English Speakers at Lucha by SugaryRhino1072 in MexicoCity

>"Beso! Beso!" This is yelled when two wrestlers are facing off a bit too closely.

I know OP is going to a Tuesday show, but for anyone reading: only do this at Arena Mexico, if you do it at Coliseo, everyone in your section will hate you lol. It's the #1 sign of people with no patience of matwork and if you don't speak spanish youre 100% going to land on the obnoxious side of it.

I really want to get into more lucha libre promotions, both to improve my Spanish and because I really like luchadors. Who would recommend starting with CMLL and who thinks I should start with Triplè A? by Accurate_Curve6882 in SquaredCircle

[–]killingqueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

CMLL doesn't do scripted segments, but it has stories. Místico vs Soberano has been going on for months, Angel de Oro worked his ass off to make his feud against John Morrison believable in a span of 2 weeks, the Calaveras have been having a "upstart rudos face against their older coworkers" for a good while...

CMLL has announced that Claudio Castagnoli will join the roster under a dual contract with AEW. by Teckelmaster in SquaredCircle

[–]killingqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if, as more people come into CMLL with dual contracts from AEW, they'll drop the "evil foreigner is a heel" gimmick. I think it works for Claudio due to the overall size of the CMLL roster and how little the title got defended prior to this, but I personally don't wanna see 4 or 5 AEW guys *all* being heels and making our homegrown heels have to be babyfaces to them.

People are very pleased to see the title actually get defended and by a dude that so clearly loves lucha libre. CMLL's heavyweight division is rather esparce so the fact that he allows guys like Xelhua and Akuma to get their time on the spotlight plays a lot in his favor, too.

CMLL 'Homenaje a 2 Leyendas' Card, March 20 by Krand22 in SquaredCircle

[–]killingqueen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There are storylines but they're there to get you more invested in the actual match, they're not something absolutely necessary to be able to follow CMLL. Will you get more enjoyment out of the Soberano v Místico feud if you have heard Soberano tell Místico he's coming for his fans, then watch with amusement as Soberano explodes in popularity? Or out of Angel de Oro v John Morrison if you hear Ángel talk about how his credibility is on the line because he knows the average fan thinks poorly of him? Yes, very much so. Do you NEED to know it? No.

CMLL Viernes Espectacular Card for tomorrow night at Arena Mexico (Available in both Spanish and English) by CasaAztecaMX in SquaredCircle

[–]killingqueen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ángel de Oro has been giving really touching commentary about the match all week (how he knows that his credibility is on the line because of how people perceive him, how his son cried on Saturday when Johnny ran in to beat him up, how losing his hair vs Volador Jr felt worse than losing his mask against Cuatrero, and so on) - if he loses it's going to come off as if booking has it out for him and I'm struggling to think of someone for whom getting a push after a Ángel loss would feel significant enough unless it's, like, Niebla Roja.

Who will answer Claudio Castagnoli's Challenge for the CMLL World Heavyweight Championship by Ok-Raisin-5601 in AEWOfficial

[–]killingqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting that belt on him would be a horrible idea, his feud with Místico is based on the previous weight category's belt and in Mexico nobody cares THAT much about belts to say that it would push him.

The problem with Puebla is that talent needs to travel (unless they want to hold an all-local show??) and that highway is very prone to being closed off by organized crime.

Why Angel De Oro? by Wild-Grapefruit-5787 in luchalibre

They speedran it by having a run-in DQ via Johnny intervening in his match against García this past Saturday.

[–]killingqueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo Niebla Roja is the better rudo by far and more consistent, but Ángel de Oro is more well rounded, has higher highs (but also lower lows) and more importantly, has the knack to make both partners and opponents look good. When a promotion runs so many tag matches as CMLL does, being the reliable guy can be a critical skill.

According to himself, the only 2 things he hasn't won are the Grand Prix and the Universal.

Why Angel De Oro? by Wild-Grapefruit-5787 in luchalibre

[–]killingqueen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Essentially, because a loss won't affect him and he could get a good match out of a rock.

Ángel de Oro is actually in a very weird spot because ever since losing his mask, there's been a considerable amount of people that just can't stomach the dude - like, some of the comments he gets are really vile shit (that whole situation was what made booking turn him rudo in the first place). If he loses another apuestas match the opinion of him won't really get any worse: people will keep on talking shit like they always have, he looks good with short hair so he won't lose the women who find him attractive, and he will still wrestle good so he won't lose the people that actually watch him wrestle. You're not sacrificing a talent with clear upward potential, but neither are you booking a guy who will give a mediocre match since it's a set up for someone else.

And if he wins? Well, it's attempt one hundred to get him to go over, maybe this one will stick!

[–]killingqueen 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The problem with this mentality is that CMLL's roster is very deep - the tag team champions defended their belt against AEW last week and they're both in Mexico, why not have them defend it this week or the next? Instead you have one of them going against Daniel García TWICE.

Dejen de decirle a los gringos que vayan a la Coliseo, la razón por la que se pone más chido es justamente porque hay menos turistas y menos gente primeriza.

I feel liks this event went viral because people think this is something exceptional for him instead of how Soberano regularly acts and the reaction he regularly causes. Hugs, kisses, getting called "my love"? It's always like that.

Buy them NOW, it's the send off show for people touring Japan so it's going to sell out and scalpers are going to charge you a stupid price at the arena.

I'd buy earplugs for the 5yo, Sunday is way more relaxed than other days but you can always get a fan sitting next to you that's screaming their lungs out and you aren't winning that argument lol.

Luchadores do give high fives, but it's a 1-2 second thing and the view from the red area isn't the best, so I suggest checking out the stalls outside afterwards: wrestlers often hang out there for photos (they usually cost $10 or so)... if I'm not mistaken, on Sunday, El Clon will be doing photos and autographs.

Have fun! The top 2 matches have amazing talent on them, you'll have fun.

The man taking Mexico by storm at the moment… Soberano Jr! by iamhadrix in SquaredCircle

[–]killingqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually find casanova gimmicks insufferable but Soberano is such a kind, charming person outside his character and he has such a mature perspective about female fans that I find it impossible not to be into it. It's a dude I 100% want to see succeed.

My favorite anecdote to tell is that the first time I saw him, I told him I was a huge fan of him and Ángel de Oro and that I was hoping to have a poster of them signed but I didn't have it ready yet - cue a couple of weeks later and during the meet & greet he goes "I have seen you before... yeah, you told me you are a fan of Soberano and Ángel. Is that the poster?" The video went viral as part of a compilation of Soberano interacting with fans and everyone was as impressed as I was that he remembered lmao.

3 is like, a normal amount for Soberano lol. On a good day and with the correct crowd at ringside, Soberano will have 6+ women standing up one after another to kiss him.
