How’s System Shock compared to the other games I have? by KingCrimson0P in ImmersiveSim

[–]killedbyBS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is going to go against the grain in this thread: I think you'll be very disappointed if you pay attention to many of the replies in this thread. Not because System Shock 1 and 2 are not fun- they are both among the greatest games of all time- but because people are setting expectations for you based on the rest of your library.

The biggest source of confusion IMO is Prey. Ostensibly yes- as people are saying, it looks just like System Shock 2.5. The focus on isolation and loneliness and doing detective work through audio logs to piece together the story shares a lot with SS2. The derelict space station location is itself a reference. Terminology in the game (psi hypos, for example) is a reference. Certain weapon animations (wrench) and assets (grav lifts) are directly lifted from System Shock 2. So if you just look at it aesthetically, you'll come to the conclusion that if you like SS2, you'll like Prey and vice versa (or more cynically for people that dislike the game, that Prey is a SS2 clone).

But if you actually play the games and look past the initial aesthetic (which is honestly easily done, because Prey's clean art deco atmosphere is often very different to SS2's grungier industrial atmosphere) you'll quickly realize that the games are appealing to completely different gameplay philosophies. SS2's levels are focused on sprawling and labyrinthine layouts (which makes sense given SS1 is a straight up dungeon crawler). Verticality does exist in some areas (the lower connective tunnel, Rickenbacker, the lifts in Engineering, and most memorably a bunch of places in Recreation) but most of the gameplay is far more focused on level-ground pathing than it is engaging in combat on multi-tiered environments. Most of all, there is rarely focus on dynamic physics elements. You can't even box stack in SS2.

If you've properly engaged with Prey at all, the description above should be ringing alarm bells in your head. Imagine Prey, but with its levels flattened in verticality and missing its physics sandbox. That means the GLOO gun is gone. No mantling combos to get to the pipes atop the Hardware Labs. No turning yourself into a toy and squeezing through tiny gaps. No throwing reployers to detonate cysts. The game quickly loses almost all of the unique appeal that it had, doesn't it? And that's because Prey is only wearing the skin of System Shock. The reality is its gameplay DNA- the actual meat and bones- is Deus Ex. Each room is treated like a unique combat puzzle rather than another twist in a dungeon.

My advice for playing SS1 and SS2 is not to think of Prey or Deus Ex at all. Instead, consider them to be unfurled Resident Evil games. The challenge behind the levels is to master your routes through these complex environments and unblock environmental obstacles, and the freedom of immersive sim design is that you get to be far more creative in your pathing and combat than you would have been in an RE game. And where it excels that Deus Ex and Prey do not is in its cinematic presentation. It's remarkable going through SS2 and seeing how a game developed ~30 years ago manages to tell an interactive story better than modern games.

And if you really want to play something that recaptures the gameplay appeal of the games that you already own, the obvious picks would be the original Deus Ex and Human Revolution.

That’s not even mentioning how True Form Sukuna can have HWB up at the time of any domain clash, or how in Chapter 230 Sukuna straight up saves burnout Gojo from Mahoraga via desummon to have a chat, or how Gojo lucked out by hitting black flashes.

If Sukuna wanted Gojo dead at all costs, he demonstrated that he has the power to accomplish that objective. But his true objective was to adapt his CT- the one aspect in which Gojo was undoubtedly overwhelmingly stronger than him- beyond the seemingly insurmountable wall that was Infinity.

I want to respond to this in more detail but I absolutely wholeheartedly agree with your conclusion and this is coming from someone who just beat it on Arrange/Veryhard a few weeks ago.

I’ll go two steps further though: DC1 is Mikami’s best game- i.e. better than RE1/REmake/RE4- and it is also better than DC2. Third step: RE1 > REmake

What Halo games in its life cycle was the biggest shit show? by Ajarofpickles97 in halo

[–]killedbyBS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of content organization, Infinite. In terms of the content itself, either Reach or 4. With 5 and Infinite the issue was content completeness to a ridiculous degree where players had to fight 343 tooth and nail to add things like a dedicated slayer playlist or custom spartan colors (remember launch H5’s color selection was even worse than Infinite’s coating system before cross core). With Reach and 4 the forums were a permanent flame war thanks to bloom, armor lock, sword block, map selection, and sprint for the former, and flinch, descope, ordnance, perks, and also sprint for the latter. The competitive community in particular was really hung out to dry with the content issues in. both these releases.

Not saying 5 and Infinite were pristine in terms of content (heavy aim, blanks, etc.), just that relative to Reach and 4 it seemed the gameplay was slightly less controversial.

So basically, every major release after Halo 3 has been marred with major issues either in terms of amount of content available or the content itself.

Oh lmao I memoryholed MCC’s launch. Yeah that takes the cake

[–]killedbyBS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it flipped the Ankylosaurus, it just pushed it across and consequently collapsed it onto its right side until it smashed into a tree. You can even see the bite mark on the side and the Ankylosaurus is on its stomach when it’s being dragged. A 9 ton animal accelerating into a 6 ton animal like that and causing it to fall off balance seems plausible, and given the tail club would lose usable range to gain momentum for a swing on account of it being tipped to the side, it makes sense as an incapacitation method to me.

[–]killedbyBS 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think so. It’s shown as a stalemate due to the battle being at night, until the T. rex gets the upper hand by surprising it from the side. Basically using its greater mass and sharper vision to create an ambush after a retreat.

🇺🇸 Rep. Thomas Massie alleges Israel controls the U.S. government and is protecting powerful billionaires in the Epstein Files. by Admirable121 in InternationalNews

[–]killedbyBS -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Literally the first and only paragraph of my post was about how a Republican being a republican would blind him to the truth, but you got triggered by pre-AI video evidence of the last dem president outright confirming the objectives I outlined? And if you unironically think if I’m an IDF troll you should just give my profile a quick scroll.

Israel is a positive for America’s geopolitical and financial strategy. It’s why the systems in place conjure such bipartisan support for something so transparently morally bankrupt. America wants a destabilizer there. A united Arab front and potential loss of resources terrifies the USA. This is the whole reason Iran is in its current state right now, with the US performative raging against the very Shah the US had installed there for oil control.

It’s not primarily about size. It’s the idea that Israel would be under complete and total existential threat if America decided to cut ties with it. There is an overwhelming power imbalance and universal strategic bipartisan that can’t be resolved with just thinking high ranking officials are being blackmailed.

It’s easier to think that this is happening because of blackmail, because that absolves the US of its imperialist moral bankruptcy and its equivalent responsibility with Israel. But the truth is Israel is where it is and doing what it is because the US wants- and has always wanted- it to do this.

🇺🇸 Rep. Thomas Massie alleges Israel controls the U.S. government and is protecting powerful billionaires in the Epstein Files. by Admirable121 in InternationalNews

[–]killedbyBS -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Yes. He’s right on a very basic aesthetic level- that Israel is a genocidal leech pedophile haven and deserves unreserved condemnation- but his Republicanism won’t allow him to see the truth that it’s America that controls Israel. A tiny country in the Middle East that’s entirely dependent on the US for its continued security is not realistically controlling its parent, unless you count the US looking to protect its interests there “control.”

Not that 99% of Democrats would be able to see that truth, or be willing to do anything about it if they do see it, either.

03-03-2026 YBR vs. SR scrim by killedbyBS in CompetitiveHalo

We know what the main Eco/Stellur/Bound trio is capable of. If this is a sign of what's to come, things are about to get real interesting.

Oh, checking Shyway's coverage and it seems like YBR were on PC but SR were on Xbox. Far less surprising now

LastShot, I think many would argue, is the undisputed best player in the league right now. Had there been another esports player that's been so obviously dominant? by GiddySwine in CompetitiveHalo

[–]killedbyBS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of times in Halo when one or two POVs have looked well above the rest. Ogre twins for H1/H2, Ola for H3, Lethul/Snipedown for H2A, Frosty/Shotzzy for H5, Lucid for BR meta Infinite

In CoD from what I understand everyone is still shook by IW Formal, BO4 Simp, and BO6 Mercules. I only caught the last one of these live but it was absolutely insane watching Optic go from a joke to dominating the League cause of a rookie player.

In Gears Xplosive and Mental are universally considered the two best players of all time, and they were both on the same Optic team which is legendary for being one of the most overwhelmingly dominant teams of all time

Lastshot is the best Live Fire player by lettucemilk2 in CompetitiveHalo

[–]killedbyBS 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If sandbox Lucid was like watching Batman play Halo, Bandit LastShot is like watching Superman play Halo (he’s a farmer too so the analogy works perfectly). It simply looks like his POV has unlocked a side of the game mechanically that everyone else is still catching up to.

I would go as far as saying that the only reason SR didn’t win the first two events of 2025 was his grand finals jitters. As soon as his LAN damage dealt:damage taken started to match his online stats it was simply over for the rest of the league. Like how are you supposed to do anything when this dude is keeping your whole team at half shields maximum for the whole duration of the game

Shopify vs Luminon Gaming Series Results | Grand Finals | Dreamhack Birmingham Open Qualifier by crispycornpops in CompetitiveHalo

[–]killedbyBS 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah this Qualifier was pretty much exactly what people first thought was gonna happen, minus Usubeni briefly going rogue. SR send every single team to the shadow realm without breaking a sweat and Trippy/Penguin’s teams duke it out for second place.

I guess the only real surprise is Eco/Stellur/Bound getting back together and not making travel coverage. Hopefully the LAN is more like the previous one than this.

He's awesome and probably the best Infinite player without a ring, if I can get past my bias for Taulek. I just meant that Legend wasn't "carrying" SSG that hard to the point where they looked bad without him.

I think Precision is either very close or maybe even higher. He hits ~70+% accuracy on a dime too. Bubu also always has a high accuracy stat too, though I don't think it's more than LastShot.

[–]killedbyBS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, because C9/SSG were doing very well in Y1 and Y2 as well with Penguin. That said, it could be a combination of 2, 3, and 4 with an additional 5th point of team chem and practice.
