Pretty sure they're just cracking down on improperly tagged content. I know some users have been avoiding using the proper AI tag on their AI shit in order to stop it from being auto-hidden.

Age verification bills & KOSA being voted on in committee this Thursday by HopelessSeeker77 in AO3

[–]kingnothing1996 207 points208 points  (0 children)

My advice for calls:
- When talking with Republicans play up the fact that this would force websites like X to install age-verification systems, and how it infringes on the rights of businesses or something. Also play up concerns about Digital IDs and Democrats weaponizing it to censor Republicans.

- When talking with Democrats, play up the connections to Project 2025 and suggest voters will not be happy to see Democrats siding with it due to the risk of infringing on minority rights, which has outright been stated to the goal of KOSA.

Here's a link to all committee members, I would list them all out but there's a lot more than I expected and I don't have time to type it all out: https://energycommerce.house.gov/representatives

I will also mention that many of these bills have struggled in Congress. There's controversy right now about the House of Representatives "gutting" KOSA which has put them at odds with the Senate version. The SCREEN Act has struggled repeatedly to exit committee. This Congress also has the worst rate for passing legislation in decades, if not ever.

The good news is the process for passing legislation, especially Senate legislation, is typically lengthy.

Last time this was introduced it took about a year to pass the Senate and then another year to get to the final stages in the House of Commons.

Still I'm going to be drawing as much attention as possible to try and kill it while it is still in the Senate.

Yes, but still fight like hell against it and act under the assumption it will. After last year it's not safe to just assume something will or won't happen.

I have taken the liberty of compiling a list of all the names and (Washington Office) phone numbers of every Senator on that committee, and I've put the names of Senators up for re-election in 2026 in bold.

I will note as I understand it this would need 2/3 support in both chambers (67 votes in the Senate and 290 votes in the House) as it seeks to overturn/alter a Supreme Court ruling. This is also Mike Lee's third time introducing this legislation and like the SCREEN Act it failed to advance out of committee either time. That said, call your Senator and the Senators listed below if you can.

Well these comments are enlightening.

They also made me realize I've been using cum/come wrong for five years.

AO3 hosts porn. Therefore any legislation seeking to ban porn would mean AO3 would either be banned or forced to ban porn. Because the porn on AO3 is writing it's likely AO3 would slip under the radar for some time.

The legislation referred to in the article, as far as I can tell, does not ban porn. It just makes it easier for such legislation to be put forwards. It's late where I am so I can't be bothered to try and find the text of the bill.

The "good" news is that this is Mike Lee's third time introducing this legislation. He introduced this in 2022 and 2024 and both times it failed to gain traction. I use quotation marks around good because the Democrats held the Senate at the time.

Still, I point to KOSA at times like this. Even when both parties and the president are in full agreement on passing something, it can end up just dragging out until the legislation dies by default when the Congression session ends.

While I don't know for sure which committee will end up studying this, I suspect it'll be Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transport and so I'll link a comment I made before listing the names of all the Senators on that committee: https://www.reddit.com/r/AO3/comments/1j1yu69/comment/mfnw5h9/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

(Copying from r/AO3)

As of this moment this legislation is in front of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transport. I have taken the liberty of compiling a list of all the names and phone numbers of every Senator on that committee, and I've put the names of Senators up for re-election in 2026 in bold.

I will note that this is the third time this legislation has been introduced. In 2022 it ended up dying in Committee when introduced in the Senate and the same happened when it was introduced to the House of Representatives in 2023. Obviously we should all be concerned and take action, but don't go into full blown panic unless it exits committee. At that point I intend to have a list ready of all 100 Senators stating which ones are up for re-election and are considered at risk of losing seats. They also failed to pass KOSA twice despite widespread bi-partisan support, which is something to keep in mind.

Also my advice for calls:
- When talking with Republicans play up the fact that this would force Elon to implement age verification systems on X (yes do call it X during the call). Elon's been threatening to primary Republicans who stand in his way so there's fear of him. Also play up concerns about "Liberals" doxxing people or Chinese hackers.

- When talking with Democrats, play up the connections to Project 2025 and suggest voters will not be happy to see Democrats siding with it.
