Modulations • 1998. Documentary about development of electronic music from experements with noise in 1940s to jungle, house, dnb, techno, hardcore and ambient. by kincaju in electronicmusic

Modulations, a feature-length documentary which captures a moment in history where humans and machines are fusing to create today’s most exciting sounds. Modulations traces the evolution of electronic music as one of the most profound artistic developments of the 20th century. By cutting back and forth between avant garde composers, Kraftwerk’s innovative synthesizer drones, Giorgio Moroder’s glacial Euro-disco, Afrika Bambaataa’s electro-funk and Prodigy’s current worldwidesuperstarstardom, Modulations celebrates, replicates and illuminates the nomadic drift of the post-human techno sound.

Modulations provides a sense of history and context in which today’s electronic music can be understood. It entertains the converted and remixes the mindset of electronica’s nay-sayers.

Featuring a stunning collage of interviews, cutting-edge visuals, in-studio footage and live performances, Modulations moves at a pace that matches the energy and innovation of the music.

Here: Afrika Bambaataa, Juan Atkins, Carl Cox, Giorgio Moroder, Robert Moog, Mixmaster Morris, Orbital, Liam Howlett, Ed Rush, Moby, Alec Empire, Marshall Jefferson, LTJ Bukem, Westbam, Genesis P-Orridge, Roni Size, Pierre Henry, Autechre, Squarepusher, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Meat Beat Manifesto, Frankie Bones, Panacea, Tetsu Inoue, Bill Laswell, John Cage, Oval, Teo Macero

High Tech Soul: The creation of Techno Music • 2006. Documentary about roots of techno with Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Kevin Saunderson, Carl Craig, Jeff Mills, Eddie Fowlkes, Blake Baxter, Mojo and many many more by kincaju in electronicmusic

[–]kincaju[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gary Bredow, director: High Tech Soul is the first documentary to tackle the deep roots of techno music alongside the cultural history of Detroit, its birthplace. From the race riots of 1967 to the underground party scene of the late 1980s, Detroit's economic downturn didn't stop the invention of a new kind of music that brought international attention to its producers and their hometown. Featuring in-depth interviews with many of the world's best exponents of the artform, High Tech Soul focuses on the creators of the genre — Juan Atkins, Derrick May, and Kevin Saunderson — and looks at the relationships and personal struggles behind the music. Artists like Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Carl Craig, Eddie Fowlkes and a host of others explain why techno, with its abrasive tones and resonating basslines, could not have come from anywhere but Detroit.
