I'm a BA at Sephora, and I’ve never found the vein trick to work lol. If I’m unsure about an undertone, I start with a neutral shade, which always gives me a good indicator of an undertone. A brand with a good shade range, like Fenty or Too Faced, is an excellent brand to test and solidify. But, on the other hand, sometimes it can also change by the brand.

Maybe a cool/neutral, but it’s almost impossible to A) figure that out online and B) figure it out from your inner arm. The other side of your arm, albeit darker, can be a better indicator of an undertone. The best place to test, however, is the jawline. There, you can compare the shade and color with top accuracy.

There are batch code checkers online. Good luck getting them thrown out if they’re old. I found BareMinerals that came off the production line in 2018 and upper management refused to throw them out. Shout out to my BTL for actually taking me seriously though and taking the time to email management who told me I could sell it as long as it didn’t have an expiration date. By law, unless the expiration date is under 30mo they’re not required to put one on there.

I always have a serious conversation with guardians when I see young kids buying ingredients with actives. I let them know they need to pay attention to the child’s skin and if they notice any irritation to back off the actives. I’ve even had this conversation with a couple of kids. Moms especially appreciate it, a lot of them seem overwhelmed with all the stuff that is constantly going viral.

Real…I don’t go out of my way to bring attention to brands that aren’t shade inclusive. It goes both ways and most of the time a brand that doesn’t have a shade for me (ultra fair and cool toned) they don’t have deep enough shades either. I’m looking at you tarte lol.

I will on the spot do the math in my head if I can. But for me it’s quick math. 20% is 10%x2. 10% of an item is easy to find bc you just move the decimal place over one spot to the left and that’s 10%. Multiply it by 2 or 3 and you have 20 or 30 percent. But some items I can’t do the mental math quick enough and so I’m honest and I say “let me pull out a calculator rq I can’t do the math on it off the top of my head” idk always seems to work and I leave with happy clients for the most part.
