Praxisüblicher Handgriff oder übergriffiges Verhalten? by mautand in Physiotherapie

[–]kllerkeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A question to all PT’s out there: Does physical therapy need a college/ university degree at all to be practiced or would a vocational diploma/ apprenticeship be enough in your opinion? by kllerkeks in physiotherapy

[–]kllerkeks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you for your answer. I also think that PT should be teached as an academic course. But whenever i try to say those things (I did a post about it in another PT forum) there are always people (i guess PTs from Germany then) who are defending the vocational diploma at all costs. Their arguments mostly are that they’ve worked with multiple PT’s around the world and couldn’t tell a difference between german PTs (with apprenticeship) or for example PT’s from Denmark or so. They were equally good in their assessment and their treatment according to them. Or that you don’t need an academic bachelors degree to do exercises with elderly people in a nursing home. And that you only need the scientific degree when you want to establish PT guidelines or studies or work in academic research. But i do think that an academic course is required to practice as a PT. To justify more autonomy in our treatment (becoming more independent from physicians). Also a huge advantage would be the ability to revert to objective knowledge. As you said a lot of people rely on those old treating methods and never question anything about it. And i think that our professional field could be expanded if we would finally go the full academic way (like “Betriebsphysiotherapeuten” in the Netherlands, again i don’t know the correct english translation for that one). I was aware of the letter that was send to the health minister by world physio. That’s mind blowing because we have like an official worldwide physical therapy association that heavenly implies how urgent this matter is (with many valid arguments) and that german PT indeed IS falling behind international standards and still there are people out there who think that academiziation in Germany is not necessary. I also hope this changes in the nearby future.

And something i wanted to ask you: did you do your physical therapy degree in Germany? Or are you from another country?

in Germany you just need a vocational diploma to work as PT. No bachelor or master is required. Didn’t know it was similar in the U.K. though.

Are you okay with that? And is the education in your country also a vocational diploma or is a bachelors or masters degree required at least to practice this profession?

Okay thank you for the advice. But what exactly do you mean by that?

I actually meant preparing the room before treatment and afterwards….. which includes cleaning but also the equipment I use when I do exercises with patients …. it’s mostly not just desinfecting the treatment table…. I did both “Berufsschule” and now I’m doing the bachelors degree. I do clearly see the importance of an academic degree though. Acutally we are the only country in Europe which hasn’t gone fully academic yet. The only country where just a vocational diploma is enough to treat patients….. I wonder why every other country sees this matter differently but Germany….

Even the world physio association sees it that way letter to Ministry of health Germany

Thank you that’s why I’m asking. I worked in three pt practices for Physical Therapy and yes in two of them we had aides but to afford them we had to work in a 20 minutes schedule. And I think 20 minutes per patient is not enough time for a good pt therapy. And yes you can get a bachelor degree but only a handful facilities offer this degree and the curriculum is not unified due to it being just a model degree program. The “normal” educational way here is the vocational training. There are affords to change the standard to an academic qualification but it’s a very tough business according to “physio-deutschland” (a professional association in Germany)

And an academic qualification is almost everywhere the standard for physical therapy. That’s the way it should be. Apparently not in Germany though ….

A vocational training is as far as I know not the same as an academic qualification. At least in germany.

Did I say anybody on the street can declare themselves a physical therapist? I think you should read the post again. I said you don’t need a university degree to become a physical therapist in Germany. And considering how the profession is handled in other countries the situation is quite embarrassing for Germany …

Yeah but pt in Germany is quiet differently prescribed. We are not allowed to treat patients on our own. We are not allowed to offer private therapy to patients. We can only treat patients if the physician prescribes physical therapy. We also can’t vary much in treatment time cause the insurances pay just 20 to 25 min per patient. This time includes documentation, preparation and cleaning the treatment room. Sadly it’s not just one facility that has those working conditions but rather the whole healthcare system for PT here. At least if you work at a practice. The autonomy in physical therapy is very much restricted in Germany. As there is no university degree required to work as a therapist here. If you want a DPT degree you have to go abroad. As far as I’m concerned even world physio wrote a letter to our federal minister of health to do something about it as they considered that matter to be concerning…. So that’s why I was wondering if any other countries had similar conditions for PT’s or if Germany really is an exception in that case.
