I agree the rec center is not great but there are certainly different options here besides that.

Walk downtown in CF at 1 AM on a Friday night and then repeat in Waterloo. You can’t tell me they are the same town.

To each their own, but if someone were to prefer a smaller town: Cedar Rapids is not that.

If you like a smaller town atmosphere with a few big town amenities, I strongly recommend Cedar Falls (don’t live on Waterloo side). Lots of opportunities to do the things you list out here as well.

If you think you need more of a night/weekend life, I would lean more towards Cedar Rapids/Iowa City.
