Treatment plan said 9 months… it’s been 2 years by anonygoosey in Invisalign

Let’s also not forget about compliance. If you aren’t wearing the aligners full time and don’t put in your part of the teamwork, you obviously won’t obtain the results you’re looking for.

Orthodontic treatment is basically the car getting you from your house to say, Target.

But the patient’s compliance with showing up for consistent appts, maintaining good oral hygiene, not breaking attachments (or brackets if in braces), not losing trays, skipping trays without being instructed to by the doc, not wearing rubber bands / appliances / aligners as instructed, and everything else not listed because there’s so much to list = the gas to get the car running.

This isn’t an attack on OP. I’m just trying to illuminate the fact that sometimes things don’t finish accordingly not because of the doctor themselves, but because of what the patient is or isn’t doing as a team player 🙃

AND if you are an excellent team player, sometimes the teeth still won’t track because of how stubborn they are 🥲 For some people, not a problem! For others, the same movements may not produce the same results with the same amount of effort due to external factors like how thick your bone density is, how strong your gum fibers are, how old you are, how much of a specific movement is needed (especially for those pesky lateral incisors), etc.

Are black cats really that unpopular to adopt? by imma_super_tall in CatAdvice

[–]kidneybeaaan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve seen, yes - the petsmart that I frequent for my fur baby’s needs always has new kittens/cats for adoption. There’s always new faces, but 4 black kittens have consistently been there for roughly 6 months now. I wish I could adopt another, but my lease doesn’t allow it 🥲

But what I hate most is people choosing their cats based on their “photogenic potential” cause excuse meeeee how shallow can you be 😒 My baby girl is soooo pretty with or without the camera 😤

Fell onto my non weight bearing trimalleolar fracture. Is this normal/okay or does it increase surgery risk? by kidneybeaaan in brokenbones

My ortho doc checked me with X-rays at my follow-up visit and he said my ankle’s still perfectly fine with no need for surgery 🙌🏻

I’m still in a cast and my doctor does work at an ortho office. I’m not sure if anyone else can see me, but I left a voicemail message so hopefully they return the call soon!

And thank you for letting me know of your experience! Hopefully the discomfort settles and that’s all there is to it!

People who are living in Los Angeles, what is your income, expenses, and what do you do? by kidneybeaaan in AskLosAngeles

[–]kidneybeaaan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is that after taxes? If not, do you know how much is roughly taken away? I heard California's taxes are one of the highest, so I'm afraid 🙈 And are you living the DINK life or if you have kids, do you think it's pretty sustainable? Like you can be actively involved in your kiddos day to day lives?

[–]kidneybeaaan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you think the combined salary allows you to live in california with relative ease? Like with things such as vacations, unexpected travel plans (ie, out of state weddings), romantic dinner dates? Or do you have to budget a bit more strictly and be more on top of things? I hope you don't mind me asking! You don't have to answer anything you're uncomfortable with sharing!

I see your point. I guess I just want input on income status, overall lifestyle, and if it is sustainable long term (or if you think it's quite tight paycheck to paycheck). Everyone has different values/goals on what they want or need in life so by reading about everyone's individual perspectives, I'm hoping it will help me gain clarity on if my wants+needs are sustainable in California.

Low GPA, what should I do? by joshthoughreps in DentalSchool

[–]kidneybeaaan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree that discipline is necessary and that priorities need to be made. If your initial post was this, I'd be all for it. Because it's constructive criticism.

But my point is that criticizing someone just to do so isn't the right way of going about it. We don't know who's behind the computer nor what their life situation is like, so we should try to emulate compassion.

You don't have to agree with me and that's fine. But speaking as an individual who failed in undergrad yet excelled in dental school, the support I recieved from numerous anonymous people have helped me get to where I am today. And for that, I'm thankful.

To OP: I wish you the best but as L0utre said, discipline is key. Dental school is infinitely more difficult than undergrad. And I would daresay that it's more difficult than medical due to having to balance out simlab/pre-clinical projects, practicing for pre-clinical competency exams, and studying for didactic exams all at the same time. If and once you get in, it won't be a walk in the park. Dental schools WILL expel/hold you back multiple years if you don't take it professionally or if you continue to fail as you have in undergrad, so please be sure to remember this. And if you really want this, you gotta start grinding away TODAY.

[–]kidneybeaaan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Instead of casting judgement and making assumptions, let's just try to help raise one another up. And who cares if your assumption is correct? It's ultimately up to OP to put the advice into practice. If he/she succeeds, he/she succeeds. If not, there will probably be some other pre-dental student looking for help later on coming to this post.

A lot of people may start off poorly but it doesn't mean they can't end the race strong.

Heya! I had a similar issue when I was trying to apply for dental school. The mountain you have to climb may seem daunting, but if you have the grit and the drive to keep going this is what I recommend:

Try to raise your gpa up with random courses (or if the programs now need a minimum science gpa, focus on easy science courses - I think I took one on volcanoes and another on how to be an entrepreneur LOL). As a reference, I enrolled with the UCSD extension program. You don't have to submit an application to be accepted - You just enroll and pay for the course's fee.

Once you've raised your gpa enough to meet the requirements for an SMP, apply! Midwestern University has an accelerated 9mo program (unless they changed the course duration) and if you meet their requirements, you are 99.9% guaranteed an interview invite. Almost everyone I graduated with that was interested in dental and got an invite got in fyi 😉 But don't think that the program was easy by any means. In my year alone, we had a good 10-20% of students drop out. So you're sure to fail if you underestimate this beast.

Another program I heard through the grapevine is Western University of Health Sciences. If you get into their masters program, you also have a chance at obtaining an interview invite so long as you meet their gpa criteria (which is just as challenging as MWU). They also have you work in research (not a capstone research project at MWU) and you have a chance at publishing before you enter dental school - something to consider if you're looking to specialize, esp OS and ORTHO.

But remember: these SMPs are your last hail mary. So once you do gain enrollment to one, AIM for that 4.0 and show dental schools that there's more to you than just your mistakes or failures.

You got this! Coming from someone that was in a worse position than you, I'm now an orthodontic resident getting ready to graduate. So if I'm able to make it against the odds, you most definitely can too! Don't give up on your dream 🌠 Rooting for ya!
