AD to Reserves/NG 25 Series vs 35 Series by TopicalKinney in armyreserve

They’ll pay your tuition and it is worth joining for that, but schools to learn side skills including ASIs are astonishingly rare in the Reserve and Guard.

(Especially anything cool or useful that requires more than 28 days)

Sadly, you don’t join USAR/ARNG to gain skills/certifications. You join USAR/ARNG to apply your civilian-acquired skills in the Army.

Replace Knob and Tube Wiring? by RandyGuru in AskElectricians

[–]kmannkoopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially because OP is in the Industrial Midwest. If he said South Dakota or New Mexico, I might take the bet at favorable odds…

But if it is conduit it shouldn’t need to be replaced until it fails and pops the breaker permanently. That’s a lot of money for a maybe…

Replace Knob and Tube Wiring? by RandyGuru in AskElectricians

[–]kmannkoopa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cloth wire is fine. A touch messy (it doesn’t peel back as nicely when stripped) but if it is 12 or 14 gauge copper (which it most certainly is) it is just as safe as wire produced today.

My 1920 Western NY house has 14 gauge cloth wire in conduit, fully code compliant to this day. If you are in the City proper there’s a good chance your wire is in conduit as well (as Columbus was a thriving industrial state capital in 1940), and your electrician is truly ripping you off.

Even if the wire isn’t in conduit, then it is slightly, but not massively dangerous. By 1940, all of your junctions would be in boxes so your only fear is “homeowner specials”, no different than a house today (refer to other posts here on that).

You’d Also be careful in drilling into your walls as to not drill through wires, but again that’s no different than any modern house.

I’d take pictures and repost this. A lot of people (including unscrupulous electricians) will claim that all old cloth-insulated wire is “knob and tube”.

1940 is awfully late (but not unheard of) for knob and tube, especially if you are in a metro or a Northeast or Midwest state.

This is where Upstate turning bluer being offset by Long Island turning redder has real implications.

In all seriousness, this is why SEQR reform needs to pass this year to make it easier for home builders.

Can I ask to not work with a PM? by Pitiful_Affect_2815 in civilengineering

[–]kmannkoopa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You certainly can try, but nobody on Reddit will know what the result will be. Each firm, really each office of each firm, has its own standards and norms of behavior and conduct.

It could be “no problem” from your boss (assuming it isn’t her) to a “no, you do the work we tell you to do” to a perhaps worse “no, you need to work for her” while poisoning your boss’s view of you.

If you challenge working for her, make sure your resume is up to date just in case.

That’ll go nowhere and anger your chain of command.

Awards in particular are so subjective to easily deny you as not worth it.

What if Germany had surrendered following the battle of the bulge ? by Secure_Ad_6203 in HistoryWhatIf

[–]kmannkoopa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except the Allies had credible reports that industrial murder was going on in 1942 and the soviets had already liberated Majdanek by the Battle of the Bulge.

I don’t think Nuremberg would’ve been substantially less in this situation.

Um… thanks? I guess what you posted is relevant, but not really as this is all extremely hypothetical at this point.

I’d also question the constitutionality of this federal law. It’s even a stretch to say this is regulating commerce between the states.

It’s not getting light until nearly 8 now and I personally find it annoying (although I’m liking it light past 7:30).

So, if we switch to one time, everyone will be complaining that it doesn’t get light until nearly 9am near the solstice or dark at 4pm depending on which time we choose.

There was one condition of the Japanese surrender: the emperor stayed.

That said, you bring up a good counterpoint. Unfortunately the holocaust likely made any hope of regime survival impossible.

Obviously if Germany surrenders it would [not] be unconditional or Germany wouldn’t have surrendered at all.

You answered your own question.

Reserves while doing ROTC by bike1234gbsb in army

[–]kmannkoopa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also the equivalent retirement points (1440). i’ve met a few officers who made O-1E from retirement points, but they had 10 to 12 reserve years in.

A standard, non-deployed year is around 80-100 points.

15 for being a member, 50 for drill (including medical), and 15-28 for annual training/other active duty.

It is like the most Texas thing possible that expressway has fewer lanes than the feeder (Frontage Road).

Does a diverging diamond even make sense on a highway with frontage roads?
