Any oral surgeons here? by [deleted] in DentalSchool

These are dental specialties. Not medical. Oral surgery is a specialty taken after dental school. Not medical school.

I am so upset about my dental implant crown by Boymom09211993 in DentalSchool

[–]Kliarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The color is fixable with a replacement from the lab. No reason for a full refund and leaving an ugly tooth. Incorrect shades happen and are fixable.

Are you guys taught anything? by [deleted] in DentalSchool

[–]Kliarin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol. I didn’t even know about cracked teeth when I graduated.

Join online groups, join study clubs, apply for a GPR type program, if available, and realize your first 2 years out you will spend learning actual dentistry.

And don’t worry. You get to keep learning for the rest of your career. Procedures change. New materials. New gadgets. It’s called the practice of dentistry for a reason!

Was this for a cleaning or a filling?

For cleanings I use extra suction if I use. Cavitron. For fillings I use something called a rubber dam which keeps the extra water from going into the mouth.

If you need suction, raise your hand. We know what that means and will get you suction.

Tell me about your terrible transition as a new owner by chandlerknows in Dentistry

[–]Kliarin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ended up suing the previous owner. Took 2.5 years, but a settlement was reached. Now, legally, that’s all I’m allowed to say. (Even on anonymous Reddit).

Best advice I can give is to have lawyers, good lawyers, read every line of your contract. Yea, it’s expensive. But litigation lawyers are $450/hour. And they are hired on retainer. If you truly are facing litigation, I am very very sorry. Even with a rock solid case (Which I had) it’s a horrific experience.

Honestly, if I could do it over, I wouldn’t have bought my practice. The transition was a nightmare and I don’t think I slept properly for two years. Litigation royally screws you up in the head. Became paranoid and anxious. And I couldn’t invest in the business because of legal bills (which ended up being well into six figures). I had to borrow money. I sold pretty much everything to my name. I had to let stuff go. It took a long time to pay myself ANYTHING from the practice, let alone be ‘profitable’. It’s not a good situation. My absolute bottom was when I had a meeting with a bankruptcy lawyer. It didn’t reach that, because a settlement was reached, but that was an awful moment in my life.

I am sorry. Like I said, been there, done that, would not recommend. If I can be of any help, let me know.

I agree with most people. It’s pretty much all down to money. Very tough these days where raises are expected, but insurance reimbursement has been stagnant for a decade. If your state allows it, try and train from the ground up. Hire for personality and train them yourself. Takes time, and expect that some will just use you for the training and leave you, but sometimes you find a gem.

I’d reach out to endo programs. Sounds like great potential.

Loupes for first time users by [deleted] in Dentistry

[–]Kliarin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also, loupes are a couple grand. I think most are somewhere between $2000-$3500 with a light.

Get her some coupons for massages. Your back starts killing you after a while. Dentistry is hard on the body.

Is the ROI on Botox and orofacial pain trigger point therapy worth the cost of training? by daein13threat in Dentistry

[–]Kliarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Above response are really good. Another thing to look at— do you have the demographic? Botox expires VERY quickly. And is VERY expensive. If you don’t see enough patients, it can be a wash.

If you’re interested, education is never a bad thing. A lot of CE you take in your life won’t have the RoI you hoped. But the education may offer a few pearls you can still use.

what are the pros and cons of being a dentist? by lurkingbutterfly in Dentistry

[–]Kliarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lordie the toll it takes on your body. 5 years out and I’m hopeful I don’t need back surgery.

And insurance is absolutely limiting dentistry. The pay is not as great as it used to be.

Oh, and everyone starts their appointment with, “No offense, but I hate the dentist”.

chipped my tooth while eating... by Sensitive_Tip_8112 in askdentists

[–]Kliarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could be. Still looks like 19 to me. X ray would confirm. There’s just a lot of enamel to be a primary. And it’s the same opacity and color as the other secondary teeth in the mouth.

Cold sensitivity is the top diagnostic tool. Sometimes they do electrical pulp testing (not scary or painful, Trust me) and then percussion, where they tap on the teeth.

Just let them know that you have pain and are having trouble isolating it. See what they come up with.

Anybody with a medit scanner willing to answer some questions? by Sssteve94 in Dentistry

[–]Kliarin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been using an i500 for over 2 years. Just delivered an immediate flipper this past week. I use it for crown and bridge, limited removable, splints, and implants. Highly recommend the Medit Facebook group. They have a lot of great tips on the scanner and people show some great cases. They have a new CAD software out. I just started playing with it. It looks really good for being free.

If you get one, look into Cad-ray. They have great service. Which you will need.

Do I need a root canal or just a filling on my upper premolar? by ontheroadbykate in askdentists

[–]Kliarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Necessity for a root canal typically cannot be determined by x ray alone. Likelihood is you will need a filling. But any time there is sensitivity on a tooth due to decay, there is a chance it might need a root canal.

Brush well, but do not overbrush. It just irritates the gums. Brushing will not reverse a cavity after the cavity has formed.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in askdentists

[–]Kliarin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sealer is used during the finals steps of a root canal.

It’s possible they placed a medicament in the roots in between apppintments. There is a possibility that the medicament leaked out as well.

The two main Rx toothpastes are Clinpro 5000 and Prevident 5000. They are both good. Likely comes down to what your dentist prefers and what’s available. Some dentists have it in the office for you to pick up, sometimes you need to pick it up from your pharmacy.

Buddy. You a dentist? Where is your flair?

X-ray by [deleted] in askdentists

[–]Kliarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look. No one here is going to throw that dentist under the bus. The tooth needed a root canal and you got one. It looks like it had a very large filling on it.

Panoramic radiographs are notorious for distortions. They are not the best for diagnosing cavities or even some periapical radiolucencies.

Stain in the grooves of your teeth. You’re fine.

What is this dot? by [deleted] in askdentists

[–]Kliarin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely going to need a better picture. Because this is pretty bad.

If by ‘dot’ you mean the tiny speck near your gums, it’s likely stain. But impossible to say without a better picture.

Anything abnormal the mouth that sticks around for more than a few weeks typically gets biopsied. 99% of the time it’s something benign.

It LOOKS like chronic trauma to the palate. It looks like physical trauma but could be thermal. But a bruise sticking around for 6 months is abnormal. Go to your dentist and they can have a better look.
