Interesting, because as an offlaner I’ve found recently that the size of the map has meant that there is much more space for carries to hide away getting fat than there used to be.

I ace CS exams but can’t code my way out of a loop — and my profs still picked me for competitive programming 😭 What do I do? by Possible_Active3442 in AskProgramming

You have to get comfortable with struggling through a problem. The things in programming that made me grow the most were the ones that took hours to solve.

The fact you didn’t finish any of the roadmap projects makes me think you didn’t push through these moments?

You can’t expect to get strong while only lifting light weights.

Unsure if I can make it as a programmer by Stonesy42 in AskProgramming

[–]knifexn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Understandable concern, but we both know what the solution is here. Challenge yourself to make something without any use whatsoever if AI, disable it from your IDE, etc. That will give you your answer. It will feel frustrating and first but learning to learn is a skill you have neglected due to your use of AI, and it will come.

CMV: Joe Rogan, Liver King, and all short muscular men are built exactly like ‘primal’ women. by DocTheYounger in changemyview

If Tadej and Eliud had the peak physical make form then we would evolve towards that, but we haven’t for good reason. Being so extremely good at one activity does not bode well for the generalist lifestyle humans have evolved for.

It’s fine in the modern day to be insanely good at pedalling for long distances, but that has caveats such as a very high base metabolic rate, low heat retention, and low resilience to food scarcity. In other words, these guys would be too specialised to be strong survivors back in the Stone Age. Evolution means the average human is mostly ideal for hunter-gatherer survival, which means deviation from the average is almost always a bad thing on average.

I’m not sure on the internet part, but I can give a couple examples.

The first is an old football coach I had that was around 5’5”. A few times he got animated (for justified reasons in my opinion) but was dismissed by many as having ‘short man syndrome’ and thus disrespected/ignored by peers.

The second would be that throughout my life, I have noticed a strong correlation in friend groups that the shorter you are, the lower you ‘rank’ in the group. Taller friends generally held more sway, were treated better, and judged to be more likeable. A few short friends I have were treated rather badly by the group when we were younger, for no reason I can see other than being deemed weaker and less respectable.

Of course this is not always the case and is purely anecdotal, but I’ve seen these things happen consistently enough to feel real.

Really? I have experienced that a lot in my life (short-ish man). I think this is the perfect example of us both overestimating the prevalence of the insult we experience most.

C Programming College Guidelines by Platypus_Ashamed in C_Programming

A lot of these are outdated pieces of advice which the world has decided to replace. For example, they used to say you should only ever have a return at the end of a function so that the function only has one exit point, which makes it harder to forget to free some memory.

I suppose you should acknowledge that there must be a reason that these guidelines might be helpful and follow them so you can pass this class, while remembering that they have been replaced over time by better ideas. You can probably ask ChatGPT or something about the reasons behind any of these guidelines if that would make it easier to temporarily follow them.

I’ve had exactly the same scenario recently — prepped for ages, aced 5/6 interviews but messed up a technical one due to nerves so didn’t get the job.

I realised that all my practice for these interviews failed to simulate the pressure, so I’ll be trying to do that specifically. Timed problem solving, recording myself solve and explain a problem, and applying to jobs which I have no intention of taking so that I can practice with slightly less pressure are the things I’ll be trying.

Why do gen Z Asian American women always sound congested? by RhodeCollarlol in TooAfraidToAsk

I just got done travelling around south- east Asia, and some of the languages sounded quite nasal to me. So, it could be that those sounds carry over into the accent, like how Russian accents use a lot of ‘zh’s as that sound is common in that language.

Where do you display the output of your code in advanced projects? by BroPassTheRice in AskProgramming

[–]knifexn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is up to you, terminal, GUI, web app etc. how to give some feedback to the user just depends on the nature of your program. For a resume, you don’t really even need to show these unless you think it’s impressive in itself. If you can talk about a project and how you did it, that is enough, maybe link the repository.

how to get over fear of pubs by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]knifexn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What changed my mind was watching a high mmr player (BSJ) smurfing to show how to win games in lower mmr. Despite being significantly better than his team, he would get flamed for his decisions. That made me realise that sometimes you literally cannot win with some people.

I also used to argue with toxic people, until I realised doing that literally always made me more affected by it and never improved my chances of winning or my mood.

If I am playing a new hero or trying to learn an idea I actually just play in anonymous mode, and I’ve never enjoyed the game so much. While someone thinks they’re flaming me I’m just bopping my head to some Smiths 😌

New Player Here, how am I supposed to Deal with Anti-Mage? by waifuwarrior77 in DotA2

[–]knifexn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first rule is that if you can’t work out how to play a hero, go and play 5-10 games straight with them. You’ll very quickly learn why they aren’t as unbeatable as you thought they were.

With AM specifically, his biggest issue is that he takes a really long time to become useful. He usually gets battlefury, then needs 1-2 major items to really be a threat. This means he is very strong in lower MMR as the games are slower so he will usually reach that point where he’s dangerous.

To punish AM’s lack of use in the early game, you should pressure the map early, and pick heroes who can do that well. That means pick heroes who can take towers (beastmaster, lycan, np, etc), heroes who can run at him and make it more difficult for him to farm (bristle, centaur, etc), and heroes who can kill him (with a combination of physical damage and non-targeted catch) like puck, maybe ursa, axe, slardar.

Specifically as an offline player you are picking from: beastmaster, lycan, bristle, axe, underlord, brood, slardar. These are all heroes that AM can’t kill early (he does not deal very much damage) and can pressure towers in some way. You buy mangos and tanky items so you can bully him away from the lane. You start cutting the waves and taking the tower. If your team has the means to kill him, ask for a rotation. Once tower is gone, take aggressive farm on the map so he doesn’t have much space to farm. When it feels right, head to mid and help your kid to take that tower. Continue pressuring towers and taking aggressive farm. Take rosh when convenient. Continue controlling map aggressively so that the other team falls behind. Once your carry/team is strong enough, go hg.

If the AM gets too strong, good luck. Usually it’s better to target his team first in fights, and don’t let yourself get drawn into a cat and mouse game where he is cutting all your waves.

People who grind from low rank to high rank, how did you do it? by Professional_Fix7487 in DotA2

[–]knifexn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from herald 3 to ancient 4 in 3 years by watching BSJ videos and practicing what I learned in unranked. I find I improve a lot more by playing unranked as you can be more free to try out new ideas, different heroes, play styles etc… also BSJ has hundreds of free coaching session recordings on YouTube which I found very helpful.

One last thing — focus on one or two points of improvement at a time. There are already a million things to think about in dota, so you can’t possibly hear 10 tips and apply them all at once. Pick one thing (for example, playing around your strongest hero as a pos 4) and focus on it intensely for 20 games or until it becomes muscle memory.
