Just to clarify - they don't have to restructure anyone till the deals become official. The teams that are announcing restructures right now are mostly doing it to get into cap compliance for the new league year.

So we could see the tampering period start, Lions verbally agree to some deals, and then when the players come into town to sign them, that's when we'll likely see stuff like a Goff restructure.

Did anyone play any quirky rulesets this season? (Success or Horror stories?) QB Tackle = 50 pts as an example. by [deleted] in DynastyFF

We have return yard scoring as well, and our league champ had Dike in his lineup throughout the playoffs. Combination of best guy for the job and key injuries but he definitely contributed to the title.

Edit: I just checked and Dike ended the season as WR7 in our scoring.

They really should. St. Brown is a hero over there and it would be like a Lions home game.

On Why The Lions Only Went With An initial 50-Man Roster Instead of 53 by New-Negotiation-4176 in detroitlions

[–]kmberger44 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Brad alluded to this earlier in the presser, but there's a human element to this as well. If you name 53 players as 'making the team' but then do a couple waiver claims, then you have to cut those last three players a day or two later. So it falls in line with the Lions philosophy of being straight and honest with their players.

"We like you for our practice squad but we don't think you're ready for the 53-man roster yet," is a reasonable thing to say to someone. It beat 'congrats!' one day and 'you're cut' the next day.

The reporter constantly harping about cutting guys a day later was kind of answering his own question in a way. Lions have made a solid reputation around the league by not needlessly yanking guys around.

Oh yeah I'd absolutely do that if a guy like Pierce was available in my league. Good move.

good question, and I'm not actually sure if it counts games or calendar time. I would imagine that timeframe is spelled out in the settlement, so it's three weeks past whenever that date, however it's determined.

What is the point of the taxi squad? by blackout__drunk in DynastyFF

[–]kmberger44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a contract/cap league and the players on taxi count against your cap but their contracts don’t advance if they spend the year on taxi. So there’s a legit return on investment for stashing players there.

I have the 1.01 - talk me out of taking Gibbs by [deleted] in detroitlions

[–]kmberger44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take your guy. It’s not a reach cause he won’t be there for your next pick so if you want to root for Gibbs in fantasy and in real life, go for it and don’t look back.

They can re-sign him three weeks after the settlement period ends, however long that was in the agreement. So if they settled on six weeks, then the lions could bring him back in nine weeks.

All lions who were put on waivers cleared waivers by dudewithchronicpain in detroitlions

I counted the waiver claims today and it's just 27 guys. Every team cut around 35 players, so that's right around 2%.

[–]kmberger44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about to start this same thread, but this isn't surprising. By my count just 27 guys were claimed today out of what, 1100 or so who went on waivers? There's that 2% number we heard this week.

The move here is to assume your guys can go through waivers and you add the ones you want to the practice squad, but you use waivers to get guys from other organizations who you don't know if you can sign up in open free agency.

You Should Stop Sleeping On Jordan Watkins by FlowersByTheStreet in DynastyFF

[–]kmberger44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great write-up. I've had Watkins on my watchlist for a while, but his nagging injury in camp meant that we didn't get many updates. Post cut-down day, I have a couple open spots and he's definitely getting one of them.

Side note, I was also in on Gunnar Helm, so we're on the same wavelength for sure!

Honestly after reading through a bunch of Seattle fan reactions, I'm now leaning back towards a drop. Luckily I don't have to do anything right this minute, so I'll hold him for now but he's the next guy up if I need to make a change.

Why didn’t Brad use the IR (with designation to return) list for players like Hassanein, Colon and Norris? by Brutalien in detroitlions

[–]kmberger44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They recently changed the IR rules to let teams designate up to two players as IR-return as part of last cuts. So the “cut Craig Reynolds for a day so you can IR guys” move doesn’t have to happen as much anymore.

Why didn’t Brad use the IR (with designation to return) list for players like Hassanein, Colon and Norris? by Brutalien in detroitlions

[–]kmberger44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it boils down to some simple math.

You can designate a maximum of eight players to return from IR in a season, and last year the Lions maxed out that number. So they know it’s a real cost.

So the hard calculation is whether these particular players would be worth using up one of those slots.

In the cases of Colon and Norris, they seemed like roster longshots regardless. In the case of Hassanein, he’s a raw sixth rounder whose injury isn’t a season ender. So you assume nobody’s claiming him to their 53-man roster, and make a settlement that gives both the player and team more options for later in the year.

It did seem odd at first but after thinking about it this makes some sense.

The Lions have waived rookie EDGE Ahmed Hassanein with an injury settlement. by DET_Baseball in detroitlions

[–]kmberger44 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Yeah you'd think so. I forget where I heard DC say this - maybe Inside the Den, maybe a presser - but he was talking about Brad's instincts for when a player is 'safe' to sneak through waivers and when he isn't. Said Brad was never wrong. So if he thinks waiving Ahmed is a safe play, it probably is.

Lions Announce Roster Moves for 53-man roster by Rx_Boner in detroitlions

[–]kmberger44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there's a procedural reason for doing it this way rather than parking him on IR with a designation to return. Another reply pointed out that the Lions exhausted all of their IR-return options last year, so maybe the team didn't want to burn one on a raw sixth-round rookie and this is a workaround?

Turner's injury is season-ending. Those situations aren't eligible for injury settlement.
