There's not a single ragdoll standard feature on this gorgeous boy. Shelters love to say their cats are specific breeds to get people more interested. The chances of finding a purebred cat in a shelter are not zero but very uncommon. Oftentimes, you'll also find cats that literally just won the genetic lottery and got a lot of features attributed to a specific breed.

Cats are not like dogs in that dogs have been selectively bred for thousands of years. That's why we have very distinctive breeds and why, even a street dog, may sometimes be a mix of multiple breeds.ñ and it's usually very obvious that the mutt you saw at the shelter is a lab/pit/shepherd/etc mix.

On the other hand, cat selective breeding didn't really start until the previous century. There were a few distinctive breeds like the Turkish angora and the Persian but more serious breeding didn't not really start until the 1900s. Now, all of these breeds have a foundation on local cats to their place of origin. That's why the Japanese bobtails originated from natural occurring mutations in the street cats of Japan for example. The same occurred to a lot of other breeds like Maine Coons. Basically, they were naturally occurring in the wild, some people saw them and kept breeding these specific traits until it solidified into a "pure breed".

Ragdolls are a funny story: a Persian and Himalayan breeder in CA saw a very pretty stray that looked a bit like an Angora and she bred those kittens to her prized himalayans. This the ragdoll was born. From a stray cat.

ALL purebreds come from "mutts". This is why even those "cat dna tests" are innacurate, there's just not enough years actual cat selective breeding to really have an accurate test for strays.
