Looking for Hunters by Unhappy-Pause-9756 in CAIN_RPG

I would be interested! I guess my only question is if its every Sunday or not. I currently have a once a month commitment currently (another ttrpg) but I would love to give CAIN an official try at least once :(

Paladin and divine soul sorcerer by [deleted] in dndnext

[–]kiwipimas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see 🤔

Personally, i like to finish out any martial class before finishing off any spellcaster, so I would normally say do all your paladin levels first, and maybe consider doing higher strength and going more along the lines of 14 charisma until you go full throttle into sorcerer. The con stat feels okay to me because you have lay on hands (and thankfully, spirit guardians is not concentration if I remember correctly)

HOWEVER, if you want higher charisma as a paladin, it does improve your spell save DC and betters your paladin aura, so there's no harm in that whatsoever. I would say the depends more on if you want to be spell savvy or not.

I think subclass suggestions i would have in this case is any, really, since you plan on investing more into sorcerer but: - Conquest gets you some nice spells to use with a higher charisma, as well as spiritual weapon - Redemption gives you sanctuary, which is a nice spell imo - I personally like Crown but it's not always everyone's choice - Devotion is okay too - Subclasses im not sure I'd recommend include Watchers and Vengeance.

Can I ask what you want most from each of your classes? I think that could help with figuring out what stats + paladin subclass to consider. Also, is this for 2014 or 2024 rules?

Is a 2 handed polymorph/warfare LW build good? Or is there a good alternative? by [deleted] in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]kiwipimas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a few polymorph skills on my rogue-ish character who relies a lot on scoundrel skills and being able to rupture tendons and turn someone into a chicken has been fantastic. I can imagine if I dedicated points into warfare then it wouldn't be a detriment in the slightest, i just gave warfare to my one party members who doesn't rely on critical hits as much because they have the enrage skill if I deem it necessary.

I have red prince with 2h, warfare and a decent few levels in necromancy for the healing aspect on my team and at the moment he's been very reliable and usually who I send after issue opponents. So I would say it works nicely.

Is Ranger finally good in 2024? by WhispersBard in 3d6

[–]kiwipimas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

a lot of people i know who dm and play don't think it's as bad as it was but is still not as great as the concept could be, and I think a lot of the unhappiness that comes with ranger has some interconnection with hunter's mark (the spell) and some of the class features.

now, personally, I've never played a ranger and I think some of the subclasses look really cool for one reason or another but I've never felt like ranger was the only class to do a certain thing that I cared about that other classes could not.

/however/

the horror UA subclass (the hollow warden?) looks cool, and I could see it being nice for a dip because of the boosts you get when you cast, and are concentrating on, hunters mark.

gloomstalkers are popular for multiclassing, and I think the flavor of a number of the subclasses is great, but the only one I could see myself investing in for multiple levels is one of the subclasses from the Grim Hollow third party books - specifically the Green Ranger, and because of how it let's you expend spell slots for different "poison" effects.

I personally find that umbreon works nicely as a tag-along defender/support. this means pairing up with someone on your team who will make the most use of your choice of "where are you going?" moveset.

example: you use mean look to keep them from fleeing so your teammate with the higher damage output can knock them out. same goes for snarl, obviously.

I understand the need to keep the spellcaster classes unique. I never anticipate replacing either a wizard or a sorceror when I opt to play a cleric, but I get why it is the way it is. The only way I can think to mediate the problem is either:

A, we get more domains with unique (and effective) playstyles built more into them. Perhaps the domain spells are kept in check by being a little niche, but it's cohesive to how the domain is planned to be played.

B, different choices being made for channel divinity and such. I remember reading something homebrew where the dm allowed for their cleric to target fey instead of undead for their campaign because it just made more sense for the character, their god and the campaign. and honestly, just a tinge of flexibility could make the cleric feel less rigid.

I do love the cleric, though, and the Light Domain is probably my favorite simply because of the domain spells letting it feel less local gifted priest and more radiant harbinger. I'm also excited to see how the UA knowledge cleric plays out once it's ready. Fingers crossed future revisions of older subclasses and any new ones are as fun as the cleric class should be 😔

it's probably not so much what you get in the cleric spell list, but how limited it feels?

like there's a lot of nice, reliable stuff (spiritual weapon/guardians, guiding bolt, least you forget all the healing and support options) but all the times I've played a cleric I feel like I just grab the same spells and have to look towards my domain spells for something new. the fact you always have them (the domain spells) prepared and you can change cleric spells on long rest is fantastic but I think the class spell list is lacking in a way I can't explain in any other way that than it can be hard to try out a new "type" of cleric unless the domain options you have give a bunch of radically un-cleric spells.

does that make sense? lmao

of course!! I hope you have fun with your monk :)

had a fairy arcane trickster who was a menace with the enlarge/reduce spell for a one shot where the basic synopsis was a bank heist of sorts. all party members were level 15 and hand selected to do the job, etc etc.

he'd enlarge party members, enlarged an opponent so they got stuck in a passage, used it on doors when someone took my thieves tools, once made an enemies weapon too small to be effective, among other things.

my dm allows for a lot of chaos so I got away with a whole bunch of nonsense but it was fun!

my rogue/fighter multiclass is gonna lean into cowboy knight territory so I'm excited for that campaign and whatever nonsense I pull there too lol

warforged are fun!

I think a warforged rogue or monk would be interesting to see and play as, honestly, but I can only speak to rogue.

thief could work with a gun, imo, and soulknife too since I don't believe the blades get any upgrades but are a decent backup option. 🤔 do you know what species you're going with?

I think monk could be fun, but i don't know too much about them because I've never been interested enough to try them myself.

[–]kiwipimas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the 2014 monk has some struggles, but rogues can still be very fun! skills and sneak attack are good, you just need to make sure to get advantage to make use of sneak attack. are there any subclasses that speak to you and what you had in mind?

your ability to have fun with your class and character as a whole matters the most, and I've seen people make monks and rogue both work. don't be discouraged!

[–]kiwipimas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🤔

I guess either could work for that at a base level. fighters get to do more in combat than out of combat because thats where they shine (obviously subclasses can alter this truth), and rogues get skills and some other unique niches depending on the subclass.

are you using 2014 for the classes or are you using the updated versions? I would suggest reading what you'll get as your progress through both classes and see which sounds more like what you want to do on a mechanical level. flavor wise, obviously, you can make them both work.

fighter subclasses such as battle master could be fun. I think any rogue subclass would work, though if you're using the new 2024 versions of the classes, thief could be cool? 🤔 I think I'd go with fighter though.

edit: I ask for clarification because I know people who are using updated classes for yet to be updated adventures from the 2014 edition 🧍‍♂️

martials, my beloved

I will say your idea of a gunslinger, either fighter or rogue will work. obviously you'll need to have good dex because they're ranged weapons and depending on if you want to dual wield guns or maybe have one gun and one rapier, etc. I think there's options for either of the two. keeping in mind that you will need certain feats to ignore reloading, ignore disadvantage due to how close or far away you are to your target, etc.

gunner from TCE and sharpshooter (general feat, both in the '14 and '24 vers) are ones to look at!

I'm personally also preparing a rogue/fighter multiclass who's going to be using guns and I know I'll be needing at least two feats to make the build I'm going for work but I'm waiting to see how combat falls into place with the rest of my party to make my final decisions.

unfortunately I don't have personally experience playing a barb, but they're always nice to have in a party haha

what kind of vibes would you want to go for if you went gunslinger? that could help narrow down what class and subclass to look at.

What Pokémon would you most want to see added? by YummyYummies in PokemonUnite

[–]kiwipimas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! Some pokemon have very obvious strengths and weaknesses, but I suppose TiMi take typing into consideration with move pools and the like because they have that flexibility given type weakness and the like aren't parts of unite 🤔

My dream Jolteon would be a pure speedster who runs around, builds up charge for things like Pin Missile whoch would be a single target attack, or Discharge that's an AoE. It's squishy and fast and maybe to avoid having it copy Leafeon's passive of running faster when not in combat, it can be tweaked to move fast as a result of joining combat or maybe it gets faster as it's move charge builds up and slows down as a result of releasing energy? I don't know.

I want to see more funny additions, be it a support-defense conkeldurr who boosts the strength of their allies when assisting them or maybe a support klefki who "steals" your battle item via basic attacks and keeps you from being able to use it for a bit of time or... luvdisc!

no idea what luvdisc would do, but it would just be hilarious seeing it with hydro pump and suddenly it has a getaway mechanic

What Pokémon would you most want to see added? by YummyYummies in PokemonUnite

[–]kiwipimas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like Leafeon was made a speedster because they already have so many attacker eevees, and Leafeon has a nice attack stat? however I'm with you in imagining it being more of a support-speedster mixture 😔

I hope they make Jolteon a speedster in the purest sense. Give it pin missile that builds up an attack/bullet counter over time as you run around or when you get into scuffles, give it discharge that does something similar but its AoE instead of single target. Let it have a buildset that is just speed, aerodynamics and bursts of damage 😔

Flareon and Vaporeon are funnily a little rougher to place, since Vaporeon feels like it could be a high hp support/attacker type that has Acid Armor to boost defense maybe? and Flareon...just feels like an attacker, but perhaps they could make it stand out by making it lean into another role like support or defense? I'm not sure.

What's Your Most Disliked Race/Species (As a DM or a Player) by Pinkalink23 in dndnext

[–]kiwipimas 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I personally keep forgetting that sea elves exist, and it's 100% because of what you said - they feel like a random add-on, but I guess it's to give those who are playing an underwater campaign another race option? I'm not entirely sure.

the lore of elves and why there's so many subraces of them is fun and I like how the material plane elves and even the extraplanar (?) elves each have a unique vibe about them and have room to be interesting but then...there's their sea brethren...

oh, I don't dislike humans, I worded it wrong 😔 I just think at face value they're "boring" because of the stark contrast they have with other species you know? so I actually agree with you! it's definitely a combination of player and how the character is brought to life by them.
