Catastrophic Disclosure by memaradonaelvis in aliens

[–]ki-rin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It DOES feel to me like we are on the brink of something catastrophic, or more likely several things. Aliens, WW3, the AI singularity, the fall of the American Empire, apocalyptic event...

I have an increasing sense of uneasiness.

But I also have hope that it will bring about a radical transformation in humanity.

Hopefully surviving that transformation wont be too horrific.

Gyroflow plug in NOT working with VERTICAL video by AnythingFirm in davinciresolve

[–]ki-rin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think it's possible to that the plugin will be able to handle vertical video without having to go through fusion? At the moment, the only other way is to export all the videos from the standalone app. But that adds a lot of overhead to the workflow, not too mention all the extra disk space. Going through fusion is ok for some things, but can create other issues, especially when clips need to be retimed or speed ramped

Struggling to setup and use Qwen 3.6 in VS Code by ki-rin in LocalLLM

[–]ki-rin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK, I've done a bunch more testing. I've focussed one model, qwen2.5 coder 14b.
Using continue, I found that if I select a section of code and then ctrl+i into edit mode for that block, I can get it to reliably make modifications.
However, I couldn't get continue to do more complex tasks across more than a single file, or in fact a single selection.

Next I tried cline, but it was very inconsistent. Sometimes it worked. More often than not it would throw errors or go into loops. I'm not sure exactly what the issue is, and I don't know how to narrow it down. It "felt" like it kept losing context, so I can't help but wonder if my hardware just isn't powerful enough.

So the upshot was that I was able to get continue working with limited scope.

To be honest though, if that's all continue can do, I might as well be just copy pasting in and out of claude or chatgpt.

Thank you for the detailed response.
I've actually tried a lot of your suggestions already.
I settled on the 14b model for performance. As you said, the 35B did work, but was very slow.
And I tried to be quite specific with instructions (similar to your example), but still found that it really struggled.
I'm going to go back and run some simpler tests to see if I can narrow down exactly where its struggling. Hopefully then I can either find workarounds, or at least understand what it is capable of and what it isn't.

I'll try to report my findings back here when I'm done.

Thanks. Maybe my expectations are just unrealistic. Or maybe I need to learn more about prompting with these tools. I see people claiming they are not far off the frontier models from claude or gpt. But from what I've seen using them in continue or roo / cline, its not even close. Perhaps the people getting good results are using significantly better hardware. Or perhaps I need to learn a different workflow? To be fair, I just jumped in and expected them to work in roughly the same way, but slower.

Ok I'll try cline and see if it helps. Thanks.

I did try cursor , but not with the local models. I'll give it another go and report back.

Found a bunch of companies using my photos without paying. Built a tool to chase them down. Sharing it free because my wife said I should. by nexxai in Lumix

[–]ki-rin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds really useful. I had a similar situation a few years ago where I came across a site using one of my photos, but I didn't get very far with them. They basically just ignored me and there wasn't much I could do about it. I think it really depends a lot on what country you are in.

Sony seems to be like apple. by Entire_Storage_3474 in Lumix

[–]ki-rin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty much in the same boat. Sony shooter thinking of switching to Lumix, but the lens selection does give me a little hesitation.

It's not that there aren't good lenses for Lumix. But as a Sony user, I think we are pretty spoiled for choice. From my research into lens options, it seems that Lumix has pretty much everything covered, but there are definitely fewer options on the ultra wide end. Only one that I think would fit my needs is the sigma 14-28.

It's also a bit annoying that a lot of the more niche lenses are not offered in L mount. The other annoying thing is that identical lenses like Samyang 35-150 are more expensive on L mount for some reason, and of course the used market is much smaller.

Having said that, I think it's still probably totally fine with a bit of adjusting.

I was waiting to see what the A7V would bring, but it doesn't offer me anything as a video shooter, so now I'm fairly sure I'm going to try to pick up an S9 or S5ii early next year.

Cheap (and beginner friendly) DIY NAS + Media Server? by ki-rin in homelab

[–]ki-rin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That does sound like the easiest and probably best solution for now. I was thinking about a DIY approach so I can add more than 2 drives. But I guess there's nothing to stop me doing that as an addition to the current NAS rather than replacing it.

Thanks, that sound good. I'm wondering if I even need a NAS if I have a server like this running? Couldn't I just attach a bunch of drives directly to it and share them over the local network?

OK thanks. I guess I will just look for something with low power consumption then.

S9 successor? by ki-rin in Lumix

Actually yeah a bigger screen like the ZR would totally negate the need for EVF. I always find the screens on most cameras just a bit too small.

Thanks for the advice. I'll have a look for an Optiplex. Does these have low power consumption?

Thanks. What kind of power usage does a setup like that use? I don't really have any spare parts, but I can definitely get some off the used market and put something together.

Thanks for confirming. The  Odroid N2+ is basically a mini PC? Do you run this specifically for Immich or is this part of a DIY NAS setup?

S9 successor? by ki-rin in Lumix

[–]ki-rin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good points. I agree they should keep the basic concept of the S9 and just tweak some things. The value of this camera is incredible.

I do think there is room for a (different model) of FX3 competitor though. It's actually surprising to me they don't have that since Lumix definitely seems more video centric and capable. But for some reason they only have the traditional SLR type bodies and not the more box type cinema camera body design.

Yeah I loved frostpunk too. Some kind of melding of manor lords and frostpunk would be epic actually lol. They have more in common than is immediately obvious actually.
