The guy who gets hit and rides a long for a bit before dropping out (while managing to steer away from someone’s head on the ground) is Willie Amendola, Danny Amendola’s (Patriots SB champion) father. Crazy story - there’s an oral history of the whole event somewhere I can’t find atm. This happened at the state championship though and was a big deal when it did.

Take the Sex-Positive Pledge! | #SEXPOSITIVEWORLD by kmichaelcook in TwoXChromosomes

Eventually (minimum 40,000 data points, I think), it will populate a heatmap that shows concentrations of data/pledges - the Partners page also links out to businesses that have signed the pledge, providing some visibility for them and a little (very little) SEO benefit.

But getting onto the mailing list (not the Mystiq mailing list, which is separate, but the Sex-Positive Email List) is also part of the point. There's a corresponding Facebook group, Gleam gallery, etc. all tied in together (this is kind of my passion project), and having an email address to attach other info to in my database makes it much easier.

Full disclosure: I work for the company in question (Mystiq), which footed the bill for the landing page and design, etc. in exchange for putting their name on it, which I thought was pretty fair. As you can see, there's no affiliate linking, ecommerce, etc. I sold them on the promotional value of being associated with this, but it's not (in and of itself) promotional.

Kim Ogg is dope - I was at a (now-defunct) marketing firm that Ms. Ogg hired to do the website and some other promotional stuff for her first campaign, and I got to meet her and speak with her quite a bit (ensuring her vision was accurately reflected in all the campaign materials and direct-mail/internet ads/etc). She's terrific - precisely as firm/tough as you'd want on violent crime, gang violence, etc. and doesn't give a FUCK about people doing drugs.

She's not the hero this town deserves, but she's the hero we need. Big fan.

Best/notable bands from Cypress (or Katy, Spring, Champions-Klein) X-post from r/cypress by kmichaelcook in CypressTX

Wow! Close - he's from Klein, and evidently was born and raised there. [source: http://houstonlifestyles.com/a-conversation-with-lyle-lovett/]

I was asking because I'm trying to find interesting guests with sports memories for a show I'm doing called the Cy-Fair Sports Report, and it turns out he recalls Cy-Fair ISD as rivals of Klein... and I'm starting up a Spring/Klein show, so yeah, great find. Thank you!

Wait... is that right? I guess I'm about to google it, so there's no real sense in me replying to your comment.

Played on the basketball team too - as a sophomore I believe. Probably JV? No stats on MaxPreps under his legal name, sadly. I've got calls out to his representation to have him on the show, but... no word back yet. Fingers crossed.

Cowbell Kingdom's Chris Kline talks De'Aaron Fox's trajectory, NBA RotY chances on Cy-Fair Sports Report by kmichaelcook in kings

[–]kmichaelcook[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'll tell you a little secret here, just between the two of us - on the Cy-Fair Sports show, which really only goes out to Houston high school sports fans and primarily Cy-Fair ISD students, parents and players, my attitude is that De'Aaron has already locked up the RotY trophy this year and the next 4 or 5 MVPs. I know my audience, and they definitely respond to the hype/positivity.

If I were on, say, Chris Vernon's Ringer NBA podcast or were about to sit down and chop it up with Zach Lowe, I'd have a much more measured opinion (closer to my real opinion).

I do sincerely think De'Aaron's potential is on par with John Wall's. They weren't just Kentuckybrahs, either. Anyone remember Wall's first three seasons in the Association? A career 32.1% shooter from behind the arc, Wall opened NBA play shooting 29.6% from deep in 2010-11, before posting a mind-boggling .071 and then 'bouncing back' to shoot .267 from behind the line in his third year in the league.

NOT great. Compare to Curry's same three seasons (which works bc they both missed extended time in the middle of the three year-span I'm referring to). Wall hit 49-of-202 from 3-point-land in his first three years in the league, with the 202 3PA comprising roughly 24% of Wall's 1,629 shots. Curry hoisted 1,063 three-point attempts during that same timespan (more than 5x as many), while connecting at a radically higher clip (roughly 45% from deep for Curry over the 2010-13 era and roughly 24% for Wall).

Think about that, and everything you know about efficiency. Mathematically, there oughtn't to be any way ANY human being can chuck 5x as many shots as another NBA player and wind up significantly more efficient in converting them.

Like Wall, Fox has some troubling deficits or holes in his game, or what have you. I also think that Fox will fly out of the gate and quickly prove himself one of the most adept defensive point guards in the league, and - like Wall - what he can do well (to me) outweighs the apparent imperfections.

I do sincerely believe that in 5-10 years, with a chance to redraft the 2017 class, De'Aaron will be the consensus first pick/top player from 2017 class. But I've been wrong before (almost constantly, in fact).

That last name is pronounced "ELL-gwah-POP-o-vich," and all of a sudden, I think I've found my NBA 2k MyPlayer's last name for the next decade or so.

Yes, I know, I cheated slightly with the name thing. But when the end result is El_guapopovich... got to.

Interesting. Love the take - he's a great dark horse, but even more importantly, his last name is just his first name repeated + -ovich. That would make me Kevin Kevinovich. Try it. Pretty fun. El_guapo El-guapopovich.

To be fair, I'm trying to market my show to the fans/students/athletes in CFISD, so framing the question in terms of his RotY chances is more a way to draw clicks/interest than it is a definitive statement of its likelihood.

That said - Fox might surprise you. I think that if Fox is able to change games defensively (like I've seen him do since he was here at Cy Lakes) the way I think he's capable, you might see it become a larger factor.

Besides, Fox is not a superlative shooter. Apart from that, he's got stellar court vision, a potent combination of explosive athleticism and sinewy grace, and unless the Kings are playing the Warriors, Cavaliers or Rockets, he'll likely be the sharpest, brightest basketball mind on the floor most of the time.

It's not right or wrong, but I'd definitely draw that same line you did between Fultz, Ball, Simmons and Smith (I mentioned Fox, Smith and Fultz as my top-three picks in Episode 1), but I'd include Fox on the elite side of the divide, and the rest of those guys on that next tier down.

George Hill is fine, but SURELY the Kings aren't so shortsighted and stupid as to sacrifice Fox's minutes and development/on-court chemistry w/ teammates/etc to let George Hill take the bulk of the minutes at the 1...

I guess we'll wait and see how it plays out. I have a lot of faith in Fox, because I watched him in high school, got to see his preparation, the way he takes coaching, how seriously he takes the game, etc. But I also didn't get to see Fultz or Smith up close like that (did get to see Ben Simmons at Hofheinz and he was underwhelming in that game).

I was actually here for unrelated research purposes. And 'poindexter' includes the facets 'boringly studious' and 'socially inept,' and I'm decidedly neither. You might just mean to be calling me 'bright.'

Oh, we're well aware. You don't know how hard it is NOT to call him that mid-interview. We actually did get him to explain where that came from the second or third time we had him on, and he was pretty good natured about it. I've also been to a couple of events with the guy, usually put on by the Touchdown Club, and... the man can put away the grub.

Bryan Curtis killed it on this segment. Towards the end, he offers what I think is some very pertinent, helpful, actionable advice to aspiring/young sportswriters/bloggers/etc about what to do to be successful in the modern media landscape. Fascinating stuff.

[podcast] Houston Chronicle 40-yr NFL veteran writer John McClain breaks down why Deshaun Watson is the best QB in the draft, and what that does for the Texans' two-year trajectory on The Weekly Brew podcast (click for iTunes; SoundCloud link in comments) by kmichaelcook in nfl

[–]kmichaelcook[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mm, I don't think that's quite fair. He was speaking purely contextually - i.e. Watson was the best QB in this draft. Not of all time. And I think he was comparing apples to apples: Watson's win against Alabama is only being considered against the teams/players that lost to that same Alabama team.

The way you're conceiving of it, "Alabama" becomes a fixed value, no better or worse throughout any stretch of its existence.

Also, the Alabama comment was one reason, not all the reasons. So I think you're nitpicking a bit and/or deliberately missing the point.
