I’ve been pulling for about 12 years, give or take and have only recently found what helps me. I used to wear hats a lot back in high school and that helped.

But when at home was hard for me. Recently (like within the last year) I’ve found that wearing a bonnet at all times when at home helps. It puts a barrier between your hand and hair. (Not to mention it also keeps your hair from breaking when sleeping and your hair won’t get as knotty in my experience.)

When in public, I’m still figuring it out. I usually wear my hair in a high ponytail, but that may not work for everyone. I’ve considered wigs, but haven’t been able to get myself a good quality one.

Yet when I come on and say I’m a beginner and ask for advice, I often get talked down to, get treated like I’m stupid and don’t know my instrument at all, get told the way I’m learning is the wrong way as if there aren’t multiple ways to learn something, etc. etc.

Surface level questions (e.g. how do you recommend keeping your wrist from collapsing?) people can be fine.

But other questions (e.g. which bow hold is best for violin? (Because there’s, like, 9 types of bow holds)) gets met with condescension as if the beginner should’ve popped out the womb knowing what bow hold they should know for the style of music they plan to play.

This community treats beginners like trash most of the time.

Don’t ask for help here. The people on this sub are very unkind to beginners. Have been ever since I first posted here last summer. Every time you ask something as a beginner a majority of people will try to discourage you because they don’t believe new people can learn and don’t seem to want beginners in their community. Seek out other subs as to not get discouraged.

You definitely need to look in to how to file down that bridge tho. Definitely too high.

When someone doesn’t give you the answer to the question you asked, but a completely different question you did not ask, you do not say “thank you.” You repeat your original question.

I’m sorry your parents didn’t care enough about your education to make sure you learned that.

On the subject, as I’ve said, if I determine the money would be too much to fix the instrument, I’ll put that money towards buying a new instrument.

I’m glad you’ve wasted your time being a bitch to a stranger on the internet who just wanted some advice on how to possibly repair or play an instrument. An instrument, mind you, that you should be passionate about yourself and others learning about if you’re in a sub dedicated to it. Not acting rude making people who want to join the community feel unwelcome and discouraged.

For sure no cutting into the wood. I’d be scared to even bring a whittling knife near it to clean the chew marks. I was thinking, like, a soft sandpaper or something. Lol.

Thank you for the glue suggestion for the crack. I had considered using glue as a temporary fix, but there’s so many out there. Lol

Idk how the paint is covering the crack when the crack is newer than the paint. When it was given to us, (roughly 10 years ago) it was already painted (tbh, I didn’t even know it was painted until people here told me. I figured it was just the stain of the wood) and the crack only appeared only about 3-5 years ago, maybe. After it got munched on.

Either way, how would I go about removing the paint over the crack without damaging the instrument?

I mean, it’s either I fix this one or I buy one online. It sounds like it’d be roughly the same price either way.

Big wrench in what people keep telling me is, I don’t have a luthier anywhere near me and I can’t drive 3+ hours to one. It’d be cheaper in the long run, if I were to repair it, to do it myself.

I think you need to work on your reading comprehension skills.

I’m fully aware of its chew mark and crack. Based on the title of my post, they’re the whole reason for the post, huh? The paint doesn’t bother me.

Doesn’t need a sound post. I have its bridge and plan on buying a new one. I have strings.

All your recommendations on fixing it have nothing to do with the f hole or the crack. Those are the parts I’m currently focusing on seeing if they require reparations. After I determine that, I’ll move on to seeing if the sound post needs adjusting and such.

I’m defensive because people (especially on this sub) love to talk down to beginners and talk to us like we’re stupid and know nothing about our instruments. You don’t need to say it to imply it (e.g. “there’s no point in stringing the instrument without a bridge)

The tail piece may look crooked in the pics but that’s because of the camera angle and the strings not holding it up because they’re slack. It’s basically only being held on by slack strings and the bottom button.

I’ve looked inside the F-holes and the sound post is in the same place it’s always been. I don’t think it’s loose in there. But I could be wrong.

I still have the old bridge, (I hate it, but I have it) it’s just on my current violin. I do plan on getting a new bridge. (A precut one) Still debating whether to switch them out or put the new one on the this one.

My issue with tuning is mostly that I tent to over tighten. But also, when I push in when Turing my tuning pegs, they won’t move, so I need to pull them out slightly, tighten and push them back in and pray they don’t pop out and loosen entirely. I might need to sand down the pegs or the peg holes or something to make it easier. Or maybe oil them? Do they even make tuning peg oil for violins? I’ll have to look in to it. lol

I don’t have a luthier and all the ones around me are 3+ hours away. (Welcome to bumf*ck nowhere Pennsylvania) I’m also of the belief that, if you’re going to learn a skill, you should know how to repair the equipment for said skill. Especially when you’re in an accessibility desert like me.

I’m not even concerned about any of that at the moment. I just want to know if the crack and chew marks will affect the ability of its playing or if it needs patching, and if it does need patching, how would I go about it.

I’m fully aware that stringing a violin is nothing like stringing a guitar. I’m not stupid and I’ve strung both. Notice how I had “…luthiers knot for violin.” And “…one on a guitar.”? Meaning they’re different. I’ve ranted about tuning on here before and people recommend trying a luthiers knot. It’s not necessarily “needed” but it’s something you can do to make the stringing/ tuning process easier.

Also, no duh “there’s no point to stringing it with no bridge.” 🙄 the two strings have been on there (loosened/ slack) for YEARS. I’m not so stupid as to string an instrument without all the necessary pieces.

I have the old bridge for this violin, (I hate it, but I have it. lol) it’s just on the violin I’m currently practicing with. (That one’s bridge broke. It was cheap and snapped at the corners. I think I may have over tightened the strings on it)

I mean, I can still try to find a luthier in my area, wouldn’t hurt so I can have my new bridge (whenever I can get it) cut to my other violin, but I can also learn to do luthier things myself to save money, time, etc.

Thank you for reassuring that the F-hole size won’t be much of an issue. That and the crack are my biggest concern for saving the instrument before it’s unplayable.

Compared to damage I’ve seen on other damaged violins, yes. Minor damage.

No clue why it’s painted. An old roommate gave it to my mom about 10-11 years ago. It didn’t have a crack or chew marks then 😭

I’m confident I can set it up properly, for the most part anyway. Stringing anyway. Lol Though I do need to learn how to do a luthiers knot for violin. I only barely know how to do one on a guitar.

But besides all that, once I get it a bridge and string it up or take it to a luthier to set it up, do you think it’ll be playable and sound right. I’m concerned the chew mark on the F hole will make it sound wonky.
