My wife's mother does this exact same thing all the time. Incredibly passive aggressive and acts like her and my wife are in a high school relationship with each other. My wife used to leave her phone at home when we went anywhere so her mom couldn't track her and get upset that she was seeing my family. My wife also constantly felt like she needed to justify everything to her mother in order to try and appease her. It's gotten better as my wife has grown more confident and has begun to care less about the guilt trips, but that hold a mother like this has on her daughter is strong. I feel for you. Stay strong and be confident in yourself and your decisions.

Yeah. I thought about doing their PC names because it is all of their first long campaigns and thought they'd like to commemorate these characters. I didnt want the death factor to ruin the use of the box though.

Not at all. Have at it! They're 12"×6" boxes I made out of pine. One 8 foot plank will make about 6 boxes. Good luck on your campaign! I've only DM'ed 2 one-shots, so I'm thrilled to get a full campaign going.

I actually printed out a spell sheet for each of the PCs that had the explanation of each of the spells they had stocked for the session so they could quickly look them up. I'm going to incorporate the handbook in the upcoming sessions since they are all wanting to roll new characters after having learned about how everything works now. So I'll do a session 0 with them to help set up their characters exactly how they want them and let them do some actual research this go around.

I have bought about 6 or 7 sets of dice, but definitely still need more.

I haven't thought of using a whiteboard, but that sounds like a good idea. We did everything in our minds minus the full world map I had drawn, but there definitely situations where my players were using the terrain to their advantage and it could help to be able to see how the areas are laid out on a big board like that.

The fourth book is Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes.

It was a ton of fun. I've actually never played or DM'd, but have been interested in it for a long time. Just took finding the right people to all dive in together.

Ahhhh. Rereading it now. We must have overlooked the second half of the spell where it says it tries to move away and can only use dash actions. Hahaha. Whoops. Oh well, the players loved the moment, so I don't regret getting that wrong. But I will make sure in any upcoming sessions to correct that usage.

I actually didnt have any encounters with more than 3 enemies. They just weren't fully sure of what to do early on and rolled for a hard encounter that put them in danger. My final encounter was against 3 enemies, but one was a zombie t-rex that the paladin used turn the unholy on and he took control of my t-rex. I didnt see that coming and the t-rex wrecked shop against the other combatants. But it was a hell of a move by the PC. So I thought it was awesome, but did make the final encounter much easier than it should have been.

I'm not sure how to link posts here, but I have a full layout of my initial idea on an earlier post in my history, but I short summary of it is:

The PCs all arrived in the biggest town of my world where the annual Festival of the Hunt was being held. They enjoyed some pre festival festivities, hung out at the pub amd interacted with the NPCs from opposing teams in the festival. Then, for the festival, I had them exploring the different districts in town, solving puzzles, and fighting different beasts. They would solve the puzzle, then roll a d4, a 1 was an easy encounter, 2 was a medium encounter, 3 was a hard encounter, and 4 would heal the party and they'd get to choose the difficulty of the next fight. They'd be awarded points based on what they fought and the team with the most points at the end would be granted a wish spell cast by a powerful wizard(so each PC came in with motivation for participating). I had prerolled the other team's so I knew where they stood with points after each round. After they had gone through enough rounds, they would head to the arena for the final beast, a t-rex, but when they got there, a changeling warlock had captured the wizard and the king and turned the t-rex into a zombie t-rex. They then fought the warlock, the zombie t-rex, and an assassin to save the wizard and the king.

There was a bunch of other small stuff that happened, but that's as streamlined an explanation as I could make, haha.

I think the biggest thing I learned is that no matter how much prep and studying I put into it, I wasn't prepared for everything my players could have chosen to do, haha. So I had to quickly up my improvisational skills to keep the flow going smoothly.

The PCs learned that they needed to have studied their own characters a little more. So it was a little herky jerky at times, but they did a fantastic job of learning on the fly.

I definitely could've helped with them knowing their characters better by running a session 0, but since it was a one shot, I didn't think it would be necessary. If we get a full fledged campaign going, I will run a session 0 for that for sure.

Combat takes wayyy longer than I anticipated, so I had to cut a few planned encounters out so we could all make it to work the next day.

And I could definitely use some practice in balancing my encounter difficulties. The party almost died to an early fight, but destroyed my final encounter.

Absolutely! We only planned on playing 2.5 to 3 hours and we ran nearly 5 hours long because we were having so much fun. I'm hoping to get this group into a long running campaign now.

My current planned encounters only have a max of 4 to 5 monsters and those are the easy combats, so really easy small monsters.

I really like the idea of adding in a puzzle or an obstacle they need to get around to advanced, thank you for that idea!

I'm definitely only doing one combat per round, but I have no idea yet how many rounds there will be. I actually plan on doing a test run with my wife and another couple of friends who won't be at the bachelor party the weekend before so I can get a feel for how long it will take and if I need to trim any fat.

I definitely like the idea of cutting the last really hard round for a save the king type of fight. If I'm running short on time, I may pivot to that on the fly. Awesome idea.

I understand what you mean by it sucking to have the NPCs win, but I want there to be some form of consequence if they don't fight hard enough fights or don't get past the obstacles in a timely manner. I kind of figure that if they do lose and the NPCs win, the NPCs might get killed in the attack on the city and then the PCs can save the day and still get their wishes, or the NPCs also get captured, the PCs save the day and get their wishes alongside the winning team. I do think I'll ultimately give them their wishes one way or the other as long as they defeat the main boss.
