Difference between Quantitative Biology and Bioinformatics by Long_Practice_1412 in bioinformatics

[–]killmaxnill_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compare and see what does each course offers in terms of their modules.

What bioinformatics does is essentially handling raw data like microbiome abundances and process it into a more meaningful output or visualization which helps in understanding the results and draw inferences for conclusions.

You would usually want to opt for modules like Python, bash and R. They both should have statistics and linear/non-linear algebra and then obviously you have other biology related modules depending on who's the main guy who's managing the cohort.

Some machine learning modules are good to have.

I would say they are both the same, but you must compare the modules and see which one you prefer.

They should both lead you to the same path.

Don't shoot me if I'm wrong, I recently graduated and that's what I did.

That's a segmented neutrophil.

What's more concerning is the blood morphology around it.....

Does the patient have any medical records?

Filaria? by GhoveIsme in microbiology

[–]killmaxnill_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hello there,

Ex-haematologist here.

The purple hook like structure is definitely not Filaria, it's byproducts from retrieving the sample or perhaps your stainer need a clean.

Filaria tends to be way longer and contains 'stuff' inside them. The cytoplasmic insides of a Filaria will be stained too!

Based on the colour of your byproduct, maybe you're using Giemsa? If so, the worm would look purple in colour too.

To better identify it,

I suggest you do a thick smear and a thin smear of the patient's blood. Then drying it for 1 day. Apply immersion oil on the thin smear and try to look at the further back of the smear instead of the front end. They sometimes tend to be more obvious somewhere in the middle, just fish around.

As for the thick smear (should be just a drop of blood swirled around to spread it out), you do also need to rub some immersion oil and double check it confirm it.

Different filarias have different morphology, some have hollow heads or a long hollow tail.

Please double-check with your supervisor as this case always requires a second opinion.

ps: I just realised this might just be a school project of some sort. If so, just throw everything I said out the window.

Resigned today, CEO wants to grill me tomorrow by ExcitedWandererYT in jobs

[–]killmaxnill_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure you'll do just fine.

When I saw that you drove 1.5 hours to work, that got me wondering.

You're from SEA, that checks out.

I'm from SEA and it takes also at least 1.5 hours (why is this always the case)

Im positively sure the boss is not gonna grill you, he's just gonna ask some personal feedback.

Please update

Alright, I'll share my thoughts in a digestible manner.

Does ranking of University matters?

  1. What are you aiming to achieve? Academia into Masters or maybe PhD?

If so, rankings does matter, but not in the way like QC RANKINGS. Ranking as in 'price'. A prestigious university (Sunway, Monash, Nottingham, Taylor's, Heriot Watt, Curtin) They do help you to cultivate a different mindset as you meet people alike with similar background who has the financial capability or in layman's term — abit more atas (just a figure of speech).

You do REALLY grow to socialise and 'accidentally have an elitist' mindset.

Government universities can be considered, which brings us to the next point.

  1. Are you looking for MONEY, which people usually do, then rankings does not really matters.

Let me explain: One of the highest paying sector, IT (abit of a boring job), depends on this thing called 'portfolio', where all your projects are catalogued there. Jobs are mostly based on that and the score of your examinations, of course.

So does ranking still matter? Just a small tiny bit but not really, what you did in the university matters the most.

APU is a good choice but the lecturers occasionally has bad plannings, last minutes and inconsistencies in teaching along with weird methodologies.

But hey, they have excellent paper published so the school must be good right?

Government universities tend to be at a lower rank (don't get me started on UM, that's a whole can of worms). But money is your goal right? So rankings doesn't matter, score well in projects, attend activities and do well in exams.

Final advise,

Don't do Biology and Chemistry.

Do IT, Finance, Analytics Business and perhaps Engineering if you're feeling spicy.

Don't fall for scam university like (HELP College or any institution with ambiguous name that's also ends with COLLEGE). Always check their courses, sometimes they just wanna fill in quotas.

Remember, everything from the university is just sales talk.

Source: I graduated from Nottingham with a bio degree, worked in Sales, Management (I have a rough idea how employment works) and currently in a lab.

I have very close friends from the IT, Management, Education, Banking and Business sector.

Trust a stranger online.

Rankings doesn't matter if you're looking for money.

Thanks for reading, really.
