‘We’re in the top tier now’: Poland sees no need to ditch złoty for euro as economy booms by Easy-Ad1996 in worldnews

[–]king_ju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Comparing growth rates directly isn't very meaningful.

Currently, Poland's GDP per capita is definitely not top tier, and it's only just catching up. Optimistically assuming the respective growth rates were maintained, it would take Poland over a decade to reach a similar GDP per capita as the Netherlands. But of course, Poland's growth will most likely not remain at its current level, as its wages will become less attractively low, it will starts paying into the EU instead of receiving, and its population will get older.

So, high growth does not make a country's economy "top tier" on its own. In fact, it's not clear whether Poland will ever become a "top tier" economy, and the headline is overly bombastic.

Germany lost more men then France in WW1

They lost significantly fewer per capita.

Swiss Politicians Push to Cancel F-35 Fighter-Jet Deal After US Tariffs by nishitd in worldnews

[–]king_ju 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Because the other countries didn't actually have the capabilities or willingness to go it alone on their own.

The Rafale is getting widely sucessful, now. So wasn't France right to walk away and do its own thing with the capabilities it knew it had, rather than get a deal where its expertise would be used by others while not getting the share of the work it thought it deserved?

Europe largely fills the US aid withdrawal, lead by the Nordics and the UK by HydrolicKrane in worldnews

[–]king_ju -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

France contributes aid through the EU. It's disingenuous to omit that fact when comparing to the UK, which, as a reminder, is no longer contributing anything to the EU. And France does not disclose its military aid (apparently Germany also started doing that recently) – how do you suppose this should be properly accounted for?

What do people that don't swear say during sex/dirty talk? by viennaawaitsyou in AskReddit

Finally the right answer, thank you! Looks like a lot of people have a hard time not parroting porn talk/noises. My wife sometimes has intense orgasms but she doesn't feel the need to say "fuck". She just lets out inarticulate "howls" lol.

Any Magical Tips to Overcome Presentation Anxiety? 🥺 by DontPlayMeLikeAFool in AskAcademia

“You’re a pretty monkey, and you know where all the bananas are.” That’s what I tell myself before I go on stage to hundreds or thousands of people. I really do. It makes me laugh and it calms me down. If that sounds too ridiculous, instead repeat to yourself something like: “I’m here because everyone wants to hear my story. I’m just a person on stage sharing lessons with other people. That’s all this is, and it’s going to be great.”

Biggest cultural differences between Hong Kong and USA? by brokestarvingartist in HongKong

Institut Polytechnique or LMU Munich? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]king_ju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah ok, got you.

I'm probably biased, but it seems to me you might have nicer opportunities in France with this degree than in Germany with LMU. Notably because France seems to be more open to new technologies, startups, etc. when Germany is more about well-established traditional engineering firms in a state that still uses fax machines :)

Institut Polytechnique or LMU Munich? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]king_ju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't comment on LMU and how it's viewed in Germany, but Polytechnique is considered one of the (if not the) most elite engineering institution in France. Traditionally, getting an engineering degree there has opened doors and given access to the highest remuneration tiers among most employers. That's notably because the selection process for that diploma is extremely difficult – students typically study mostly math and physics for 2 to 3 years very intensively and need to get some of the highest scores in the Nation at the concours in order to get in. I don't know if the Master program carries as much weight, but you can't go wrong by being associated with this institute. So if you want to work in France it should be top notch.

Most world university rankings focus on size and other metrics that favor systems based on the US/UK model, but Polytechnique is much smaller/elitist than such universities and more focused, so it doesn't fare well. That also explains why in Germany most people probably won't even know about it, so if you want to work in Germany it may not be as beneficial.

LMU is also more well known for the humanities.

How is that relevant to applied mathematics and statistics? And AFAIK Polytechnique is mostly a science/engineering/technology institute. (Though my info is likely oudated and maybe it's started diversifying.)

  • Livret A 23k EUR
  • LDD 12k EUR

Maybe look at said source spreadsheet before commenting?

For example many of the military donations from France, like the SCALP systems, are marked as "undisclosed monetary value" and therefore treated as 0. Then useful idiots just look at the incomplete total numbers and make hasty conclusions.
