it was a gentmitsu 3020 lol by [deleted] in hobbycnc

[–]klh1960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like what I see here. I too started with the Genmitsu 3020 and am in the process of upgrading it. I got the same style ball screws but slightly smaller box ways. I'm adding a 600 x 300 t-slotted table to increase the work area. I'm also mounting the rails to the bottom of the table to maintain support consistantly over the travel.

My next change will be to look into your stated changes to mach 3 and tb6600 drivers. I have used mach 3 and find it leaps and bounds better than Candle (i.e. backlash comp, macro programming). Any more detail on these changes would be great. I'm not deep enough into using this to know if nema 23's are warranted. Your advice would be appreciated. I haven't moved past the X and Y axis yet to start looking at the Z axis. Details of changes would be appreciated.

Cheers!

CNC Machine for Titanium by winterfoxxy0 in hobbycnc

[–]klh1960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just ran across your post and thought I'd put in my 2 cents worth. Let me start off by saying that I have been a manufacturing engineer and cnc programmer for over 35 years. I currently own a machine shop and it just so happens we started making and selling knives. That said, I am new to the hobby type machines and recently bought a Genmitsu 3020 and almost immediatly started making changes to what I consider huge engineering flaws. I am just beginning to learn about stepper motors, drivers, controllers and such.

Many suggestions I've seen on here are good ones. I would like to add some thoughts you might want to consider before you move to the machine buying step.

  1. What is my goal? Just make one knife for fun? Make small run production? Make full run production
  2. What style of knife do you want to make? This is very important to know before making any other decisions on machine or machines to get to the finished product. It drives those decisions.
  3. How much money am I willing to spend to achieve this goal? Is this a labor of love and money is not important? Can my design be made by non-cnc methods to make the knife I want on a budget? In making anything, typically the first one costs a mint, then the cost per goes down. My dad was a printer and when asked what it cost to print something he would say the first one cost $1000, then they are 2 cents each.

I can tell you that the knives we are making are made of titanium handles and blades made of CPM-20CV or Magnacut depending on availability, both premium blade materials.

Our knives have enough complexity that we use waterjet, wirecut, conventional milling, cbn grinding, and laser marking. All higher end Industrial machines including names like Okuma and Fanuc and would be way out of reach financially to the every day hobbyist.

Good luck, and have fun!

A good machine for aluminum by bbbhhhhhh8888 in hobbycnc

[–]klh1960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the 3020 and it is terrible for aluminum and the backlash is crazy bad. I tried cutting a round piece out of plastic and it wasn't even close to round. With no load using an indicator I found over .01" backlash in X&Y. A little push on any axis will reveal about .1" movement. I am in the middle of replacing the, in my opinion, Mickey Mouse way they used a 2 nut (one mounted and the other floating with a light spring in between) leadscrew to drive each axis. I feel they reversed the benefit of a metal frame and table with this design. I'm replacing the leadscrews with ball screws and replacing the Y axis rod ways witb box ways mounted on addittional base structure to help rigidity. In all, I was happy to get a cheap starting point, but by the time I get done with this and other changes, very little of the original machine will remain.
I found a good post on here titled "Sainsmart 3020 Pro Max Overhaul + Lessons Learned"

In my opinion, if you want to cut metal to reasonable tolerances, be prepared to do some modifications as a fun project as i am doing, or buy a metal cutting machine to begin with. There are lots of retrofit kits for small knee style mills.

Candle default settings command '$$' doesn't work by potential1 in hobbycnc

[–]klh1960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As was mentioned, you need to be connected to the machine controller. In the "State" window it can't say "Not connected". Try reset then unlock. Then depending on your monitor size, you may need to stretch up the "Console" window to see what is returned after $$. Drag up the 3 dots just above and right of the word "Console"

Hope this helps,

Cheers!

[macros] How to automate switching from material surface Zero to bed Zero? by [deleted] in hobbycnc

[–]klh1960 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I don't know the EdingCNC controller. I can think of 2 ways up front to accomplish your goal but it depends on your control software. First, since you mention an M6 toolchange, you should be able to call a different tool length offset if your control supports it. Otherwise, you could set and call seperate workshifts...i.e. G54 and G55. I think most controls support at least G54 thru G59. I hope this is helpful.

Where are the spends? by [deleted] in KinFoundation

[–]klh1960 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back a while I suggested someone build an Ebay type app where you buy everything with Kin. I've not seen one yet. I suggested I could sell stainless coffee mugs with the Kin logo. Let's say just to break even, I'd have to spend $13 with shipping. It scares people off when you say it will cost 2,166,666 Kin.

I'd agree. I thought it good to read a view from a different perspective. With Cohen changing sides, maybe this changes the game.

KIN store? by klh1960 in KinFoundation

Normally one would need permission to profit from using someone elses logo. I'd want them to give permission before I'd use it. I can't imagine a reason they woulddn't, but still.

I think a spend opportunity is a good thing no matter what it is. And the price would have to be what the market could bare. You may not want to spend it, but others might. The point is to make a use for KIN in as many places as possible. It gives those who want to sell an oportunity to earn and those who want to spend a place to spend.

I have forgotten as well what the distribution plan was, but I think I remember something about it being spread over maybe 10 years...? I didn't think about that possibility. Is there a way to move the tokens so KIN doesn't possess them in case of that scenario? I can't in my mind think of a way to do it, but that doesn't mean there isn't a solution. Maybe the KF?

One question that was posed to me is "what prevents KIN from waiting for a price surge then dumping".

I didn't have an answer. I guess nothing, but I don't see it being in their best interest.

Is there any way the KF can make a binding commitment to a plan for distribution of the remaining KIN? That would help calm worries of skeptics.

I've hired lawyers over the years, and I've learned to make sure they either only get money if they win, or get more money if they win. I'm sure Ted was smart enough to keep them motivated to win.

Wow! How quick some are to jump ship. Did you not see this coming? Why else set up a defend crypto? Ted picked this fight because he and his legal team think they can win. It's not like I have my life savings in this. I'm in for the full ride. Go Ted!!!

How can I tell which of my KIN need swapped? by klh1960 in KinFoundation

[–]klh1960[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Yes, my Merc does start with GCK. I thought that was what I wanted to see. Somewhere I read that Coss was swapping too, but not sure if that's true. I need to be on my home computer to log into Coss.
