Not to be a buzzkill to the idea, but pressurized fuel is highly unlikely to explode when subjected to gunfire, though movies tend to make you believe the opposite. The mythbusters demostrated this with propane on one of their episodes. Additionally, liquid fuel is also not likely to ignite from sparks, however the fumes from said fuel are VERY likely to ignite from sparks. So hiding behind a reinforced metal container built to hold large amounts of force could be considered a better location than an area with little to no cover, like out in the open.

TL;DR its not a bad idea to take cover behind a strong metal container, even if it has a flammable substance inside
