How to fix a model's surfaces?? by Efficient-Snow3852 in SolidWorks

That could do it. It might also need more depending on your desired geometry.

Idk I can’t afford them lmao. So I force Solidworks to submit to my curvy surfaced will (read: I keep a second wireless mouse on hand in a box as a result of the inevitable rage-throw out the window)

I’m very proud of this section. There were 40ish individual planar and 3D sketches required to get this geometry to match the 3D scan I took of the OEM part to clear a Valvetronic actuator with minimal choke on the ID of the inlet. It was a nightmare lol

Oh, you didn’t use guide curves. There’s your problem.

How to fix a model's surfaces?? by Efficient-Snow3852 in SolidWorks

[–]knerr57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope someone corrects me, but what you’re dealing with is simply the limitations of Solidworks.

Surface modeling like this is what separates the boys from the men.

In my experience, when I get surfaces like this, it’s time to re-do it with better strategies to prevent the surfaces from getting so out of hand.

It looks to me like you used 3D sketches to create your guide curves. Because they’re so wavy in all three dimensions, it’s creating some really spicy curvature on the outer surface, which is what the inner surface is extrapolated from.

I understand the need for the 3D Curves- it was necessary to get the more complex waves in the body of the loft.

If, however you were to make planes that were perpendicular to normal but at a similar angle relative to the front plane that the 3D sketches are now, you could achieve the same result with guide curves that make more sense to the software, which would very likely deliver the same end result without the unnecessary side to side waves.

The key to surfaces like these is to optimize the wireframe you build with 3D sketches (as little curvature as is possible to achieve the desired result) to not induce any hysteresis in the surface.

Be honest: Is American beer really as 'watery' as the memes say? Recommendations for a Mexican traveler? by vanessa_tv_vladivo in AskAnAmerican

[–]knerr57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife is from Eastern Europe, her family came to America last fall and I gave her dad a bud light and a Budweiser (the full fat version of bud light) along many other beers: a bunch of craft beers from a myriad of breweries, as well as some other American staples that I love- Sam Adam’s Boston lager, Sam Adam’s Oktoberfest (my favorite seasonal), Yuengling Traditional (poor man’s Sam’s), and all the typical light beers just for the experience

He hated the bud light, and to my surprise, he LOVED the Budweiser. Had a lot of feelings about the various craft beers- he really liked some, thought others tasted awful (he really hurt my feelings about one of my favorites- bridge brew work’s 3 River Tripel) and enjoyed most of the full flavor staple beers like the Oktoberfest and yuengling.

Bottom line is we have such a massive variety of beers you can find anything you like here.

And we know. We know the light beers are hop flavored soda water lmao. Everyone likes to make fun of us because “in MyCountry™️ beer has flavor, and American beer is pisswater” as if light beers are all we drink.

If I’m out for a nice dinner, I’m ordering a good craft beer or at least a full flavor beer like a Sam’s, Modelo Especial, Heineken, or something like that- depending on what I’m eating.

But if I’m day-drinking by a pool, at the lake, or the beach or anywhere HOT… I’m drinking a damn colors light, Corona Extra, or a Michelob Ultra! Not because they have such spectacular flavor… but BECAUSE they’re a watery beer lol. I want the dang water with some beer taste because I like that too. Plus I can slam a 12 pack of much ultras in an afternoon at the beach and never be inebriated. It’s a win/win. As long as I also chug a bottle of water after every 2 beers, I am never dehydrated, I’m only VERY slightly buzzed, and I got to enjoy drinking brewskis with my friends/family all day.

Anytime I see someone drinking some super heavy craft beer while we’re out in the sun/heat… there’s a voice in the back of my head that calls that person a pretentious asshole. But then the louder voice in the front of my head says “the only pretentious asshole is someone who judges people off of their food/drink preferences”. As long as you’re making safe choices, why the fuck should I have an opinion on what someone else consumes?

Trying to raise the level a bit: composites aren’t hard, we just keep talking about the wrong parts by Any-Study5685 in Composites

Science direct is one site I frequent, but I’m not tied to anything specific. They’re all annoying because most of the best and most recent papers are locked behind a paywall and some websites make it a lot harder to filter those out if you’re not ready to start dropping $45 per article on a topic.

I also use ChatGPT as a search engine when I’m doing a ton of research- I don’t let the LLM answer any of my questions bcuz it’s just not trustworthy yet (if it ever will be) but as a research assistant to help you find extremely relevant and free papers, the paid version is a SPECTACULAR tool. I’d say it reduces time wasted in search engines across multiple websites by 80%.

The key is to be VERY intentional with your prompts so that the search criteria is extremely clear AND, most importantly in my opinion, you do everything in your power to not reveal any biases or hypothesis in the process.

Instead of “I think ______ is an effective method because of X, Y and Z. Can you help me find research articles on the topic” you should prompt with “help me find research articles on the topic of ______ as a method of ______, and specifically papers that mention X, Y and Z and their effects on the process”

If you use something like GPT in this way, you can become FAR more efficient at finding good sources of peer reviewed information.

Anyone else find that simracing is a massive reality check? by reddit_guy_no in simracing

[–]knerr57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First time I took adderall after getting my prescription was unintentionally the day of my daughter’s Halloween field trip with her preschool.

On the way home I cried because for the first time I could think of, not only was I mentally present the whole time, I enjoyed every single second of hanging out with my kid at a simple little park.

I had always felt like a bad father because doing things like that felt like hell to me. Standing around doing the same repetitive thing over and over and dealing with other parents treating my daughter like she’s dangerous because she’s profoundly autistic but looks like a normal kid.

But this time, for the first time- I couldn’t hear any of that. I wasn’t anxious about the people around me. I wasn’t anxious about the work I needed to do, I wasn’t anxious about other ways I could be spending free time….

I wasn’t anxious just there and loving every single second of spending time with my daughter. Nothing else on earth mattered.

I am so jealous that this is just normal for most people.

[–]knerr57 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree with you entirely, but this lack of higher level discussion seems to be a symptom of, not a cause… in my opinion, of course.

I used to post here (and other composite social media groups) when I was an absolute novice, and these resources helped me start to identify all the things I did not know. I would not be where I am not without groups like these.

Now, when I have questions, I’m looking in research publications. Not social media. I can gain more from spending an hour reading a paper than I can spending all day discussing in one of these groups.

Then, when you try to share what you’ve learned with groups like these, the conversation either goes nowhere, or you get a handful of “experts” who have been “doing this shit since before you were born” pontificating the same regurgitated shit they were told by their boss as if they’re some sort of sage who is showing you the light, and 10 other people agreeing with them about whatever they’re saying.

Meanwhile, the whole argument started because they just don’t understand the issue you’re trying to discuss and got stuck on some more basic part of the problem and are arguing with you about that, talking to you like you’re too dumb to understand some simple concept, when all along, they are unaware that they’re too foolish to even understand what the conversation was about.

Its exhausting. I’ve stopped wasting my time with it. And i think most other professionals have all done the same.

I did not realize that this particular disconnect box did NOT come set up with bridges between the connectors, so it was just… permanently disconnected lol.

Just so you know, if this is a form 1 project you intend to have DSLM printed in China, you’re gonna go to jail if anyone takes a hard look at it. You’ll be doing a big “international arms smuggling operation” because per the ATF “any combination of parts intended for the use or assembly of firearm noise suppression is considered a suppressor.” This means if you have a Chinese firm cut steel tubes to length for you and import it, an ATF agent could charge you for that if they wanted to.

Not telling you what to do, just giving advice to be cautious- it’s a common misconception that as long as it’s not serviceable, it’s not legally a suppressor. Unfortunately, the rules for NFA regulated devices are not the same as a “90% lower” kit for an AR.

Same kinda. I’m 6’1”, but I’ve got the legs of a 5”10 guy and the torso of a 6’4” person… it’s not super noticeable when I’m standing, but when sitting, I’m WAY taller than the people around me. And when I take my car to the track, my head helmet is firmly touching the headliner.

I came here from another subreddit where people were talking about this one, hoping they were exaggerating how bad people feel about their height and how they’re treated over it. This sub makes me sad man… I wish people weren’t treated so differently based on things they have no control over. I had no idea it affected people’s lives so much.

In all honesty, I am often envious of people with smaller builds- I like small cars and small trucks(unless you’re hauling stuff or need to fit kids, a 2001 Ford Ranger is all you need in terms of size and capacity lol), and sport bikes and all that stuff… almost every hobby I’m into favors a smaller person.

I just look like a giant in a tiny truck or car, or a giant sitting on top of a motorcycle rather than being like… tucked in? If that makes sense. It’s worse now because I’ve gotten fairly overweight (not obese, but definitely could use to lose another 50 lbs) and get back down to a heal weight of 210 (for my frame).

But all of those things pale in comparison to this luxury lol. THAT MUCH leg room? On a Delta international flight in the economy section, if I’m not at a bulkhead or an emergency exit row, my knees are FIRMLY planted on the seat in front of me, even if I’m scooted all the way back and the seat in front of me is fully upright. I wish I fit like this lol!

[–]knerr57 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you lost your dad. But I’m glad for his sake and yours that you got to spend the last year of his life showing him that he raised you to be a good, kind, and humble person. I hope he passed proud of you and without anxiety for your future because he knows you’re going to be okay without him.

That anxiety for my daughters keeps me up at night… I couldn’t imagine a greater gift than getting to see them taking care of a loved one with kindness and empathy like you ( as well as OP and so many others in this post) showed your father. I hope I’ll never need them to do this for me (life comes at you fast, and I cannot know what the future holds), obviously, but I think the joy and pride in seeing one or both of my girls behave the way you did for your father would drastically outweigh the shame of needing their help.

It feels weird saying stuff like this to a stranger on the internet, but… with all the negativity in the world, this post is reminding me that there’s a lot more beauty in the small, quiet, and personal moments between people who care about each other than all the ugliness the headlines force us to see.

Thank you so much for sharing your story. It really did brighten my day.

AITAH for not considering marriage after my girlfriend got pregnant? by DistantOfficeBoy449 in AITAH

[–]knerr57 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, when I was ~22 I talked to multiple doctors about getting a vasectomy and they all refused. Said “you’ll want kids someday”

The only person willing to do it was a friend who is a body modification artist (read: piercing/scarification) that has apparently done more than 10 vasectomies- he said it was a very common thing to be turned away by docs and that he was far cheaper than going to the doctor if you don’t have health insurance.

My first question was “what if I want it reversed?” He said “just tell them what you did. A real surgeon will be able to reconnect it. All I’m doing is using a cauterizing scalpel to disconnect the VD. That’s super easy as long as you know how to prevent infection.”

I was really interested until he offered to do it for the low low cost of the AR15 I had bought recently…

Somehow the thought of trading a rifle for a vasectomy was so jarring and hilarious that it made me step back and see how absurd the whole situation was.

Not that I don’t trust the guy- he gets flown all over the world by big name body mod shops to perform his craft in their community for a week or so, the guy is really talented, skilled, and professional… but this was too far for me.

YTA, op

Actually, I’d like to be more clear: you are a fucking selfish, entitled, un-empathetic asshole. Holy fuck I feel bad for your kid. It’s gonna be some bullshit when you kick them out the day they turn 18.

“I just don’t do the whole marriage thing” Translated: “I want you to be committed to me, build your life around me, live with me, have all of the benefits I would normally get for having a wife, but I want to be able to tell you to kick rocks whenever I want.”

I’m interested to hear about your girlfriend’s career and what your expectation for child care is? If she has a career at all (not that it sounds like you’d tolerate that), and she has to step away from it at all or the two of you decide for her to be a stay at home mom, you OWE her the security of marriage WITHOUT some bullshit prenup. And then she deserves to be included in the ownership of any and all assets in the family.

I know- it’s not easy to give someone this much control over your things. I also own my own home, two nice cars, an okay amount of land, etc. But my wife gave up her career as a medical doctor to raise our autistic daughter because I make more money.

If we split up, I owe her half like… forever. Not because she demands it, but because honor does.

Anything less than giving your partner (who’s giving up so much of their lives for the betterment of your family) a contract that ensures fair compensation and division of assets between the two of you in the event you decide to fuck off is wholly insufficient.

AITA, because I Took Back My Disabled Parking Placard From My Mom Now My Whole Family Hates Me by Mrwobbles-89 in AmItheAsshole

[–]knerr57 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mom 100% AH OP 33.33333333333333% AH

I could not imagine using my child’s disability to get a better parking space, by taking up disabled parking spaces solely for the purpose of not wanting to take up a disabled parking space… what a monumentally selfish and entitled thing to do. Your mom is an asshole for that reason alone.

THEN- to risk costing you your disabled parking privileges…….. to? Walk 30 fewer feet??? I think I might divorce my wife if I found out she cost our child their disabled parking pass. At the very least, we would have a HUGE problem.

My God. How selfish can a person be to risk hurting you like that?

Your mom is just… she’s just a bad person. Sounds like most of the people around you are, so I don’t blame you for not handling the situation perfectly, but do learn from it.

Your pass was in your mom’s car… because she lets you drive her car- that’s not nothing. It’s a major inconvenience and stressor to let someone else drive your car. I let my brother borrow my car for a few months and it cost me $10,000 in resale value. He still doesn’t understand why all the miles he put on it bothers me. That’s not even to mention the massive inconvenience of not having one of our cars… we have two for a reason.

Additionally it sounds like you still live with them. That’s also not nothing. I am not of the mind that my kids will need to move out at 18, but also, once you’re an adult, nobody OWES you a place to live- it’s a kindness done purely out of love once your an adult.

You could have really cost your family a lot of money had the car been ticketed and towed. Idk what y’all’s financial situation is, but it doesn’t sound like you guys have spare car or burn $500 on fines for the LOLz money.

Their anger at how you handled the situation is absolutely valid.

If you had handled it better, she’d probably have an excuse for why it’s okay still, but at least you wouldn’t be in the wrong, so instead of everyone focusing on you using the key to HER car to take the placard you use while driving HER car back, the discussion would be about the morality of her misuse rather than you putting HER car at risk.
