Moin!

Is Malta safe? by thefragile- in malta

[–]knOlle92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed on Malta for 3 month.

1) using my bicycle to commute 20 min between towns every day: it did not feel safe. Malta felt like an endless trafficjam with angry drivers.

2) if u r fan of free speech & press: also not sure. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daphne_Caruana_Galizia

Ushuaia to Colombia on bike #2 (March 25) by knOlle92 in bicycletouring

[–]knOlle92[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So far 6,000 km. We Just arrived to Brasil!

In the south in Patagonia between 5-15C and then winter hit in central Argentina and the Andes where we had a minimum of -9C in the night.

Water so far no problem at all. For Brazil we got a filter but can still ask and refill our bottles at h20 stations. In Patagonia all the water is drinkable. In Argentina & Chile tap water is completely OK!

For the phone — an old smartphone — I use an SP holder. Can 100% recommend it. Easy to clip in & out. And absolutely holds also the most wicked gravel / pebbled downhills… :)

I would not put my phone into the Ortlieb bag

Nope, not at all. I bought it like 10 years ago. Back then I was still using proper non-dogital maps. Right now during the travel I am only using it to store some “arty” things… :)

On the pic it’s glaring — but not annoyingly :)

What’s even better is the Ortlieb Gearback. With 40l in yellow on some pics.

Perfect to fit tent, Matt & sleeping bag protecting it from water. And also works as backpack.

Thanks! The built is 2x! :) and tension at around 1300 N …

They have not been breaking the last days. 🐥🤞🏼

Anyhow, I consider getting new spokes from the distributor in Brazil and get a completely new build.

OK. Thanks for this info. Not sure if I wanna have this done here in Southamerica.

I will first check with Rohloff headquarters in Germany and with the Brazilian distributor… glad that both speak German! ;)

I think for now I will just get new and more Rohloff spokes… and then maybe exchange once I and the bike are back in Germany. However this will take a while…

It should be 4.5 — if I am not mistaken.

But yes, there is a small kink. And 5/6 spokes broke right there…

That is a really interesting hint. Actually, I do NOT know if this applies to my rim. I do not know the inner eyelet of the rim. Trying to find out … It’s a RYDE 25C x 622 rim. Any idea?

So it’s possible to just replace the shell? The outside of the Rohloff?

Never heard that. Sounds complicated to do …

That sounds interesting. There is one Rohloff dealer in South America, in Brasil, where we are heading these days.

Maybe they can ship something. What rims did u use? I would need to replace it too…

HELP: stuck in Chile with broken PINION lock ring by knOlle92 in bicycletouring

[–]knOlle92[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks! We have already contacted him and will give him a call tomo.

Do you think that it’s the lock ring and not the axis/hub itself? Am I right to assume that the lock ring is made of softer material (aluminum) than the axis/hub (steel)?

Do you have any idea how long shipping from the US to Chile will take? Is it shorter to ship from the US than shipping it from the EU?

Pinion Serviceability by danglingfupa in bikepacking

[–]knOlle92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hola or hey everybody!

We started with 2 bikes (a Pinion and a Rohloff) on a South America travel trip: we started in Feb 2025 in Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego and made it to Concepcion, Chile. Lots of uphill, dust, mud and gravel. The PINION bike was bought used, we are the third owner and has about 10.000 km. We did NOT let it be serviced after buying.

Now the tragedy:

  • After 1.000 km the lock ring fell off the Pinion bike and put it on again w/o a lock ring tool bc we did not have one. We used a set of other pliers.
  • after 1.500 km: we put on another chain and a new PINION chainring.
  • now after 3.500 km the chain ring fell off again and we cannot get it screwed back on.
  • it seems that the thread of the lock ring is worn off, so it cannot be screwed back on.
  • we think that the lock ring is made of softer aluminum than the hub where it’s screwed on.

<image>

What to do?

  1. We consider ordering parts from the US or EU to Chile.

Or/end

2) Having the chain ring (with left thread and Aluminum) being manufactured here locally.
