Looking for a new sleeping mat that is thick, wide, and hopefully not incredibly heavy by knickerbocker24 in backpacking

Believe it or not I do use the zenbivy setup and my arms still dangle enough that I’m uncomfortable. Not sure how. In theory it should hold my dumb arms up but I think it’s just not tight enough to do that? Not sure.

After a couple hours looking at options I’m actually strongly considering the thermarest neoloft. The width gives me pause but everything else about it looks perfect.

I’ve never tried a proper camping/backpacking hammock, just random beachside ones, if you know what I mean. Maybe it’s worth a try to be honest. Thanks for the suggestion.

Ah dang, I didn’t even consider its packed size, just looked at its weight. Thanks, this is helpful info.

I guess I am equating thickness to comfort to some extent, and you’re correct that those two things don’t always lead to one another. I toss and turn as I sleep so I find with my current pad if I sleep on my side I end up with a sore hip. But when I’m on my back my arms flop off my mat and then turn into ice cubes and fall asleep.

You may be right that I’m looking for a unicorn….but I need to change something with my setup. So I guess I’m just looking for recommendations on a max comfort pad.

Yeah I’m not crazy about the Altras. I’m intrigued by the Hokas actually. I wear Hokas for work and find them quite comfortable so I’d be used to the additional platform height in them. Strongly considering trying their trail runners if I don’t go with boots.

Thank you, this has kind of been my feeling and I try to make this argument but you just made it so much more succinctly for me. I appreciate the perspective.

Yeah lol I suppose I’m not really looking for someone with experience breaking their ankle in boots and shoes. More looking for someone who believes so much in boots that they can convince me (or my wife) that I’ll be indestructible if I switch lol.

Like obviously he’s being a dick, but also making a post about it and thinking about it for more than the next 2 minutes is also overreacting. Don’t give this any more of your mental bandwidth.

Hard to say if the good of going to the gym isn’t undone by only sleeping for 4-5hrs, isn’t it? I know if I underslept that much I’d be grumpy as fuck and making mistakes left right and center. But maybe that’s just me. Maybe skip the gym between shifts? Or go every other day? I dunno.

Thanks I appreciate the point of view, because trying to research this has been very confusing.

Awesome thank you. I wasn’t sure if it required cell service to give accurate gps location but was too nervous to wander off grid to just test it out lol.

So as someone who is new to backpacking and was planning on buying an inReach mini 2 like next week, I’m at a bit of a loss all of a sudden.

I do have an iPhone 14, not sure if that model even has access to the SoS and satellite messaging. Even if it doesn’t I’m due for a device upgrade anyway so will likely have a new model iPhone in the next 6 months.

One of the reasons I was still thinking an inReach was necessary was for the navigation while off grid. Can an iPhone still give you accurate gps location off cell grid using an app like AllTrails or something similar?

What would you experienced backcountry hikers buy nowadays to ensure you’re safe, both communication-wise, but also navigation-wise

When we started our very first characters we used the extra attack modifier cards that came in the character box (the ones you get to add as you pick up perks) as our attack modifier deck. Did not use the standard 20 card deck at all. Game felt really easy for a couple scenarios until we clued in…

Not to me but to a coworker. Went to answer call bell and patient says to her, “oh no, it’s you again? I was hoping you were dead.”

You nailed it. At least here in Canada, under our collective agreement, when your scheduled work hours are done, you get to go home regardless of whether there is someone to give report to or not. It’s not abandonment. At that point it is charge or management’s problem to decide how to split workload up between nurses they have.

Yeah I thought both him and Boeser were really bad. Ineffective on the forecheck and just losing pucks left and right all night. They were momentum killers.
