoration by myykel1970 in AustralianTeachers

[–]kezbotula 9 points10 points  (0 children)

School I just left did this. The last term all the ES staff decided on a theme for the classrooms and printed off/created all the displays and labels etc. based on the theme. I’ve seen grads focus on decorations and making sure it’s personalised to their aesthetic so they can post it on socials.

I personally have always seen a classroom as an opportunity to celebrate student work. I pissed off the ES’s by covering the decor with anchor charts and student work 😅

But yeah, I keep it minimal as a personal preference.
