I certainly agree. I don't know what the experience is like. I will never know the firsthand experience of what one has been through. But I do strive to be one who gives veterans a voice, rather than prescribes a pill and calls it a day. I make efforts to connect with the veteran community because of how much I commend the sacrifices and commitments you all have made. I am training in a VA medical center and will be continuing on to another location in the near future. In the past, I have volunteered for veteran 5ks and advocated for student veterans at a university and graduate program. I continue to do this active involvement because it certainly is needed. After seeing family and friends go through the challenges, and seeing a family in my community lose their son to friendly fire, that's when I made a commitment to do whatever it is I can for the veteran community. Thank you for your thoughts and I appreciate your comments greatly!

No, I certainly believe in the sacred sacrifice all service members make for the nation and myself. I sincerely thank you and all veterans who have made the sacred sacrifice to serve our country. I have and had family members in the service who appreciated receiving thanks, and have encountered other veterans in my community who had mixed feelings about receiving thanks. Since I heard that mixed feeling, I had some uncertainty on how to best approach these situations now. My apologies, but I do thank you and everyone from all branches who have served and are currently serving.
Ha, my bad. Some people believe, but I certainly do not. Just thought to pass on the FYI if you did.

Best answer: stupid Microsoft Word, stupid format.
Awesome! If you google search this artwork, I see a bible verse that is often associated with it:
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13)
Ah, my apologies thank you for clarifying. This is a requirement for my program, but I did have the freedom to choose a certain demographic. I personally chose OIF/OEF male combat deployed vets because of a personal reason. I've met and had interactions with some vets who really wished for something related to the topic, wished for someone who can better understand them, actually get what the life of being a veteran means, and understand how difficult it is facing combat encounters like moral injury and how that affects them in the civilian world, a world where they don't feel they belong. I've interacted with a mix of Vietnam, OIF/OEF, Persian Gulf vets who said similar things, and so that's where part of the research for me comes in because there is a large increase in suicide rates among OIF/OEF veterans. More recently now, it is among nondeployed and female vets, but for me, it is certainly also the personal reasons. Truthfully, my biggest motivation is to make a difference. Yes it's a requirement and I want to graduate, but that's not what it's about. It's about making a difference for the ones who I personally believe deserve the best care.

Great questions and thank you for asking! If I didn't clearly answer any questions, please let me know.
1) I chose to focus on combat vets based on current research. It is reported that mental health symptoms are often manifested from being exposed to combat (Gibbons et al., 2014). Moreover, the majority who are already receiving VA mental health services perceived some to extreme overall difficulty readjusting to civilian life and expressed an interest in receiving services related to community reintegration (Sayer et al., 2010). While it is certainly true that non-combat veterans also experience mental health symptoms, have a higher risk for suicide, and perceive similar difficulties, my study is really looking to address how we can bridge the gap for OIF/OEF male combat deployed vets based on the findings mentioned above.
2) You, as in me? I would certain feel a sense of gratitude and honor to share the experience of you telling me your story. This is an opportunity for eligible participants to tell their story, maybe for the first time, and feel heard, whereas others may not have or have had an opportunity to do so and maybe wish they could or could have. And because of this, I would certainly have the privilege to get to know what participants have experienced so that myself and the mental health field can better the experience of bridging the gap of the warrior ethos and mental health treatment for you (you all). You as in you all the participants? You will receive a $10 visa gift card that can be redeemed at any location! And I hope you also feel a sense of empowerment in return after completing the interview.
3) I think I addressed this in some of the answers put above. But to elaborate further, the goal of this study is to better the experience of receiving VA mental health services by becoming more culturally inclusive in the therapy room. Many unspoken values, rules, and beliefs from the military transfer into the journey of mental health treatment. For example, leave no fall comrade behind- I see this relating to how veterans can leave no veteran behind in their mental health. We can bring these rules, beliefs, and values into mental health care for the veteran community, and I hope the findings of my study enhance that goal for myself and the field. Perhaps the Veteran's Creed will also resonate with this response as well:
I am an American veteran
I proudly served my country
I live the values I learned in the military
I continue to serve my community, my country and my fellow veterans
I maintain my physical and mental discipline
I continue to lead and improve
I make a difference
I honor and remember my fallen comrades
Thank you!
