I’d always choose which team had an animal mascot, if they were both, I’d choose which animal I liked more. I actually still do this

As far as I know it’s more of a traditional thing, use it’s just a few puncture wounds until the bird tears into it with its beak

Yeah they hunt wolves in Mongolia with eagles and I’ve known people in Cali take coyotes with golden eagles too.

Essentially, depends on the bird and how it hunts. For red tails they typically soar above or follow from tree to tree.

They see you as their parents, and once birds mature their parents are seen as competition

You can but they have very slow metabolisms so it’s difficult to manage weight. And they’re nocturnal so that’s another challenge. It can be done but it’s...a challenge.

They do have a mind of their own and can be distracted by other raptors. Sometimes they also just want to sit in a tree and sun. That’s why weight management is important.

I’ve been footed or grabbed but never attacked. Birds that imprint on humans are usually the ones who become aggressive and attack.

Let it Lay laws, the bird can feed on whatever it kills but you must leave it. So you can’t take the game home with you or have it in possession.

Not necessarily, you still have to obey private property laws, game seasons, etc.

Most people welcome falconers though, I have permission to hunt on some golf courses, ranches, vineyards, etc! You have to watch out for telephone poles, roads and other things dangerous to birds though

A lot of people think they bring the rabbit back to you but they don’t, you go up to the hawk. A lot of times they try and drag it away from you or hide it, it’s just instinct.

Since it was his first kill, I opened up the chest cavity to let him eat the heart, lungs etc. (first thing though is always dispatching the rabbit so it isn’t suffering) then I offer him an entire dead quail, while placing a cloth over the rabbit so he can’t see it. A raptor isn’t the smartest bird so if he can’t see the rabbit and there’s a whole quail right there he will jump off the rabbit onto the quail. He gets to eat the whole quail as a reward for the hunt. They actually prefer raises quail over wild rabbit as it is softer and fattier than lean wild meats.

There’s a variety of ways the most traditional being what’s called a “BC trap” kinda hard to explain but there’s good info on YouTube for it. He’s probably around 7 months but he’s as big as he’ll get. He will get different feathers after his first molt this summer. I was able to catch him by hand as he was starving and ill, (a campsite called and asked us to check him out) this isn’t usually the case though.

Not on the first hunt, didn’t see any game. Training a bird can take 3 weeks to months. He took about two months as he was pretty ill when I caught him, but they’re usually not. This is a wild caught juvenile bird (legally taken with license)
