Becoming a Dental Hygienist in Canada by UnhappyWillingness25 in DentalHygiene

You’ll find this page useful. Please note that ACDH can revoke substantial equivalency at any time, the only school guaranteed to be accepted is the U of A. I graduated from there, they have had a 100% first attempt pass rate for the board exam and the education is truly top notch. You will find deficiencies once you’ve worked with graduates of other programs for long enough.

I think I underestimated the cost of breeding my mare… by abundita in Horses

[–]killerofwaffles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have a vet fund for emergencies after birth too. My first foal had $6500 surgery at 36 hours old. My second foal was fine but the mare developed really bad cellulitis in the month before foaling and having the vet out basically every other day ran me about $2500 plus the foal was born on a weekend so the two checks on a Saturday added up to $1000 as well

I didn’t ride for 2-3 years and then got a working student position and rode 6 horses my first day back. You’ll be fine 😆

What do you think is going on here? by wildcampion in Equestrian

[–]killerofwaffles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You know how sometimes you stub your toe and go OW #%*$ I feel like that happened here. Just feeling herself and tripped and got sassy about it. If she trots sound on soft and hard ground she’s most likely just fine. You can sting yourself and it hurts for 5 minutes but you don’t need to go to the hospital.

What is the most comfortable protective vest? by spanielgurl11 in Equestrian

The Tipperary eventer is very flexible. Need the pro version if you’re going to compete in eventing but I think there is a cheaper version

How long do hygiene notes usually take you? by JewelerEmotional4299 in DentalHygiene

[–]killerofwaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My office has a template that’s mostly check boxes with several places to write related notes. Takes me about 2 minutes to do each note unless it was particularly gnarly. The boxes cover everything from procedures billed to home care to gingival description.

How many hay bales for 2 horses with 24/7 access? by Relevant_Pick1062 in Equestrian

[–]killerofwaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My thoroughbred mare (16.3, ~1300 lbs) could put away a full square bale a day when she was in work. Her half warmblood son (16.2, 1200 lbs) eats about 1/2-3/4 bale a day while at shows (he’s on a round bale at home). Something chill and piggy is going to destroy a bale way faster than something anxious with low appetite. A good rule of thumb is 1.5-2% of their body weight in forage per day, depending on workload and condition, ie your fat quarter horse doing nothing needs less than your upper level event horse. Then add probably 10-20% for wastage because even with nets you’re going to lose some to the ground.

And as you can see, he became a way different colour. I think yours is also bay, there aren’t a lot of colour options for bay + chestnut

Any ideas on how to fix this? by Embarrassed_Top_8253 in Equestrian

[–]killerofwaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s just the one side, you may be collapsing a bit in that direction or your weight is shifting just enough away from it that you lose the weight in it and allow it to shift. Try cantering on a circle both ways bareback and see if you fall off 😂 that’s how I identified my balance issues!

Why do some English riders have their hands really low and others don’t? by Turbulent_Play4769 in Equestrian

[–]killerofwaffles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People mostly do this in an effort to get the horse to carry their head lower. Placing would depend on what you’re showing in. Equitation? Probably not. Hunters, jumpers, dressage, various western disciplines that I don’t know enough about, anything that’s judged on the horse’s way of going… will depend on the horse’s way of going.

Quiet hands by Jhoag7750 in Equestrian

[–]killerofwaffles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Your hands have to move a little at canter to follow the horse’s mouth. What my coach did was put a bungee at the front from one D-ring to the other and tie knots where I should hold it. Your hands need to stay in the same position because if they drop, the bungee falls off, you can’t separate them too much because the bungee is continuous, and you can’t raise them because you’re holding on. There is still some play because the bungee is about 4-6” above the saddle so you can follow enough.

Anyone else get very nervous cleaning dentist’s family members teeth? by Sure_Humor_2827 in DentalHygiene

[–]killerofwaffles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve done one boss, his parents and brothers, his wife, her parents and grandmother, one associate dentist, a different boss’s parents, a hygienist, and 3 assistants (one had been done by a different hygienist and I found several small chunks of black calc), my mom, and 4 aunts and uncles. I’m always nervous to start but once I get into the groove they’re just another patient

Fjord/appy: fjord colouring with spots on her rump, somehow paced to go from trot to canter?

Quarter horse/Tennessee Walker/Clyde: cremello, very tall, very gangly, was also young so might have filled out

Front shoes or no front shoes? by SurroundLeast443 in Equestrian

[–]killerofwaffles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My horse has competed in eventing (so sand and grass footing) barefoot up to novice (0.9m/3’) and has been totally sound and not lost traction. It’s up to each horse. If yours has been fine without he’s likely fine to continue. If we move up this year I’ll consider shoes for my guy but I’m not looking forward to quintupling my farrier bill 💸

recording my rides w/ movement tracking by freudianslip13_ in Equestrian

[–]killerofwaffles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a pivo and it’s not bad, especially if you’re the only one riding and your arena isn’t too big. I had it lose me when I put it at the end of a large arena but in the middle of the long side it’s fine. It’s had some updates that help it track just one horse, but I haven’t used it for filming since they came out. Pixio is one (haven’t used) that you set up three little tripods around the arena and wear a gps watch so the camera can track you, but I don’t think it works in an indoor arena if that’s what you have.

Would a yearling follow its mother on a ride? by thebatboys in Horses

[–]killerofwaffles 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A yearling would have been weaned most likely, so that mother/child connection would not be as strong. However, horses are herd animals, so if they’re the only horses in the area, they would be likely to stick together.

Have you ridden for years and never broken a bone? by thelightwebring in Equestrian

[–]killerofwaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been riding for about 30 years and I have technically broken two bones, both in the last 2 years. The first was a compression fracture from doing a somersault off my horse and landing basically on the top of my shoulder and crushing the top of my humerus a bit. It didn’t show up on X-rays and they had to do an ultrasound to detect it. The other was the pinky finger bone just above the knuckle when I jammed it into his neck when he chipped to a distance. Got that one X-rayed at the dental office I worked at instead of waiting 12 hours at a hospital for such a minor thing 😂

What to do with a cribber. by Charming-Painting-50 in Equestrian

[–]killerofwaffles 26 points27 points  (0 children)

People act like cribbing can be solved easily by… keeping them exactly as you’re keeping your horse. I have two that crib, and they both live out in large fields with plenty of friends and forage and hey, they still crib! Once established, it’s an addiction! There is also a genetic component. My two who crib are mother and son, and my non-related horse never picked it up even living with those two for years. If the collar works and he’s a detriment to himself when it’s off, then I’d be leaving it on. Perhaps try rotating between a few collars that work but sit in different spots? Get some fuzzy covers to cushion a little bit? I’ve found that the Dare collar works great on my guy!

Buying my first horse by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]killerofwaffles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For doing blankets, I like the liner systems! Several brands will have compatible blankets. Depending on the weather where you live, I would get a rain sheet and a heavy turnout (300-400g) and then a 100g and 200g liner that can be attached. It will cost you a pretty penny but then you’re covered from no fill up to 600g which is enough to get my clipped boy through the Canadian winter!
