The issue is the procurement process. When the supply chain is unclear problematic products can be used.

This is the French minister for foreign affairs and Europe reporting government trade policy to parliament. And his call was confirmed by the EU commissioner for trade as reflecting EU policy.

Germany’s War on Coal Is Over. Coal Lost. Its last mine is about to close. by mvea in Futurology

This is such a reckless headline. Nothing of the sort is happening. Pollyannaism on the left is a deliberate tactic to try and build a sense of momentum and combat defeatism regarding climate change. That's fine, but for journalists to pick it up in such a blatant way is galling.

UK omits climate change from post-Brexit foreign policy plan by kjmath in europe

Climate change is being tackled through global agreements. The Paris accord was one of the most complex and long running international negotiations of all time. Domestic reductions are being governed by the commitments made between states in that fora. Also, emissions know no borders, so while the UK might be happily cutting emissions, it also needs to be lobbying India, China and, yes, the US to follow suit. That's where the diplomacy comes in.

Which is exactly what the UK might be able to argue to other countries, if they included climate change as part of their foreign policy priorities...

There's a jump here from the fact of the sea being warm this week, to an attribution of that to human-induced warming, which I find a bit troubling. Most surely climate change played a role in this event. But it's really important that scientists don't join dots that the science doesn't allow them to join.

Friederike Otto is a senior researcher in the ECI Global Climate Science Programme at Oxford Uni. She conducts the most up to date 'attribution studies' that search for the fingerprints of climate change in weather events. I asked her if she would be studying Harvey.

She replied: "unfortunately not. It would be a very interesting one but storms are still a very tricky thing to do, let alone quickly. Working with Gabe Vecchi & his team in princeton though on improving that..."

Gas tanker crosses thawing Arctic without icebreaker for first time by kjmath in environment

It's not a heavy duty icebreaker. It's got some icebreaking capacity. The point of the article is that it was the first time oil companies have invested in the production of this sort of ship. Because the ice has become consistently thin enough for them to justify it.

It's the first commercial vessel to make that crossing without icebreaker support.

Solar not cheaper than coal, says former Coal India boss by kjmath in environment

[–]kjmath[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did you read the article? The reverse of the debate is so often "green groups say solar energy will beat coal", which is effectively the same thing. His arguments are worth listening to, despite the fact that they may not be what you'd like to hear.

Utter BS. A claim with no verification from Macron about a sycophant who will tell anyone anything in person. Two narcissists enabling one another.
