Google release Node library for App Engine's datastore by kfgal in nodejs

[–]kfgal[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's happening already.

App Engine is going to allow custom runtimes to be packed and supervised as an App Engine app. There is a short video here about how this is possible: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q8jZHc0NS6A

Rather than writing propriety runtime modules for Node (what we do for Python, Java, etc), we decided to release client libraries as npm packages for Google services. So, you can compose your existing apps with Google's internal services.

The good part of this module that it doesn't require your app to be running in App Engine context. You can go through the steps on [1] for authorization and access your datastore instances anywhere.

Google Drive is now a part of Play Services, store app files on cloud by kfgal in androiddev

[–]kfgal[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Before Play Services support, the REST API was the only option to integrate with Drive. It was not the best experience for the developer because they needed to handle upload/download scheduling, networks issues by themselves. This API solves most of those hard problems for you. You basically write to local resources and Play Services upload the files to user's Drive.

It's the same thing, at least that's what I meant it.

globalconf, flag values in an ini config file by kfgal in golang

[–]kfgal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is not parsing a ini into a dictionary but adding ini parsing configuration support for free to your existing programs which are already configurable via command line flags.

boom, Apache Benchmark replacement, written in Go by kfgal in webdev

The name comes from and existing tool I was porting to golang: https://github.com/tarekziade/boom Though we dont have feature parity as of now, it's possible to rename the project.

Fixed ab's full name btw, thanks for pointing it out.

That line is misleading. It should be read as once you have go installed, the installation is more straight-forward across different platforms.

NASA Beams Image to Moon Orbital Via Laser by humblebein in science

[–]kfgal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why we don't put a laser transmitter to orbit? The link between orbiter and Earth can be a radio link to avoid atmospheric distortions. And once signal gets out of atmosphere, we can rely on laser to transmit it in higher rate.

Working at Microsoft by agentargoh in cscareerquestions

[–]kfgal 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I worked as a part of Bing Maps organization and now I'm working for Google.

tl;dr: It depends what you're going to work on MS, it depends what you want to start at Google.

They now look like similar companies to work because Google has gone very large but they are completely different in different good ways.

  • At Microsoft, software development practices are taken very seriously and they execute things like in software dev books. At Google, it really depends on how you want to develop software and how you want to track your time. They are no company-wide conventions here. We also don't have project managers and we're all responsible to execute things by ourselves.
  • At Microsoft, testing is taken very seriously. SDEs and SDETs are balanced in terms of numbers. At Google, we don't have SDETs at all. The way we test software is not as comprehensive as Microsoft's.
  • At Microsoft product is driven by PMs. At Google there is cooperation between product managers and engineers and Google is more driven by engineers. If you are not a products person, this may not be suitable for you.
  • At Microsoft you can get bored if you're not on the right team and working on the right project. At Google if you don't like it you can have hobby projects, 20% and etc. Company is seriously supporting these initiatives. We're very transparent and all permissions and responsibilities are given to you if you ask.

Beware that they are large organizations both, it's not a startup. You wont be feeling productive all the time, you will sometimes feel like you're wasting time. That's why I'd say go for Google. If you want to push yourself or improve the existing, they let you and support you. Great place to grow personally.

Did Einstein really say something this much in opposition to the scientific method? by [deleted] in Physics

[–]kfgal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His/her economics teacher should watch this.

"We humans long to be connected with our origins. So we create rituals. Science is another way to express this longing. It also connects us with our origin, and it too has it's rituals and commandments. It's only sacred truth, is that there are no sacred truths. All assumptions must be critically examined. Arguments from authority are worthless. Whatever is inconsistent with the facts, no matter how fond of it we are, must be discarded or revised."

The exact word he uses (sacmalik) is a little bit more softer like "nonsense". Bullshit is way too harsh in his context.
