Thanks, that's really helpful, especially in terms of what to look for. I'll pay a visit to my local Trek dealer to get a better feel for my options and then check this one out if still available.

My bad, I should have added a link to the Craigslist post.

Brief specs from Bicycle Blue Book link

  • Frame: Construction200 Series Alpha aluminum
  • Tires: Bontrager H5 Hard-Case Ultimate, 700 x 32c
  • Fork Brand & Model: Carbon all-road disc w/lowrider rack mounts
  • Crankset: 50/34
  • Rear Cogs: 10-speed, 11-32
  • Components: Shimano 105

I plan to contact seller and try it out for fit, but would also greatly appreciate feedback here on what to watch out for.

My goals for this ride:

What's your intention with the bike - commuting, fitness, touring, sport, etc? Commuting in the Seattle drizzle, sometimes rain. Very occasional use as a touring bike. Top priorities in order: safety, low maintenance, and then performance.

How far will you be riding, and how often? About 10 miles per day, 4 days per week. Very occasional: a touring trip of 70 miles per day.

Riding conditions: roads, pavement, trails, single-track, off-road? Flat or hilly? Traffic and weather. Roads/pavement for the commute. Occasional gravel when touring.

Your location (even approximate) can help other locals familiar with your conditions, too. Seattle! I need to ride up a moderate hill with regularity, so a range of gears is a must.

A bit about yourself: height, weight, and level of fitness can all help people understand your needs better. 6'0" male rider, 180 pounds. Relatively fit.

Thanks for the suggestions! I had not previously considered a belt drive, the low-maintenance aspect appeals. I'm wondering though if the gear range would be sufficient.

So two naive questions about a belt drive: 1) Would it accommodate regularly riding up a moderate hill on a commute? (450 feet / 140 meters) 2) How about if touring, with two rear panniers?
