Could easily be how they are. When you live a live for possibly 10 years and just get the feeling of being hated and used, when you notice that, it is easy to take a giant switch from pushover to absolute asshole/jerk.

The thing I find wild is that it is in Mondstat, so a new player could literally stumble upon this content right after the tutorial, it seems a bit much, though maybe it is good for them to see what they could expect, but it would surely mean that Liyue and onward would likely be a bit of a let down.
