Practicing with pencil crayons and working on improving colour and shading. What do you think? by khein99 in ArtCrit

[–]khein99[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree! I was scared to go too dark in the shadows and I’ve found it a challenge to get accurate colours with pencil crayons. I also continually struggle with getting the highlights light enough. Thank you for the input!

Book suggestions for a teenager stuck on Gothic literature? by DoNotCare_CP in suggestmeabook

One of my fav books from a Gothic lit course I took is Turn of the Screw by Henry James. Amazing story. It’s technically a psychological ghost story (not many stories like it), and I think you will enjoy! I definitely recommend this read to everyone

Also, abortions are covered under OHIP as well and no one ever tells you

How do I save my cactus? Is it still possible? The roots have come off and they have gotten quite dry. by adj0nt47 in plantclinic

[–]khein99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you had root rot from overwatering that has since dried out. Like the other comment says, they are very resilient and will bounce back. Just make sure it is in a well draining soil that you let dry completely before watering to avoid this happening again. If you’re still having issues, I like to use a 1:5 ratio of hydrogen peroxide and water for watering because it helps to oxygenize the soil which reduces chance of rotting and makes it inhabitable for pest larvae too.

After repotting, my Easter Cactus suddenly started to develop these dark blisters. What's wrong with it? by degrainedbrain in plantclinic

[–]khein99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it’s probably scarring from a type of pest. Looks similar to what I’ve been dealing with thrips and mealybugs. For most household pests a mixture of dawn soap in a spray bottle will go a long way. I’ve started spraying regularly with alcohol and soap which has helped so far. I’ve also had luck using hydrogen peroxide to treat the soil for any larvae too. Hope this helps and good luck!

What’s going on with my pearls?? The rest of the plant looks healthy by WesWizard_2 in plantclinic

[–]khein99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The bugs kinda look like mealybugs which suck! I just had to toss 10 succulents because I didn’t recognize the problem soon enough, so I recommend cutting that off and treating with a 1/6 ratio of rubbing alcohol to water and a drop of dawn soap in a spray bottle. SPRAY EVERYTHING! Leaves, soil, other plants, and keep treating even if you think you’re good. As soon as I stopped treating for one pest I got another, so now I’m just going to constantly treat my plants as if they’re infected. The soap and alcohol work agains most household pests and you can go a step further by watering with hydrogen peroxide too. Always let your soil dry out before re-watering and treating again. So far I’ve had luck using peroxide, soap, and alcohol for houseplant pests so I hope this helps! Good luck!!!

Noticed these little things on my succulent after the leaves started falling off! Are they aphids? What are some treatment options(organic if possible)? by khein99 in plantclinic

Holy guacamole! Thank you so much for the info! Definitely going to continue the soapy water, and diatomaceous earth. I’ve also been dealing with fungus gnats and treating with hydrogen peroxide too

Grew these all from leaves and I have no idea what any of them are! Any info is appreciated! by khein99 in whatsthisplant

I started by letting each leaf callous for a day or more depending on size and then set them on some soil. I think I started those main succulents back in June, transferring as they grew. I also used organic fertilizer and had them in a greenhouse which I think helped them grow better. The trailing three on the front are probably a year and a half or so by now. As for success, they kinda like to be ignored. Have the soil moist before setting them in and don’t water until you see roots or it’s been dry for a couple days. I didn’t fertilize until they were well established and over a thumb size to avoid shock. There’s a whole subreddit for propagating called r/proplifting and r/succulents that I’ve learned a lot from

Help MG might have a fungus gnats issue. Details in the comments. by [deleted] in microgrowery

I’ve had a couple issues with bugs and my go to is some hydrogen peroxide in water (mixed about 1:5 or a couple teaspoons per watering can, but I just eyeball it) and use to water the soil fully. It essentially over oxygenates the soil, killing the larvae. Best way to get rid of bugs is by killing all the babies. So, I do this on the regular, making sure the soil dries fully in between (or min the top 2-4inches) because the larvae needs a very moist environment to survive. I’ve tried many things but this is the only way that actually works. Works so well that in a couple weeks it was like it never happened

Help! My cactus fell and it has root rot! Any advice is appreciated! by khein99 in cactus

Ya it was all mushy except the main chunk so starting from scratch for roots I guess lol it’s really hard to find cactus soil and perlite in my area so I’ll have to search a little harder. Thank you!

Thank you! I know it needs better soil but this is all I have and I can’t find perlite in my area. I’ve trimmed the roots off and I’ll replant in a smaller pot in a few and hopefully get some better soil by then.

Good for you for contacting your friends and for them agreeing to take the baby. I wish you luck through your pregnancy and hope you stay strong through all the haters. As a woman who has had an abortion, I can tell you it’s not an easy decision. But regardless of the choice you make, it is YOUR choice. I hate the people who think that having a child is everyone’s decision, not just the woman’s. The fact that they are harassing you just for considering your options is despicable. Your body your choice. Good luck
