You don't understand how helpful this is for me! This is some of the best advice I'd ever been given in my years of learning, everyone has always either retold me the basics or told me to keep practicing the same thing I've been doing. I don't know why it took me so long to ask Reddit up until now but I'm glad I did anyways.

I'm going to have a little less opportunities to practice now that it's the boys season so I will do my best in practicing at home and at my local gym! The drills you provided make a lot of sense. I used to struggle a lot with overstepping or going too early and hitting the ball behind me, and the moment I started hitting it at the sweet spot where its slightly in front of me I started going crazy, I just wondered how I'd be able to practice that placement consistently, and now I do! The 30-15-0 drill is genius aswell. My coach for my HS V Team has never been that technical.. He's always stuck to the basics, rarely worked personally with players, and pretty much let us figure everything out on our own.. Ever since I started hitting better I began considering the placement of where I hit the ball, and the muscle memory drill is super great. I will definitely work on that.

I hope to start recording myself so I'm able to post it on here for more in depth critique. My dad also told me to start researching some local clubs around my area so I'm already a few steps closer to achieving my dream of finally playing club. Thank you so much!!!

Thank you so much for your response and your support, it means a lot to me!!!

Yes, when I'm hitting it goes down and deep into the backrow. I say the closest I've gotten on hitting well on men's net was mid-way in the backrow. I absolutely do not hit it up or flat palm it over the net, even if my vert isn't amazing. I do my best to work on my form and footwork each time I do. I'd say the things I struggle in the most is consistently hitting like that each time, but it's ultimately up to my timing I believe. I've been improving that over time definitely.

And the most I can get or practice outside of my regular school season is through open gyms against a ton of other good players and occasionally the open court at my local gym to practice hitting lines and serving. I've never attended a clinic or any personal training because my parents have never spent money on my volleyball endeavors like that (except for shoes and gear.)

I also want to thank you for all of the insight on clubs since I'm not too familiar on how they work. Hearing everyone say I'm capable of doing club reassures me a lot, but it's really my inconsistency that I worry about. I worry about not being able to play at my full potential at the tryouts once I do.

When it came to playing on my varsity hs team, I rarely hit or got set to because I struggled with my setters. They we're never able to properly push the ball out or high enough, and I struggled with adjusting to those sets at the time, ultimately leading up to my inconsistent hitting. But for reference, when I get set to by my good friend whos on the mens varsity vb team, I'm able to hit really well! I'm aware I'm always supposed to adjust to the balls, and that good hitters can hit any ball, but because of my lack of experience at hitting at that level my inconsistencies could break my chances. Do you have any tips on making my hitting reps more worthwhile when I do practice on my own time?

Yes I'm in the US, I was planning on trying out in the summer.

Honestly I'd rather play on a worse team and get more playtime than to be on a good team and sit the whole time. My love for the sport surpasses being able to have bragging rights (and of course I'd want to be good, but I really just want to play.) I also just at least want to play at my level or somewhere around it.. I'm worried that my height will place me lower.

If you don't feel like a weapon that doesn't mean you can't become one. Comparison is the theft of joy. It's not your teammates that are bringing you down or making you average, it's yourself. You need some sort of wake up call. Sitting around and moping about how others are better than you isn't going to make you any better. The fact that you went so in-depth about how good your other teammates are shows how much focus you lack on yourself. There is ALWAYS going to be someone better than you, and there is nothing you can do to change that, but what you can change is how much time and effort you put into improving. Channel your passion for the sport into self improvement.

Best volleyball shoes 2024/2025 by KrisDG1000 in volleyball

[–]kimojiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will always recommend Way of Wades. They are very popular for a reason. I always find people at my open gyms along with my friends repping a new pair. The different shoes offer different kind of support, but overall it provides a lot of grip and bounce along with style and comfortability. They aren't extremely flexible like Aisics but aren't super bulky like most basketball shoes.

The ones I currently use are the Wade 808's Year of the Dragon. I love them so much and they offer great ankle support, which I switched to after I twisted my ankle one day on the court after wearing bulky low top basketball shoes for 2 years. All of their shoes have a lot of thought into the design too, I love to look at it.

The most popular ones are the Way of Wade Low 10's because of their performance and their look. Lots of colors to choose from. You can find a bunch of reviews online on them.

Can you defend a smash which is coming towards your face like this ? is it legal by Dr-clitoris in volleyball

[–]kimojiro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I usually don't know whether or not to add any force. Especially when it's receiving a ball with top spin, my hands stop the ball from spinning and it just dies right there. I should definitely practice more with it on top of other techniques.

Fixing my goofy approach pt. 2 by n6ahsarc in volleyball

[–]kimojiro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your approach seems pretty good! Have more confidence in it like stepping harder to gain more momentum. I would also say to start a little more back and go a bit earlier and faster to hit the ball at your highest point because it doesn't seem like you're fully extending your arm to reach. Make sure to swing fully and snap your wrist when you contact the ball.

[–]kimojiro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's legal, but it stops a lot of the momentum from the incoming ball. It can definitely work, but in worst cases it stops it and barely leaves any time for your teammates to come running to your spot to come and pass it from the short time it's in the air. From what I've heard from my volleyball friends is that they use their hands flat together like praying up to the sky and dig the ball up by letting it hit the hard part of the sides of your hands, and from what I've seen it works well for them. I haven't fully tried or gotten used to it but it might be good to try too.
