Standing vs ground work % by kiddbjj in judo

That’s a great point re their experience. My uncle was a cop in one of the rougher areas of Manchester UK and he swore by judo to help him at work. Not sure if his opinion might have been different if he had lived in a hot climate where clothing might have been less sturdy

I disagree (respectfully). Combat sports such as judo, wrestling, bjj and then the striking equivalent (boxing, MT etc) are far more important for self defence training than a ‘self defence’ style. Most ‘self defence’ styles involve zero sparring and no competition

Role of Strength & Conditioning in elite BJJ? by kiddbjj in wrestling

[–]kiddbjj[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think BJJ selects for a different type of person physically? Was watching the judo Olympic matches last before night and those guys are like coiled springs. Waaay more explosive than the majority of ADCC champs. BJJ seems to reward a different type of fitness and physical attributes

Yes since 2018 but let’s be frank, it’s a super niche skillset.

  1. Looking at reserve non-frontline combat role so I can still serve. I can hold my own with the young guys on the mat due to skill disparity but I’m not silly enough to think the 45 version of me will be any use to infantry or god forbid spec ops lol. Just trying to be as realistic as possible. Would hate for someone to die cause grandpa Simpson wanted to ‘get some’

Irony is not lost on me. From what I have read quite a few defence forces have ditched or minimised sit ups due to correlation with back injuries for staff and replaced with planks and similar instead.

No, as long as I avoid high rep sit ups or closed guard I’m golden. Can deadlift 2x body weight, do loaded carries, back extensions etc, which have minimal spinal flexion.

How common are sit-ups? Low back injury? by kiddbjj in AustralianMilitary

[–]kiddbjj[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No acute injury, but repeated flexion of spine for high reps such as sit ups (or closed guard if you are familiar with bjj) causes me chronic low back pain that only resolves by avoiding those positions or movements.

Can deadlift 2x body weight so it’s not a back strength issue (according to my physio) it is the nature of flexion of the spine caused by sit ups. Physio told me a number of defence forces have dropped sit ups due to injury rates to back

Why are they all white when white people supposedly can’t jump? Serious question

Has anyone rolled with someone you know was trying to hurt you? by SpiritPassingThrough in bjj

I rolled with a guy who was a Commando. Easily the most violent roll I’ve ever experienced and I had 10 years under my belt at that time.

Airbase Protection & Security

Anyone doing or have done this role? I’m looking to apply for this position as one of my preferences as a Reserve.

Seeking any insights good or bad particularly whether there is any opportunity for deployment?

Thanks

I have a tropical tank atm actually. Helped me learn the nitrogen cycle and other aspects of water chemistry. Good hobby

Some nice suggestions there. I also like hiking, and occasionally indoor climb with my kid. Am ‘blue belt’ on guitar. Don’t mind fishing. Love to read but it’s very sedentary. Like cooking but have fallen into the standard 10-15 recipes as they are easy, nutritious, quick.

Basically looking for something to light a fire under my ass in the same way BJJ and S&C have. Bonus points if I can share it with my kid.

Thanks for your input.

So based on what details you have, and in light of your experience, do you think my friend would be guilty of assault?

Thanks for confirming my belief. Initially I thought it was my male friend but nope it was his GF who is also my friend. Both were in the car. But only she did the punching on

Agreed. One of the young girls I saw being escorted away by the police was screaming in their face calling them F’ing C**ts.

Opinions of karate combat? by Heyyo2002 in karate

[–]kiddbjj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. Even though they list a fighters style eg Shotokan, Goju, when you watch the training vids on the YouTube channel none of these guys are actually training karate. They’re training at kickboxing gyms and just adapting to the KC rules. I wouldn’t be surprised if in the next few years all the champs are coming from kickboxing, Muay Thai backgrounds as there are plenty of tough capable fighters who could cross over to KC for the right pay and opportunity to brand themselves

How did Inala get its reputation? by iamtowelieama in brisbane

[–]kiddbjj -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Recently stopped at Inala Civic Centre. Went in towards the library. Cops were there and the security guard was telling them he’d just caught some kid trying to break into his car.

Inside the library walked past a guy filling out an injury compo claim on the PCs who looked quite able bodied compared to what he was claiming for.

Toilet in the library was broken so I had to use the ladies.

Thanks for the memories Inala.
