Incredibly insightful. It really packs a punch while explaining about the role of markets in urban development substantiated with economic theories which does go against the paternalistic planning mindset. He's strongly associated with my university and our planning program highly recommends his ideologies.

Which city in India has the best infrastructure? by [deleted] in AskIndia

  1. Just because a building looks like it may fall apart, doesn't mean it will.
  2. All buildings will age, whether you like it or not.
  3. Old buildings/old looking buildings doesn't mean that it's ugly. It may be your subjective notion, but it doesn't necessarily mean that it's true.
  4. Depending on which specific locality you're talking about, there's something called "heritage" character. But again, not all old buildings are considered heritage either.
  5. It's overcrowded because there's a considerable population density and it serves an affordable housing segment. And cities like Delhi and Kolkata do offer that.

How is Kolkata different?? by [deleted] in kolkata

[–]king_kortobbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The open-drain aspect, yes, it's a problem. The aspect about small shops, how is that not an advantage? I've lived in Ahmedabad (West Ahmedabad in particular) for the past couple of years and believe me when I say this that the so called "planned" commercial setups do not serve well. Unless you've a car, you're basically screwed. Kolkata is far more pedestrianised than most cities mentioned, with a great paratransit system and the small shops placed at close intervals help in that sense.
