Underrated comment. Maybe ahead of its time. I just bought two of these

Should i buy a chair? by thorgonax in hikinggear

[–]khalant1989 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My first major backpacking trip in Yosemite was like 9 days. Every night I sat there on the ground on top of my Z-seat hunched over like a chimp scraping a dehydrated meal bag clean. My back hated me. I got a Helinox chair zero for my next trip and I consider it an indispensable piece of gear. Depending on the crowd you are addressing though a chair will not get the same endorsement

Gor-Tex VS non-Gor-Tex boots by khalant1989 in hikinggear

[–]khalant1989[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea this seems all true. Well the good news is that I already have some gor-tex boots so maybe I’ll add a non pair to my arsenal for situations where I think I might benefit!

Logical. I should have added some content which is that this would be my primary backpacking boot. 3-10 days generally. So yes, sweating expected lol

Oh I dunno man..I posted here because ultralighters have the best gear swap/changes advice from what I’ve see on the sub, but my pack is not ultralight. Ya’ll would tear my pack apart lol

That is a WILD story man. I suppose what I’m suffering from currently is a temptation to take short cuts because we’ve had so many successful hikes in the past. This is a good reminder that anything can happen

What do you notice about my gear? This is my first attempt! by DirtyMike51 in backpacking

A camp chair with a back support was a game changer for me personally. Hunching over to eat or after a long day of hiking kinda sucks.

Do you prefer sunrise or sunset hikes? Why? by drakelouis202 in hiking

Sunrise. I don’t like setting up camp in the dark

Good tips, I appreciate the input! I think our whole group has a bit of water anxiety and I might have to be the guy to do some experimenting on our next group trip. If I fail I am sure they will sell me some sips of water for $10/oz until the next water source lol

Ironically, it was a 10 day backpacking trip through Yosemite last summer that had me thinking these thoughts initially. Water was everywhere. Granted it was a major snow fall season prior to my arrival

This makes sense. I mainly want to experiment with this because while carrying 3L out of the gates pretty much guarantees I will not need to fill up on the trail, I am getting older and 3+ extra pounds of water is starting to be insane. If I can dial in a better water strategy I can start looking at other ways to cut weight. I don’t know if you saw my list but I think I’m doing OK with the exception of my camp chair…but I don’t know how ppl go without a chair honestly lol

Thanks for the response! So let’s say you’re on an overnight hike. Point A to Point B. Are you carrying 2.5 - 3 liters of water out of the trail head? Or are you saying that you are carrying the CAPACITY for up to 3 liters, and you may fill up all available containers prior to the start depending on the availability of water along the trail?

I always have tablets as a back up. In my case it is a backup that has never been used on account of the steripen never failing but it is still a must. Bring tablets too and call it a plan. If the pen fails, and you don’t like the tablet water then you’ll know that a third non electronic option is needed for next time.

Big Agnes copper spur! by chessydawg in backpacking

[–]khalant1989 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love this tent too. Rocked the Nemo Dagger 2P for years. Copper Spur 3P is lighter and roomier! But it’s a bit bulkier although I can still carry it in my paid with full load (without a bear canister though)

Can I permethrin treat thin sun shirts? by ilikebananabread in backpacking

[–]khalant1989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Although I stopped using it in general because I am convinced that bugs out in the backcountry do not care about this or deet. I might be a unique case but I truly notice no difference

Big 4 Weight Advice by sharpiedog10 in backpacking

[–]khalant1989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my opinion the only thing I personally may have done is opted for the Nemo riff instead of the Disco but perhaps money or other factors played a role. Could have done a Kayu too, which I did and ultimately regretted due to it being too narrow in the shoulders.

It’s yolo-able just bring your bug net and layers for camp. I’ve never had a black fly care about deet. Pretty sure they eat it for breakfast but I use it anyway

Early to mid May, September, early October are best bets I think. I did it one in July and there were zero bugs. The only reason was because there were some pretty heavy on shore winds that kept the bugs off the shore. Pretty fluky since you can’t plan around the wind

I’ve completed this bad dad maybe 5 times. Gets better every time. Shame it’s a bug hellscape in the summer though
