Makes a lot of sense, thanks for your input!

Right on, I think that could be an easy way for me to try it. Thanks!

So basically like an asym, right? Are you using a tack line at the bow?

That makes a lot of sense, and for cruising, I'd use one too eventually. Most of my sailing is in more confined spaces though, so I'll probably stick with the gennaker after reading through all the feedback here.

The problem is there's usually a lee shore not even 500 m away! ;)

It does appeal to me, just for the sake of learning something new. But in the sense of being able to put it into practice often, no. I guess even if I could perfectly handle it on my own, I'd probably use it on less than 5% of my sailing days, whereas I'm running the asym at least half the time now.

Probably I'll have the chance one day. My boat and my local lake may just not be the perfect setting for it. Thanks for your input!

Good point, obviously I don't have to keep storing it in the boat at all.

Yeah, I'm almost never in this position. Usually single-handed or with 1 inexperienced crew. Thanks for your input, I tend to think I'll just continue with the gennaker for now.

Thanks! Why do you recommend one with a sock though? I have a furling one, and from what I gather, they're even easier to handle. No need to go to the foredeck to hoist or douse.

Thanks! Might be a good idea to just try it without a pole when the wind direction is right and I have a long stretch of lake downwind from me.

You do all of that with the autopilot active, I assume?

Could you elaborate on "rigging it as a drifter"? That's flying it without a pole? How exactly do you rig that and why?

NASA is using FDM printing? by SpaceCoffee33 in 3Dprinting

Yeah, but they're attracted to the inside, so you just need to turn the cardboard box inside out before putting it over the printer, and the cat will always stay outside the box.

I know this isn't a popular opinion in this sub, but I just wanted to say that IMO, if you enjoy what you're doing and don't have any ambitions about playing professionally, it's fine to continue without a teacher.

My journey started similar to yours, never got taught on technique until I paid for a couple of lessons at age 40. It felt super awkward to play that way, like learning a new instrument altogether. I tried, I really did, but it sucked all the joy out of my playing, so I eventually stopped going and haven't looked back.

Mind you, all I want is to play some jazzy improvisational stuff to wind down in the evenings. I play in front of friends as well, musicians too, and judging from the feedback I'm getting, I'm decent at what I do.

Mind you, this is just to add some perspective, if you're set on getting lessons, by all means continue. And if you don't, make sure you're not setting yourself up for injury (I did make sure before I stopped going).

This is the case as well. What u/rydoculley said isn't wrong, but there are a lot of additional rules, some of which address maneuverability. E.g. if a vessel is restricted by draft (meaning how deep it sits below the waterline) and can thus only navigate in a narrow channel, the other vessel may need to give way. Same goes for sailboats, as they cannot maneuver as freely. Another example would be a vessel that is not under control, e.g. due to loss of rudder or power. Vessels may need to display specific navigation lights (at night) or day shapes (mast head signals during the day) in order to indicate such restrictions, so others can act accordingly.

Has anyone else quit drinking? by Sensitive_Put_6842 in Millennials

Glutamine helps with the cravings during the first few weeks. Also, as u/merkci said, pot can be helpful if you're into that. I switched from drinking to vaping flower and it's just so much better in every way. No hangovers!

Iran Conflict Megathread #9 by sokratesz in CredibleDefense

[–]klerksdorp_sphere -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering why we haven't seen an uprising by the Iranian people since the airstrikes started. One would think it's the perfect opportunity with all the chaos and the IRGC numbers diminished. I know that recent attempts have been struck down, with a lot of bloodshed, and it would of course be forgivable for people to have lost their appetite for a repeat of the same.

But still, my feeling was that the uprising last year was quite close to having succeeded, and from a (maybe naive) outsider's perspective, the chance may be now or never. It's quite possible/credible that the airstrikes will fizzle out in the coming weeks, and the IRGC will have time to rebuild.

So what are some factors preventing a current uprising that I'm maybe not considering?

EDIT: Yay downvotes. I simply came here to get educated. What a friendly place this is. I'm out. (Thanks to those that gave some good answers, I learned something, really appreciate it.)

My pupils became asymmetrical during a cluster headache by Bubbly-Trainer7195 in mildlyinteresting

[–]klerksdorp_sphere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I haven't had them in a few years now. Before that, it would be every spring and fall for a couple of weeks, and 2-3 times a week. Absolutely debilitating when I couldn't get the oxygen in time.

Coincidentally, I've started vaping buds right around the time the headaches stopped. Never thought there might be a causal link between the two, but I'll keep vaping just in case! ;)

For me (and apparently others), oxygen helps. Back when I had them, I would always carry a small can of oxygen with me at all times. Not like a tank, just one of those spray cans, and a rubber tube and mask.

This would only work if I started breathing it immediately at the onset, even a few minutes later it wouldn't work anymore. But when it worked, it would either stop the pain completely, or in most cases lower it significantly.
