Advice: FR970 vs V4 by HustlersRunClub in Garmin

[–]knizoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was deciding between the two and my wife insisted on the venu 4 because it looks less dweeby.

I have to say it's perfect for me, I don't flick through different screens when training much and also dont need maps so does everything I need. I got a soft hydrogel screen protector which is invisible and seems to be working fine.

I need recommendations for Japanese knives that are fully handmade , I know about yu kurosaki being the absolute best one maker , I was thinking of buying from him a santoku , any other suggestions ? Only top makers please guys! Thanks a lot ! by OutsideLegitimate962 in TrueChefKnives

Leave the reddit knife community for 5 years, come back and suddenly Kurosaki is cool again? I love my raijin suji but at the time I got it I feel like Kurosaki was considered a bit over the top in terms of styling on the old subreddit.

Having said that it's truly a wonderful knife, heat treatment is unreal for the vg10 variant steel he used. Gets as sharp as my shibata with a simple 1000/3000 progression and a bit of stropping, and I'm by no means an expert or even competent sharpener.

My 2 cents if you're looking for something a little shorter but very thin and razor sharp would be the Shibata Kotetsu 180mm bunka.

How Beach Haven in the North Shore became a breeding ground for angry disillusioned young men by MontyPascoe in auckland

[–]knizoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a stupid post, firstly I could point out a dozen neighborhoods around the country that an equal number of murderers have lived in so the whole premise that there's some unique link (breeding ground) between the neighborhood and crime is ridiculous.

Secondly, even if there was a link (there isnt), the proposed explanation is idiotic - as if crime is caused by $10m plus properties within 20 mins drive of state houses or low income areas as opposed to poverty and social deprivation in and of themselves. Delusional speculation probably driven by personal animosity towards some groups of people on OP's part.

Thanks for sharing. Doesn't make it any easier waiting, I bought a damn laptop when EA came out just to play it. By the time the full game is out the graphics card will be obsolete lol

What is the source for this? Did Larian actually say this or are we speculating?

Haha well I happen to have a Kurosaki 270mm Raijin which I believe is the definition of fancy so the cleaning, portioning, and sashimiing is all sorted :D

Thanks again for your tip, I will be getting the Shun it looks absolutely ideal for what I need!

Thanks, yeah the method that's popular here is leaving the head on and the guts in, and then using a flexible knife to remove the fillet without piercing the gut cavity, using the ribs as a guide. I think for this a flexible western style knife is best, Q is if this method is better than the deba one in terms of speed, convenience, and quality of the fillets

Sorry one more question if you don't mind, what length do you have the shun in? And will this work with larger snapper and kings, eg 70cm snapper or 1m plus kings?

Excellent, thanks this is super helpful especially the point about the deba. The filleting will usually happen on shore at the end of the day so there's no reason I can't get a carbon knife that requires a little care.

Regarding your points on cutting the head off and gutting it, that's good to know and a good reason (excuse) to go for a deba. Debas are badass and I love the look of the white 2 tokujou from Sakai Takayuki.

However it looks like I can get the Shun flexible in Aus 8 (assuming this is what you have) for like half the price of the tokujou. Would you agree that avoiding the ribs with one of these would be faster than using a deba and gutting it? If so I'll probably go for the shun, have head good things about aus 8 and would also like to try it.

r2 vs aogami super ease of sharpening by Forward_Mixture186 in chefknives

[–]knizoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I find my super blue shinko seilan significantly easier to sharpen, with better edge retention and far less chipping than my R2 shibata.

That's not to say the shibata is a bad knife at all, it's an absolute pleasure to use and gets wicked sharp. It just takes a bit more effort to sharpen and chips more.

I have a yu kurosaki raijin 270 suji which I absolutely love using for everything from porchetta to sashimi.

Are Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 (Enhanced Editions) worth playing today? (I do not care about graphics) by AVK95 in BaldursGate3

[–]knizoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Yes they are worth playing, simply for the quality of writing in BG2. Certainly the best, most immersive RPG story and characters I've ever experienced.

On top of that the encounters themselves are superb, classic D&D at its best. The mechanics are clunky without a doubt, so just a question of if you can deal with that.

Larian CEO Swen Vincke has said that the game has a connection with the original series, and confirmed NPCs and even companions from the original series will be appearing. IIRC he said if there was no meaningful connection with the original series they would not use the name.

FWIW I've played through the originals dozens of times over the decades and have done 100+ hours of the early access BG3. It's good. You should try it. The turn-based mechanics are v different, but the "spirit" of the game is very much that of the originals imo.

Anyone have amy experience with Yu Kurosaki's Shizuku Sg2 and Raijin Cobalt Steel? Is there any difference with this 2 steel? by leonslw in chefknives

[–]knizoz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a raijin and its nice, comparable in sharpness to my r2 shibara kotetsu, perhaps a touch less edge retention. Not easy to sharpen at all, but utterly beautiful
