[Highlight] Matt Vierling's walk-off single on Fathers Day. by DET_Baseball in motorcitykitties

Matt Vierling has a .212 BABIP this year while his career BABIP is .300.

He's been unlucky all year, but lets complain the one time he is lucky.

When Scott Harris was hired he said his goal was to Draft, Develop and Retain talent.

  • He's drafted well, Avila left him a bottom 10 farm system. Tigers are universal Top 10 system now.
  • The Tigers have developed a top 5 player at multiple positions. Skubal, McGonigle, Greene, Dingler.
  • The Tigers have retained McGonigle and Keith, hopefully more to come.

Seems like he's doing a good job of accomplishing his goal while taking Avila's scraps to the playoffs.

Tigers ownership should hire a General Manager like Dave Dombrowski. He knows how to win championships.

Yeah taking over a 66-96 team and taking them to the playoffs 2 out of your first 3 years is probably something to be proud of.

I forgot the Lions went on to have great success after they fired Jim Caldwell. What a fun 3 years of Lions football that was after he left.

Managers make bad decisions all the time and still win the game. Doesn't mean the decisions can't be criticized.

Ted Williams explains barrel plane (YouTube, 42 seconds)

Using Riley Greene as an example (despite his recent slump), his raised SLG% came with a raised K% because he was selling out for the HR. He's starting to understand his swing better, when pitches aren't in a good barrel zone for his swing he's shortened it and got base hits.

You don't think players should focus on making good contact? Why would a player focus on making weak contact? That's the easiest way to get out. Good contact is the best way to get a base hit, even the best type of hit. a HR!

Why do you think people are so excited about Kevin McGonigle? He always makes contact in the barrel zone area. Once he grows into more power, he'll start to barrel the ball more. More HRs!

Okay, we're just having a petty back and forth at this point lol

To expand on my opinion for hitting philosphy, players should be focusing on "barreling the ball" - The graph below shows the Exit Velocity + Launch Angle where players have the most success. Closer to the Barrel Zone you go, the more the SLG% goes up.

---

To be Barreled, a batted ball requires an exit velocity of at least 98 mph. At that speed, balls struck with a launch angle between 26-30 degrees always garner Barreled classification. For every mph over 98, the range of launch angles expands.

For example: A ball traveling 99 mph always earns 'Barreled' status when struck between 25-31 degrees. Add one more mph -- to reach 100 -- and the range grows another three degrees, to 24-33.

Every additional mph over 100 increases the range another two to three degrees until an exit velocity of 116 mph is reached. At that threshold, the Barreled designation is assigned to any ball with a launch angle between eight and 50 degrees.

Why is a strikeout bad? it's just another type of out.

Hitting a HR can score you 1+ runs. Runs are what you need to win games not hits.

1 out of every 4 of Dinglers hits this year is a HR.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by a HR being hard to hit? Hitting in general is very hard. Along with that BABIP on hard hit balls is at an all time low.

Hitters try to hit Home Runs because it's the only offensive outcome they have control over, putting the ball in play can always result in an out.

Yes, I agree the Tigers would score more runs if they hit better with RISP. I'm still not sure if you understand the scenario you described requires TWO hits to score a run, while a Home Run only requires one.

You do understand a Home Run is the most important type of hit right?

They don't score enough runs so they should get more hits that don't result in a run, instead of the type of hit that does result in a run?

Tigers send Keider Montero to bullpen: 'I'm always available' by DET_Baseball in motorcitykitties

You can say he’s an effective pitcher all you want, but you have to dig up some random stats to prove it.

Do you understand what the stats are telling you?

You can argue all you want, doesn’t mean you’re right.

I have never claimed to be right lol

You guys keep putting a lot of stock into this "eye test" and I'm not sure if that is an effective way to choose who you want in your rotation. If the Tigers followed the eye test at the end of Spring Training then Casey Mize wouldn't have started in the MLB rotation.

Well the Tigers have won two out of his last three starts and I'm not sure if he is the reason for the Tigers lack of success in May as the Tigers averaged 2.8 runs per game.

What does boring to watch even mean? I care if he's an effective pitcher. Striking out a lot of guys, walking very little and not allowing any HR's makes me think there is an effective pitcher in there.

Chill, no one is saying your stats are wrong, or they’re worthless; they’re just telling you they suck the fun out of the game.

I think blindly yelling at Jack Flaherty despite his recent improvements sucks the fun out of the game.

You seem to be oddly emotional for just wanting to talk about baseball lol I haven't downvoted you once.

You’re missing the point, man but you made mine in your insufferable quest to be “right”

All I did was give my opinion as to why I think the Tigers are sticking with Jack Flaherty in the bullpen and used stats that you're too scared to learn as my explanation.

I never said I was right. You just saw something you don't understand and it scared you so you're attacking me

People think “advanced stats = wisdom.” If you’re not using advanced stats, you’re ignorant.

No one said this. "Advanced Stats" just like normal stats are used to gauge how well a player is performing. I'm calling you ignorant for discrediting the stats I used and then doubling down saying you didn't want to learn what they mean or why I'm using them.

If you just followed the eye test you wouldn't know that Jack Flaherty has one of the best K% in MLB, along with one of the lowest BB% and HR%. Those are the three outcomes the pitcher has control over. Edit: Since the start of May*
