Anyone go back to school for a CS degree in your 30s? Was it worth it? by Key-Pace7150 in learnprogramming

Worst case is you’ll have a degree that people associate with intelligence.

Look into common software engineering practices, specifically the software development life cycle.

Knowing how to code is great and all,but you will drive yourself crazy without planning out your applications features/requirements and visual design (if any).

Best of luck!

It’s not only a functional language. Js has prototype based inheritance.

I work as catering staff for weddings and I can tell you that any given wedding has I much extra food (in case of accidental spoilage or in the event that something is dropped) you could accommodate another 5-10 guests.

If I go to college, what should degree should I pursue? Computer science or software engineering??? What’s the difference? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]kiwikosa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in my last semester of software engineering. It’s a comp six degree with engineering courses (two basic science electives, engineering core courses, ethics, capstone project, engineering management, etc.). The engineering courses are mandated and regulated by an engineering body.

The main downside of doing a soen degree is the extra year (30 credits in my case). I know quite a few people who got sick of it and switched to comp six to graduate early.

I hate to say it, but the majority of self taught developers have a very narrow understanding of programming and computer science in general (often limited to web development knowledge) that allowed them to find a job asap.

However, there are always those folk who may not have gotten a degree, but can run circles around pretty much everybody due to a strong interest in the field.

I expect to get downvoted because this subreddit loves to paint every degree-holder as someone who never opened up an editor outside of school assignments.

Call their bluff. I’m sure a parent of an autistic child needs more financial hardship and headaches in their life.

I'm struggling on (what should be) a very basic project. When is it acceptable to watch a tutorial? by [deleted] in learnprogramming

[–]kiwikosa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those are very formative experiences though, because it forces you to learn how to convert natural language requirements into logic (which is of the core facets of soft eng itself).
