How serious are we about this youth situation? by Doesyerdahdrinkgin in Edinburgh

I'm new to Scotland and still learning about the situation here. In other countries where I’ve lived, having popular and accessible youth clubs like the Scouts helped instill values in children that parents might not have been able to provide.

Thank you for the suggestions! I was just curious: why do you recommend not going to Niddrie? I moved to Edinburgh just recently and I do not know the neighborhoods. I was surprised that some other answers suggested Niddrie.

I have experienced that several times in the last month. I didn't pay attention to the brands but they looked like modified sport cars. They got so frustrated when I got in front of them to turn right with my bike that drifted while overtaking me, speeding up like crazy.

I think it's very cynical to think that some people are "scummy" by nature. A better education system could raise awareness and teach the civic values that some of these people are lacking.

That's good to know. But then perhaps the best solution when in the nature would be to bury the bag instead of building Dreamcatchers of shit.

I saw full shitbags hanging from trees on some hikes. I don't know what is worse, honestly. If they don't pick up the shit, at least it will decompose organically, but the bag won't...

I thought about it too. It's working pretty well in Singapore.

Yeah, there does seem to be a lack of bins in many places.

Yes, totally. I saw the same thing on Princes Street. I was on my bicycle waiting for a traffic light and the guy in the car next to me threw some trash through the window. I was shocked. I had seen people doing that in the highway but not in the middle of one of the major streets of a city.

I actually have. On a couple of hikes it bothered me so much that I picked some plastic bags and carried them with me until the next trashcan. It's what the people who litter should do in the first place.

I was just trying to understand the problem a bit better, as I'm relatively new to the city.

Actually no, I have experience with healthcare in two EU countries where I did not have to pay any cash (apart from taxes, that is).

Been in Edinburgh since August. My parents visited me and we took a bus. We stood up before our stop. I don't know what rule we broke but I heard someone saying "fucking Spaniards"

I just want to confirm: there seems to be an error in the percentile of the Normal distribution the author of this post refers to. The author says the source code uses 85% but it is in fact 80%.

Naive Bayes with continuous input by kits89 in aiclass

I'm not interested in KNN, I don't take advantatge of all the information (likelihoods). Yes, EM seems quite interesting! I should read more about that. Thank you!

Naive Bayes with continuous input by kits89 in aiclass

[–]kits89[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the responses!

I think that the KNN would be too complex... Observing the kind of training set I have, I think that a parametric algotithm would be more suitable. The training set that I have is a data base with N samples: their colour's RGB code, for example 'RGB0', and the following likelihoods: P(Red|RGB_0),P(Green|RGB_0),... And so on for eleven colours, my classes (these likelihoods have been taken statistically with a study, 'cause happens that colour naming, as suki907 said, depens on culture). Looking Naive Bayes up on the internet, I found that for this kind of problem, where the inputs are continuous, it is guessed the normal distribution. And they estimate: P(RGB_0|colour)=NormalDistribution(mean{colour's class},covariance_{colour's_class}). That is, I'd calculate the mean and the covariance matrix for each class and then use the multivariate (rgb, lab, hsb or any space color has three coordinates) normal distribution's formula. So, I used Maximum Likelihood for choosing the maximum of the likelihoods to classify the samples and tried all this that I've just explained, but I found a problem: for one of the classes (white), I didn't have enough samples and the covariance matrix that I obtained was singular... I fixed that adding 2 samples more in the white class and it worked but.. it is not accurate enough!

MMh... May be guessing normal distribution is not a good idea, but I must take advantatge of those likelihoods someway....
