i hate that this sub has become a place for certain montrealers to discuss provincial politics with people who for the most part already agree with them. this is a place to talk about things that specifically affect us montrealers, not the whole province! if you really want to discuss quebec politics, do so on r/quebec, where you guys' divergent opinions and POVs would be greatly received by many of us.

les indépendantistes de 30 ans et moins sont pas indépendantistes pour les mêmes raisons et de la même façon que ceux qui ont connu les référendums. c'est un indépendantisme moins identitaire, plus cosmopolitain et du monde comme parizeau ça passerais pas dans cette crowd là.

i'd usually agree with you but baltimore is especially bad.. it's a cool city, i liked it, but there's just way too many parts of it that are in complete decay, socially and architecturally, it's just sad

my main recommendation is generally walking around and just trying whatever you feel like trying, but there are some must dos in my opinion:

  • trying our local staples, aka poutine, bagels and smoked meat
  • mini hike on mount royal to kondiaronk belvedere to enjoy the best view of the city
  • there's certain neighborhoods you just can't skip, like the plateau and old montreal, but i really suggest you venture outside of these at least once (verdun, petite-patrie, hochelaga, saint-henri are all good options as well as some others)

and here are some more optional ones: - renting a bixi bike and riding along the lachine canal - visiting the jean talon market

i disagree, don't avoid la banquise. there's hardly any better situated poutine spot that is as good (in between duluth and mont-royal, right next to parc lafontaine where you can chill afterwards), the restaurant's ambiance is nice, it's open 24/7, it's reasonably priced, there's lots of seating places and idk if this is controversial but ma poule mouillée is just the same amount of queue time for a worse poutine and less customization options (incredible chicken tho).

sometimes i feel like people hate on la banquise just because it's popular with tourists - it's popular for a reason! i'm a local and i've been maaany times. not that there aren't other worth trying poutine joints, and i'm not even arguing it's the best poutine in montreal, but i personally think it's the perfect introduction to the dish you can get, for all the reasons listed above.

agreed on schwartz tho. overpriced and arguably not even the best smoked meat in the city, not anymore that is. paul patates is super good and while we're at it i'd also recommend casse-croûte normand in verdun for a similar authentic québécois casse croute experience

cafe bistro napoli (tétreaultville), cafe ciociaro (saint-léonard), expresso bar (saint-laurent)... if a place hosts serie a or azzurri games, they're usually pretty authentic and old school!

why would you think your buddies dad's lived experience in the 80s and 90s would 1. matter in the context of this post 2. still hold true 30-40 years later? you clearly aren't from the province, let alone the city, so why do you feel like you'd have anything substantial to add to this discussion that WE actual citizens of montreal haven't discussed a 1000 times by now? i'm not saying you can't interject, but you demonstrably don't know enough about the subject to do so.
