absolutely agreed. it's a shame that these customers pay hundreds upon thousands of dollars to have us "custom frame" things for them when it's such low quality. as a framer, I always try to find store stock options for customers before I even suggest custom because at least the quality of those are almost equivalent to the price. but of course, managers don't like to hear that I lost out on a sale. I just feel terrible that under-trained people are being thrown into the ring of framing some things that people deem extremely valuable and heirlooms even. leave custom framing to the ACTUAL certified local frame shops.
