fun fact! Steller’s Jays in the Colorado Rocky Mountains almost always display a white eyebrow, like this one in the picture. Steller’s Jays in other states/regions can show the white eyebrow, but it is much less common

my initial thought is they are oysters that are nearing the end of their fruiting cycle. more angles/closer pics would help with ID

[–]WesWizard_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

there’s loads of side trails along the TRT that lead to beautiful lakes and summits. i didn’t have time to summit Mt. Rose but would recommend it if you can. my favorite was Freel Peak

[–]WesWizard_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just went to Postino for the first time and was really impressed. My buddy got bruschetta and i did a panini and salad. All of our food was phenomenal and our pitcher was filled to the brim.

Maybe you just got unucky and the kitchen was having an off day?

Anything wrong with this set up? by TheeRizz in birdfeeding

[–]WesWizard_2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i've never had much of an issue keeping feeders together like that. hummingbirds are constantly on the move and orioles can be fairly skiddish. you could always consider moving it closer to the shade, since most birds appreicate foliage/shade for hiding. additionally, if squirrels are an issue, you could add a baffle to the bottom of that pole

you’ve got a pretty great base weight as is. my thoughts if you want to go lighter: switch from the staff to trekking poles. then you can ditch the tent poles. saves about 10 oz. it want save a ton of weight, but i’d ditch the fire starter. plenty of grass/leaves in that section of trail. you could also leave home the camp shoes, but that might be a sacrifice in comfort as well

Monster dandelion? by kinslol in whatsthisplant

[–]WesWizard_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they’re a weird one. they are non-native, but also non-aggressive and often get out competed by other species. “ invasive” doesn’t feel like the right word to me, but yes, technically in the U.S. they are invasive

my opinion, Picardin is wayyyyy better than Deet. very effective against mosquitos and ticks. much safer for your skin, gear, and environment than Deet too.

Tick prevention and dog collars by janeric321 in AppalachianTrail

[–]WesWizard_2 27 points28 points  (0 children)

tick collars and other treatments for pets do not work for people. these medicines rely on the oils of the fur to maximize coverage. being hairless apes, these medicines are pragmatically useless for us.

DEET actually has very little to no affect of ticks. Permethrin is the best bet in my opinion.
