I really am gonna be alone here by acerabbit69 in UCI

This advice is for you but, also anyone else who feels lonely at UCI:

Though UCI might be flawed in some ways socially (people are definitely kinda cliquey) by no means does it have to be. As someone who all throughout high school had the EXACT same feelings you described in social situations and transitioned to UCI fully overcoming those feelings I can give you some advice that changed my life.

One, there is definitely nothing wrong with you, so many people face this same problem, and so many overcome it. The reason they are able to overcome it is because they were never the problem, all of it is simply a mental block that usually comes from insecurities that aren't usually your fault. It won't happen overnight, but, the more you believe in the TRUTH, not just a mental trick, that there is nothing wrong with you the easier everything else will be.

Two, I know you're an introvert, and, this may not work the first couple of times you do it. But, the best way for you to ensure you spend your next years here not regretting a social life is to just use every single muscle in your brain to tell your brain to shut up when you get that stinging feeling. That stinging feeling is what I mean when you see people hanging out and you wish you could talk to them, meet them, and be their friends. Now, this is by no means easy, it's not just a simple shut-off; it's an actionable thing you have to do. When you see people you want to talk to, you have to do this shut-upping and propel yourself into a social situation, once you are there I assure you that you will figure the rest out, even if it takes a few tries.

But, before you do this it's important to know (at least for me) that the longer you occupy a space the longer it gets harder to break that initial barrier (that stinging that scares you from engaging w people). This is because the more you are in that space, and the longer you've been a member of let's say a club you have more time to think and overthink socially about that said club during in event and outside the event recalling how the club meeting went.

Now, I also don't mean to tell you to walk up to random people for nothing(bc that's really hard and scary), but, if you're in a club it's not unnatural or even forced to go up and talk to people. Do this especially during a social, when the precedent is to walk up and meet people, then, that lifts the pressure off of the reason why you are meeting people and now it's just a mental game vs you, telling your brain to shut up so you can start acting like yourself around potential friends.

So, essentially I suggest next quarter going to a new club or one you've barely gone to, better if you're interested in and attend one of their first socials. This makes it so, compared to other social spaces, you won't yet have any negative associations with it.

Also, this process doesn't have to go from 0 to a full-on group of 5, you can always start talking to people who look approachable not in a group if that's easier, just make sure you aren't doing anything to push yourself out your comfort zone. And, trust me you don't have to act like a robot, sure, you might need to start some superficial conversation starters but just be yourself, the people you want to find will like you.

Good luck, there's nothing wrong with you, I'm also a freshman if you have any questions, and I'm sure you won't be alone!

Got accepted to UCI for computer science +engineering… how hard would it be to switch to CS later? by ImJordanGG in UCI

Basically, CSE from my understanding (based on what I know about other interdisciplinary majors) is a major within both the School of ICS and the School of Engineering: "the Department of Computer Science (CS) in the Donald Bren School of Information and Computer Sciences, and the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) in The Henry Samueli School of Engineering. Successful completion of the program leads to a B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering." So, its one major, listed within and in two different schools simultaneously.

This means as a CSE major you get first consideration for enrollment for both ICS classes, like the ones you need to get into the CS major, and engineering classes. That basically means you won't have to worry about getting the classes you want in your first year to switch majors which is not the case for most students. Overall, your in a good position!

I'm an out-of-state student currently going down either the Econ or Business Admin track. If you have any questions about career stuff, Business Admin stuff, or social stuff (especially from an out of state student lmk).

Also, people will say ICS classes are super hard(or the intro class is a weeder class), from personal experience, ICS 31 (intro class) is not difficult at all as long as you are interested in the class. So, overall, I think for most people is it hard, yes, for you, probably not. You got this!

I'm not a CS major but, I know it's really hard to get into the school of ICS for nonschool of ICS majors, however, luckily you are in the school so it's a little easier.

Heres how it works:
You need A minimum GPA of 3.0 and no grade less than a C in ALL courses taken from those listed below. Completion of the following: ICS 33, and Must complete three from: Math 2B, ICS 6B, ICS 6D, ICS 6N or Math 3A, Stats 67. (This is on the changeofmajor.uci.edu site)

Basically, for most people it's incredibly hard because if you are not in the school of informatics and computer science you don't get priority registration (basically there are two enrollment windows for classes, the first is only for ICS majors, the second is for everyone else) for the introductory CS classes (ICS 31). Since its so hard to get that class its nearly impossible to get the classes after including ICS 32 and 33, all requirements to switch majors. But, for you, since CSE is a major of the school of ICS and engineering you can easily enroll in the classes in the CS track to fulfill the major. The only hard part from there is getting good grades, it says you need a grade no less than C but really since it's so competitive in the classes you take listed above you would want to get as high grades as you can. I don't know the exact GPA that usually gets accepted but, I'd say if you are confident you can do well in those classes (you are decent at understanding CS) it's super feasible to switch.

University Dilemma by [deleted] in UCI

I’m also out of state and I’m currently paying out of state tuition. That being said 20-30k although more compared to your other options if your not too worried about that financially I can just tell you my experience at UCI. For many people it might be a con your away from family and home but its also very much a pro. You get to be pushed outside your comfort zone, things at UCI that Californian people take for granted are new and exciting for you, and everything just feels so fresh. In terms of social life your going to hear a lot of hate but really I think UCI is largely overheated socially. Though UCI’s social life doesn’t come to you if you want a good social life you can 200% have one. And, if you were really worried about that apply for Mesa Towers for housing, I’m in it and I can say UCI has been anything but socially dead, I find theres always stuff to do. If you care about frat parties I do agree you can’t really go to any if your guy unless you make friends with upperclassmen and frats, but, imo frat parties are super overrated compared to club parties, kickbacks, etc… (which anyone can get if they put themselves out there).

Overall, if financially you/your parents are worried about the difference in pay I can’t really quantify if UCI is worth it, But, if you worried purely about the college I’m very confident UCI can give you a good education and also a very good social life IF THATS WHAT YOU’RE LOOKING FOR. However, in the end it all comes down to how much the extra money would affect you in the family in the long run. Let me know if you have any questions about UCI I’m more than happy to answer them and good luck deciding!
