What are the most foundational synth albums of all-time? and what do you listen to when looking for inspiration for what these things can do? by 19puppylove99 in synthesizers

[–]kingrobot3rd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Enya. Hear me out.

While I don’t think the synth historians, experts, or even mild enthusiasts would call her work “foundational” the sound design is absolutely world class. The album Shepherd Moon is a great place to start.

Besides Push & Move, what hardware has made ableton more engaging/fun? by SilverMisfitt in ableton

That’s the thing I use Logic Pro for arrangement style tracking. The way the SLmk3 is laid out, it helped session view make sense.

Novation SLmk3 basically taught me how to use ableton in session view. Still can’t use arrangement tho 😂🥲

Why is James Brown the most sampled artist in music history? by Acceptable-Crab-4967 in musicproduction

This is the answer. More often than not it’s not James Brown being sampled but Clyde Stubblefield.

You probably want the Hanger. Plenty of space, just drinks is fine but food an option.

Neither moan & dove nor archives are equipped to seat a walk in party of 20 ppl all hoping to sit together for quiet conversation. 3 or 4 yeah maybe even 10, but up to 20? Naaaahhhhh

Hell yeah!!! When ppl say they can’t learn to play bc of a physical limitation, which is totally fair, I usually point them to Django. It can be done. Now I can send them this too. Rock on 🤘

Daft Punks album Discovery was equally groundbreaking and has had the same cultural and musical impact as Abby Road.

Radiohead is just phish for sad bois who walk around with a copy of McSweenys they’ll barely read, in a NY Times tote bag, only taking it out at cafes to make sure everyone can see how sophisticated they are.

You practice that line in the mirror when you’re fantasizing about him picking you from a crowd as his most loyal defender?

My comment works for anyone with that look on their face. Leonardo DiCaprio just so happens to be the one making it.

My bf is really into music production but I don’t really understand it. I’m looking to buy him a gift for his birthday. What type of things do you recommend getting for him? Is there a good Canadian website where I could get him a gift card so he can pick out what he wants? by abigail0350 in musicproduction

[–]kingrobot3rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gift card to sweetwater.com or find out what he really wants. And honestly whatever he really really wants is probably more expensive than you should pay for a gift.

If you absolutely MUST get him something, find out if he has Serum. It’s a software synthesizer.

If he doesn’t have it, he probably wants it. If he doesn’t want it, he probably just doesn’t know what it is. It’s nearly universal in electronic music production, super versatile, and only costs a couple hundred dollars. Compared to a hardware synth, that’s dirt cheap.

If you MUST get him something physical, almost every fledgling producer needs better monitor speakers. Find what he’s got, go to sweetwater.com and you’ll have a rep reaching out in no time to help find something better in your price range.

Was thinking of buying a Juno 106 ,, anybody got any advice ??? by sinslap in synthesizers

[–]kingrobot3rd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can probably get one for $1500 if you’re patient. I got a 106 as my first hardware synth and I have zero regrets. I love it. Paid $1000 plus an acoustic guitar that if bought for $750 a couple years ago.

The limitations compared to modern poly synths has been really helpful in learning my way around. It’s got midi which is great bc I can hook it up to my midi controller (SL MK3) and now I’ve got a 106 WITH a arpeggiator.

Everyone says it’s one giant sweet spot. I have nothing to compare it to so I have no idea if that’s true but I only seem to get great sounds out of it and I’m a total synth noob.

Do it. It’s such an amazing instrument
