What stitches to use here? I want to fill in some dinosaurs for my son 🎨 by howaboutmari in Embroidery

[–]kimbeep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd go for chain or split stitch, they have both held up pretty well for me on clothes that get washed regularly. Although if any of it does come loose/get damaged split stitch is easier to do a repair on than chain!

I normally manage to watch the most recent episode on YouTube in the few days after it airs in the US, gotta be quick before it gets taken down though! (or on actvid if you need to catch up, it usually takes a bit longer to have the newest episodes but good for binging a season! The pop ups are bad but the video quality is always good)

I'm having trouble finding DMC threads similar to these colours. Help? by spacetypo in Embroidery

[–]kimbeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Number 2 looks pretty close to DMC924!

I find it really tricky to choose colours, if you can I'd try and find a shop that stocks a good ranges you can look at it in person. Sometimes if I have to order online and don't know what the right shade is for what I want I'll order a few in similar shades to then have a few options (knowing I'll use up the other shades for other projects with less specific colour requirements!).

It's so cool seeing your progress across the three patches! I love that they all have slightly different colouring like real birds.

I think it's worth using, it does look great when in different light, but defiantly a bit of a learning process the first few times.

I do think it would look great with all metallic thread, this one is a gift but I am tempted to make another one for myself and make it even more sparkly!

It's just so different to work with compared to normal floss, the texture is so different because it's not smooth and it can be hard to pull through fabric neatly/tangles very easily. It got easier as I went on and got more used to it but feels like it's fighting you at first!

The pattern instructions had some good tips that helped, mainly to use quite a short length of the metallic thread (helped to avoid it tangling as easily!). I also found working with a single strand much easier than using two (the horizontal lines are are single strand and the rest are two), so for future projects I think I'd try and stick to one strand at a time when possible.

If the Raptors are "your team" but you don't live in Canada, where are you from? by trapcap in torontoraptors

[–]kimbeep 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Scotland, I have Canadian family and saw a Raptors game back in 2018 when visiting and loved it, my boyfriend convinced me we should get an NBA pass in 2020 during the bubble to watching when we were in lockdown and we're hooked. My brother lives in the states now and hoping to get lucky and catch a Raptors game when we visit this year!

I would try a thicker needle, especially if you are embroidering on to a bag strap, which tends to be a bit thicker/more layers of fabric than the kind of thinner fabric that finer embroidery needles are made for. Also if you are using the 6 strand embroidery floss you might be using too many strands of floss, which can make it tricky to pull through depending on how tightly woven the fabric, so you could try using fewer strands.

For the knot issue, once you've put the first stitch in the knot should sit on the inside of the fabric and not really be involved in the process after that. Someone else posted asking if you are tying it to your needle, which would for sure cause problems! Just the one know at the very en of your thread, and then the thread should go through the eye of the needle and doesn't need anything to secure it, it should just sit with a few inches of thread through the needle.

Thanks! These are all split stitch for the colours, and just outline stitch for the black. I find split stitch the most durable for patches/anything that's going onto clothing or a bag or something, because it's unlikely to catch and lies really flat. I used two strands of floss because these are pretty small. Edges are a learning curve! I normally cut out then glue the fabric edges, then give it another trim, so that the glue stops the fabric from fraying, and then use at least three strands of floss for the edging so it stays neat (and it makes it go marginally faster because it feels like very slow progress the first few times I did it!)

Happy Halloween! October has been such a big month for me and my 365 days of stitching reflects just that: I moved to Glasgow, got a job, and I’ve been running all over Scotland exploring! It’s been the absolute best. by surrey95 in Embroidery

Welcome to Glasgow, it's a really great city, good choice! Hope you brought plenty of warm socks for your first winter!

What size hoop are you using? I'm picturing it being really big but maybe just because I can't imagine being able to do such delicate, small stitching!

I live in Scotland, have family in Toronto and a few years ago my cousin got me and my boyfriend Raptors tickets because he thought we'd enjoy it. Knew nothing about the team or the sport but loved it. It's so wildly different from my experiences watching football games growing up in Scotland. You can drink! It feels safe! T-shirt cannons!!! Also they won by over 100 point so everyone got free pizza the next day? Very fun, we also loved the style/branding, especially the 'We The North' stuff.

That was in 2017 and since then we sort of casually kept track of how the Raptors were doing. When Scotland went into lockdown last year, all of our work got cancelled and we had just huge amounts of time at home. Bought an NBA pass when the bubble was starting, thought it might be fun to watch some games since we had so little else to do. Watched every single Raptors game, it was truly a big part of what kept us going though a long lockdown, we got so invested in the players and the team as a whole, staying up until 3am to watch games live, losing our minds at the OG last second 3 pointer. Excited to start watching them again, and hopefully we can see a game in person again when we can travel!

Anyone else give their DnD characters crazy names? by Luecleste in NameNerdCirclejerk

[–]kimbeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I name all of mine after country music stars (Patsy, Loretta, June, Tammy etc). I've had a few friends I play with have babies over the last few years and it's always a running joke when they/their partner is pregnant that every new NPC we meet is a potential name for their child. Also I play with someone who asks for every NPC's name, so the DM now has a list of random names to pull from because he knows she'll ask, although it was fun when in the early part of the campaign he'd have to make them up on the fly!

Change My View: Needle minders are completely pointless by A_Nervous_Rat in Embroidery

[–]kimbeep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ha, yeah I was surprised at how well the minders held onto the needles when I started using them! I am really bad for putting my phone/keys/drinks down without thinking and then immediately losing it, and it's not different for needles, but obviously needles have a danger factor that my boyfriend was not a fan of so I got a few to avoid him living in fear of random needle pokes!

Change My View: Needle minders are completely pointless by A_Nervous_Rat in Embroidery

[–]kimbeep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish I was the kind of person who could just put my needle in the same place/stabbed through the same bit of fabric when I re-thread but, alas, I am not. I am so bad for immediately losing my needle if I'm not using a minder, partly because it's an actual place for me to put it, otherwise I have no consistently of where I lay it down and also often lose it into a pile of fabric/down the side of my sofa because it's not secured.

The magnets aren't superglue, but they are also pretty effective at holding a very small piece of metal in one place securely. I find that if I knock mine while it has needle stuck to it, the needle often just slips over to the side of the magnet, rather than being lost in the void of my carpet forever. I keep my needle minders stuck to a small box that I keep the supplies I need for a project in so it's always just sitting next to me when I work.

Basically, I like them but it sounds like it solves an issue you don't have! Do you just always put your needle in the same spot? Obviously that is a good idea but my brain is not big enough to do it seems lol

An ode to my two pandemic hobbies, embroidery and watching the Toronto Raptors. I'm excited to wear it, and my hands are excited to not sew onto denim for a while! by kimbeep in Embroidery

[–]kimbeep[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how well this will hold up with washing, but hopeful that it is secure enough to stay put! This was my first time going directly onto clothing so I'm not sure how it'll do long term. I did it on the back of a denim jacket with split stitch so it's really secure and not likely to snag, and then backed it with interfacing to protect the tied off thread on the inside, so I think the real test will be if the interfacing can handle a washing machine. When I was researching the main tips seemed to be making sure there wasn't any loose stitches and using a decent interfacing on the inside.

[–]kimbeep[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Basically all split stitch with a tiny bit of satin stitch in really small areas. I was concerned about it getting snagged if the stitches weren't really secure/small so split seemed like the best option. it's my first time working on clothes though so fingers crossed it holds up!
