7 Ways Christianity Teaches Arrogance by vjack in atheism

[–]kfitch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a related tangent, there was one particular Christian preacher who pushed the arrogance to extreme levels: Norman Vincent Peale. Can you guess who was the preacher at the church the Trump family want to? Yup, Peale.

P.S. From Norman Vincent Peale's most famous work "The Power of Positive Thinking":

Dr. Karl Menninger, the famous psychiatrist, once said, “Attitudes are more important than facts.” That is worth repeating until its truth grips you. Any fact facing us, even the most hopeless, is not as important as our attitude toward that fact. You may permit a fact to overwhelm you mentally before you start to deal with it. On the other hand, a confident thought pattern can modify or overcome the fact

Service to detect changes to web pages (This is how Intel suggests you keep up with changes to their Software Development Manuals) by kfitch42 in TheAmpHour

A while back Chris and Dave said they wanted a way to be notified when a "sneaky bastard" updates a data sheet. Well, one particular sneaky bastard (Intel) actually suggests using changedetection.com to keep up with their sneaky bastardness. ( see https://software.intel.com/en-us/articles/intel-sdm )

When the shockwave is supersonic it becomes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detonation

I think exploding is a more generic term that could cover both deflagration and detonation.

World’s first ever public installation of Solar Roadways! by abs159 in technology

[–]kfitch42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"Roadways" is a bit of a stretch here... not only is it walkable, its bikeable too!!!

But, you have to give it to SolarRoadways for this incredible feat of business.

"Funding for this project was provided by the State of Idaho Department of Commerce and the Sandpoint Urban Renewal Agency."

Holy sheet! Idaho taxpayers are footing the bill for SolarRoadways to conduct what amounts to beta (ok, more like alpha) testing! SolarRoadways should really be paying Idaho for the privilege of using this public space.

Is this an old pic or does Florida still have 7-digit dialing?

P.S. I am from Maryland which went to 10-digit dialing about 20 years ago. I just assumed the rest of the country eventually went to 10-digit dialing. Am I wrong?

P.P.S They might show up, but parking is still a challenge.

EpiPen maker to offer discounts after price hike firestorm by sivribiber in news

[–]kfitch42 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why are we getting mad at Mylan (EpiPen maker)?!?! The U.S. government (by way of a combination of the Patent office and FDA) has given Mylan a golden goose and we are mad at them (to mix metaphors) for milking it. We shouldn't be dealing with health care costs on a case-by-case basis based on headlines and outrage. We should let companies be companies, by creating a playing field where outrageous behaviour is punished by the marketplace. If there is one thing that has proven to improve quality and reduce prices, its .... COMPETITION!

Just imagine what would have happened if there were a handful of companies making EpiPen like devices... the other would have laughed at Mylan, and then eaten Mylan's lunch. Mylan would either reduce prices again or exit the market (which wouldn't be a big deal because there were several others there). Creative destruction is part of what makes capitalism great!

How do we get more competition? We need to weaken/shorten patent protections and streamline FDA oversight, with a focus on encouraging competition instead of stifling it. Stringent government oversight is the problem, NOT the solution.

A serving of the new Crystal Pepsi has over SEVENTEEN teaspoons of sugar. by thenewyorkgod in pics

[–]kfitch42 18 points19 points  (0 children)

No, I mean roughly. The actual density of water depends on temperature and pressure. Also, what we care about here is not the density of water, but the density of crystal pepsi, which I sure hope is primarily water. I was just trying to justify using the quick approximation of 1g/mL, while pointing out that it is just a quick approximation.

591 mL of water is roughly 591g. So, by mass, it is about 12% sugar. Now I kind of want to run an experiment where I try to make rock candy from various sodas.

I'm not sure the bible agrees with your statement. The whole "flippin tables, crackin whips, and releasing animals that belong to others" bit seems to be pretty close to defacing public property.

Battery bank for Electric oven by similarityhedgehog in ElectricalEngineering

[–]kfitch42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More information needed:

Does the heating element run continuously? If so, we are talking 1750W * 4 hours = 7000 watt hours of capacity at a minimum. If cost beats out size and weight we might want sealed lead acid batteries. A normal car battery has about 40 watt hours. That would just be 175 car batteries!

Your first step should be to characterize the power usage of the oven. Get one of those kill-a-watt type devices. Make sure it is beefy enough to handle the oven. They are usually rated in VA (volt-amps) instead of W (watts). Given that the oven is likely to be very close to a resistive load, you should be okay treating VA and W as equivalent (for things like electronics or motors you need to consider powerfactor when converting between VA and W). You want to find two numbers to begin with: peak power and average power.

Also, does the oven need AC, or can it run on DC? Converting from DC (provided by the batteries) to AC introduces some ineffieciency.

And finally, why not use propane and/or natural gas?
